Title:PAINTING TECHNIQUES, AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE ARTISTIC EXPRESSION OF ELDERLY PERSONS
Abstract:The purpose of this diploma thesis was to study the possibilities of expressing art through various painting and drawing techniques by persons in their third age. The thesis begins with a description of the third age and the life in a retirement home, where I am currently employed. We spend our childhood in our first home. After getting married, we move to our second home, and in our old age a retirement home might become our third home. The purpose of this diploma thesis was to investigate how practicing art influences the wellbeing of elderly people, their motoric ability and their self-image. We were particularly interested in defining the concept of creativity and the clues to recognise it, mainly in view of the fact that everyone possesses a certain level of creativity. In the theoretical part, we focused on persons in their third age, creativity, art therapy and painting techniques. In the practical part, we described the research methodology as well as examples of various art expressions. We conducted eight art therapy sessions with residents of the SeneCura Retirement Care Centre in Graz, Austria. In these sessions, we used various art techniques in order to encourage the creativity of the residents. The motifs, mostly from nature, were taken from the environment known to them. The created artworks have been analysed and put on display at the SeneCura Retirement Care Centre in Graz.
