Title:Monitoring of condition and program of measures for the decrease of incidence of mastitis in Slovenian dairy herds
Abstract:Somatic cell count (SCC) is an important indicator of udder health which affects also technological quality of milk. In the thesis, it was our aim to monitor the situation on the field of SCC in Slovenia and to analyse factors influencing it (breed, parity, lactation stage, year and season of calving, herd productivity and size, cow productivity). The analysis comprised AT4 milk control data for the period of 5.5 years for Slovenia (n3.2×106 controls). A subset of 10% randomly selected herds (n220.000 controls) was used for statistical evaluation of important factors. According to our results, cow productivity, parity and breed are the most influential factors affecting SCC. Higher milk yield (per day or per standard lactation) is related to lower SCC. Among breeds, the highest SCC was observed for Holstein breed, followed by Brown, Simmental and crosses of Simmental and dairy breeds. Significant increase in SCC was recorded with parity. Other studied factors (herd productivity, year and season of calving) showed smaller or negligible effect on SCC. Within the thesis, detailed review of control systems and measures for the decrease of incidence of mastitis was done for different EU and world countries. Based on literature review and obtained results recommendations were prepared for the decrease of mastitis incidence in Slovenian dairy herds.
