Title:Drug Addiction Terminology in the First Season of The Wire
Abstract:Subtitling is the preferred type of audiovisual translation in most European speech communities with less than 25 million speakers. In subtitles, colloquial or stylistically marked words are often replaced by words in standard language, thus elevating the register of the speaker. A plethora of speakers in The Wire use drug addiction slang, which includes elements of jargon and argot. The creators of the show used such language with the purpose of depicting a realistic portrait of life on the streets. In addition, the goal was to be true to the source and not make it accessible for the average viewer. The purpose of this diploma thesis was to determine if the translator managed to successfully transfer the drug addiction slang and terminology into the target language. Changing the register of the speaker can decisively influence the characterization of specific characters. The decoding process of drug addiction language was conducted with the aid of adequate literature and Urban Dictionary (an online dictionary of slang). It was determined that translation shifts occurred in the process of transferring the drug addiction terminology into the target language. This resulted in the elevation of the register and in part interfered with the presentation of the characters and the story.
