Abstract:Humor je fenomen, ki predstavlja pomemben del našega vsakdanjega življenja, čemur priča njegova prisotnost v mnogih sociokulturnih področjih, še posebej v filmski industriji, kjer pogosto predstavlja najpomembnejšo sestavino določenega. Predmet magistrskega dela je opis specifike prevajanja humorja in analiza podnapisov narejena na podlagi dveh filmov humoristične skupine Monty Python – The Life of Brian (Life of Brian) in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Monty Python in Sveti gral), z namenom, da se ugotovi, če je humor v izvirniku ustrezno prenesen ter ohranjen v slovenskih podnapisih in katere prevajalske strategije so bile pri tem uporabljene.

Title:THE SPECIFICS OF TRANSLATING HUMOR IN SUBTITLING IN THE FILMS OF THE BRITISH COMEDY GROUP MONTY PYTHON
Abstract:Humour is a phenomenon that presents an important part of our daily life. It is present in many socio-cultural fields, especially in the movie industry, where it is often the most important component of a certain film. It either is the driving force in comedies or used to relieve the dramatic tension in a film with a more serious nature. It is important that its effect in the source language is transferred in the target language during the translation process. The translation of audio-visual humour in the form of subtitles presents further challenges for the translator, due to specific norms and restrictions it brings with it. To fully comprehend humour in its whole complexity, the translators have to be aware of its mechanisms and consequences. Since humour often derives from cultural specific and other elements, it is important for every translator to know both – the language in which he / she translates to, as well as its culture. The master’s thesis deals with difficulties that arise in audio-visual translation of humour. It also focuses on the description of the specifics of translating humour and the analysis of subtitles. The analysis is based upon two films of the comedy group Monty Python – The Life of Brian and Monty Python and the Holy Grail – with the intention to ascertain if the source humour is adequately transferred and obtained in Slovenian subtitles, as well as the translation strategies being used in the process. The analysis has shown occurrences of shortening and altering of the source dialogue, because of certain translation problems that occurred when translating humour. In order to solve these problems, different translation strategies were used which at certain point in the target language changed the effect of the original.
