Abstract:S tematiziranjem nasilja nad nečloveškimi bitji je Cankar razširil polje izkoriščanja, moralno obsodil vsakršno izkoriščanje in zatiranje Drugega ter s tem do skrajnosti utemeljil svoja temeljna moralna prepričanja.

Title:THE CONCEPT OF NATURE AND ANIMAL IN CANKAR`S LITERATURE
Abstract:By thematizing violence against non-human beings, Ivan Cankar widened the scope of exploitation and condemned all forms of exploitations and repression of Others, thus firmly substantiating his moral beliefs. As his overall equity stance of a socialist tolerated no reductionisms, he associated the exploitation of animals and nature with the exploitation of humans. The analysed sketches (short stories) prove radicalization of Cankar's stance during his stay at Rožnik. In this thesis, an ecocritical approach to research is applied. Concepts of nature and animals which may be identified as moral subjects were examined, the symbolic constructs of nature and animals that abridge their subjectivity were critically evaluated, and the stereotypical representation and sexual depiction of nature and animals as female were discussed. Moreover, the mental paradigms of dualism, as well as concepts of anthropocentrism, anthropomorphism, eugenics, use of nature and animals as metaphors and symbols, domestication, idealizing nature, and animalistic ecofeminism are highlighted. In his sketches, Cankar exposed several repressive mechanisms which maintain and perpetuate subordinate status of animals, further enabling their exploitation. The research determined Cankar raised not only the issue of human relationship to animals, but also the conceptions of animality and humanity, therefore implying a radical transformation of the human-animal relationship is possible. His sketches encourage a reflective contemplation of the relationship between humans and animals, condemn exclusion of nature and animals from the spheres of ethics and politics, and demand acknowledgement of the inherent value of animals.
