Abstract:V diplomskem delu sem obravnaval prelomna leta razvoja sovjetskega stalinističnega sistema, ki je kasneje postal vzor mnogim drugim vzhodnoevropskim državam in tudi Jugoslaviji takoj po drugi svetovni vojni. S pomočjo virov in literature sem poskušal prikazati utrip razmišljanja takratnega časa. Zanimalo me je, koliko so Slovenci v Jugoslaviji in ZDA vedeli o Sovjetski zvezi.

Title:THE SOVIET UNION IN THE LIGHT OF SLOVENIAN AND AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS IN THE YEARS 1930-1945
Abstract:My BA thesis deals with the Stalinist Communist system in the Soviet Union, which later became a model for many Eastern European countries as well as for Yugoslavia itself in the first period after WWII. The thesis focuses on the opinions and observations about Soviet Union, made by the Slovenian and American newspapers of that period. I used also scholarly literature and memories/memoirs of the important personalities of the time. The thesis is focused on five key chapters that marked the history of the Soviet Union in the period between 1930 and 1945. In those chapters I describe Stalinism, collectivization and industrialization, purges, foreign policy and the Second World War. I tried to use different resources and literature to really show the pulse of thinking of that time. I also deal with the question how acquainted were the Slovenes in Yugoslavia and in the United States with the Soviet Union. There are a number of key themes in each section that I'm trying to explain. Topics about the ideology of Stalinism, Communism, Marxism, the operations of the secret police, the Communist Party apparatus, labor camps, the famine in Ukraine, the Comintern, purges in the army and the Party, the German-Soviet pact, Hitler, Stalin, Roosevelt, American aid during WWII, American Slovenes and their attitude towards the alliance with the Soviet Union, etc.
Keywords:Stalin, Soviet Union, Russia, Germany, USA, Bolsheviks, communism, party, Red army, secret police, GPU, NKVD, politburo, The Central Committee, Comintern, Collectivization, Industrialization, purges, Gulags, show trials, Peoples front, pact, Neutrality acts, Lend-lease act, convoys, Roosevelt, Harriman, newspaper.
