Title:DETECTING DECEIT WITH SCIENTIFIC CONTENT ANALYSIS
Abstract:The ability to detect deceit depends largely on the ability to adequately perceive, differentiate and classify (non)verbal behaviour. Since this ability is susceptible to subjective judgement, several techniques have been developed which ensure the maximum objectivity of asessing whether or not the statement is true. These techniques differ, and each of them comes with a set of advantages and weaknesses. As any overestimation of the reliability of a technique may cause irreparable damage, the aim of the master's thesisis to determine the professional background of one of the most common techniques, known as Scientific Content Analysis (SCAN). A survey of the SCAN technique has shown that the ability to detect deceit is affected by knowledge, experience and frequency of use. In principle, the ability to detect deceit does not rise above the level of coincidence. The likelihood of correct identification can be increased by means of correct use of the SCAN technique. Particular caution needs to be exercised in assessing the merit of the SCAN results since the technique has several disadvantages which include poor theoretical background and the lack of a well-defined list of criteria.
Keywords:Scientific Content Analysis, lying, deceit, deceit detection techniques
