Title:NURSING CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITY AND INFECTED WITH ESBL
Abstract:This thesis contains a presentation of hospital-acquired and healthcare-acquired infections occurring not only in hospitals and healthcare facilities, but also growing more common outside of these. The following factors are discussed: causes of hospital-acquired infections, medical care of infected patients with intellectual disabilities, routes of transmission, prevention (techniques and equipment for controlling nosocomial infections), isolation of an infected patient with intellectual disability, and the role of a medical nurse in preventing nosocomial infections. In January 2015 we have carried out a survey among healthcare staff that has contact with infected patients at care home in on of the Slovenia’s facilities for patients with mental health problems. Results of this research are presented and discussed in the empirical part of the thesis. The goal of this research was to establish to what extend the healthcare staff complies to directions and how it carries out the measures to prevent transmission of nosocomial infections, to gain insight into the feelings of the staff that comes into contact with patients, infected with multiresistant bacteria, and into the role of a medical nurse in preventing transmission of the extended spectrum beta lactamasses. We have come to a conclusion that the healthcare staff is well acquainted with preventive measures and techniques for controlling nosocomial infections and that they follow all the necessary procedures. They are also well informed about routes of transmission and therefore not worried about being exposed to infection themselves. Through their work with patients with intellectual disability they experience that medical care of these patients tends to be more demanding.
