Abstract:Police brutality has a long and rich history. However, also civilians have been increasingly more educated and aware of their rights and the ways how to complain. The theoretical part of this diploma thesis focuses on the concept of police brutality, some possible causes for such behaviour, and it also focuses on the system how such police brutality is organised in a democratic country and what legal aspects are provided to limit actions of police brutality to the extent possible. The practical part of the thesis enlightens the police brutality seen through the eyes of mass media, and it also depicts the state of police brutality in the neighbouring country Croatia. In making the comparison of police brutality in both countries, Croatia is found out to be subject to a more intensive police brutality. However, the so-called codes of police silence do exist in both countries which conceal some certain facts and information and these are hidden or inaccessible to persons in charge. At the same time, the power of equality and cooperation is reflected among work colleagues.
