Rok nad Sevnico. Roka. Roka.

Title:PILGRIMAGE TO THE CHURCH ST. ROK ABOVE SEVNICA
Abstract:The pilgrimage in Slovenia, which is mostly a catholic land, is a quite popular religious activity. There are thirteen succursal churches in the Sevnica parish, two of them are pilgrimages; Saint Maria Vnebovzeta on Gračka Gora and Saint Rok above the town Sevnica. It is interesting that the pilgrimage began generally at the church Saint Maria Vnebovzeta and continued at the church Saint Rok. During the pilgrimage the faithful were praying and singing to shorten their way . The celebration of Marias assumption has been on 15th August until today and the celebration of Saint Rok is the next day, on 16th August. Faithful attended celebrationes in past more conscientiously. That proves the information that the pilgrimages pilgrimaged to Saint Rok a day before the 15th August and spent the night in the church, so they showed their anxiety faith. Although there were no many photographies and religious paintings left which were pinned up by pilgrims on the backside of the main altar, the testimonies of villagers present us the outline of the pilgrimege in the past. The first move to build the church Saint Maria Vnebovzeta was made by villagers, because one of them saw there the image of God's Mother. According to informations in parochial Cronica the church was made in year 1632. A lot of people visited that church in the second half of 19th century, because a lot of pilgrims came from neighbouring Brestanica and other surrounding parishes. The pilgrimage church Saint Rok was made in a memory of the plague, which spread in years 1625, 1646 and 1652. Saint Rok is the patron of ill people and invalid people and because of that the church has been visited more often. There were also three inns near the church where the faithful met to drink a glass of wine. Some few photographes and postcards are exellent signs of celebrations and pilgrimages in those days, but today there is only a stunted version of them. Beside already mentioned Cronica, the pilgrimage is explained to us by some other writers; Mojca Terčelj: Občina Sevnica, Zoran Zelič: Župnija Sevnica. The villiage seniors are also an important source of informations. If the pilgrimes walked nearly 8 kilometres in the past, today they come there by cars entirely to the church Saint Rok. Unfortunately today we can count cars there, but in the past we could hardly count all the pilgrims who came to the church.
