Title:SIMULATION OF PRESSURE RELIEF IN CHEMICAL PROCESSES
Abstract:The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate different approaches to sizing pressure relief valves that are used for mitigating the overpressure risk within the processes. Various calculating methods are presented as well as the use of the computer program Aspen Hysys. The first part presents a numerical sizing of pressure relief valves and rupture disks of a benzene tank exposed to heat source, and the sizing of the relief devices for a pump and tank with nitrogen. In the second part, the program Aspen Hysys was used for dynamic simulation of pressure relief process, and valve sizing of a tank with benzene assuming vapor and liquid reliefs. The results of dynamic simulation were the time profiles of flow rate, pressure and temperature during a relief process. It was established that the maximum flow rate of the relieving substance increases with increasing orifice area, pressure and temperature. The dimensions of safety valves were obtained by using computer simulation, and compared to those obtained by the numerical methods. We found out that the diameter of the relief valve obtained by the computer program was very close to the calculated value of vapor relief. In the case of the liquid relief some deviations occurred, however, the values obtained were within the same order of magnitude.
