Title:DIFFERENCES IN SUBTITLING ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE MOVIE GUARDIAN OF THE FRONTIER
Abstract:Subtitling, whose origins date back to 1903, has nowadays become a very important tool for watching foreign language films. The advantage of subtitling is not only the understanding of the film content but a plethora of other advantages, such as learning foreign languages, promotion of reading, getting to know grammatically well-formed sentences, learning written words and last but not least, subtitles play an extremely important function for the deaf, enabling them to watch and understand films and shows. Subtitles are formed and created by experienced translators. These do not only need to fluently understand and speak the source and target language, they must also be well familiar with cultural specifics of the two languages. The biggest mistake that occurs is a literal translation, which does not consider linguistic characteristics of the individual language. When forming subtitles, translators help themselves with principles of subtitling. In the thesis, I tried to find out to what extent the translators consider the principles. In order to carry out the research I studied the English and German subtitles of the Slovenian film Guardian of the Frontier. The findings show that both German and English subtitlers help themselves with the principles of subtitling. A comparison of the two subtitle languages revealed that the English subtitlers were more accurate in their translations while German subtitlers left out many subtitles or shortened the content.
