Abstract:V diplomskem delu so primerjani prevodi ekscesnega sociolekta v filmih Morilci, tatovi in dve nabriti šibrovki ter Tu pa tam.

Title:SLANG AND SWEARWORDS IN ENGLISH AND SLOVENE SUBTITLING: THE EXAMPLES OF THE FILMS LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS, AND HERE AND THERE
Abstract:The purpose of the graduation thesis is to compare the subtitles of two films, one in English (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and one in Slovene (Tu pa tam). The focus of the analysis is on the translation of slang and swearwords in the subtitles of the two films. The film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was shot in English and has Slovene subtitles, while the film Tu pa tam was produced in Slovenia and subtitled into English for the international audience. These films were selected for the comparison based on the numerous common features. They were produced within a short period apart, they show similar events and characters, and they both belong to the same genre. The analytical part of the diploma thesis focuses on the lexical aspect of the language variety of excess sociolect with the emphasis on the use of swearwords. The analysis showed that certain swearwords (e.g. fuck you) have matching expressions in both films/subtitles. For example, the original swearword jebi se which appears in the film Here and There, was often translated as fuck you. This translation matched the original swearword in the film LSTSB (fuck you), which was then accordingly translated in the Slovene subtitles as jebi se . The analysis also showed certain differences in the approach to the translation of swearwords between the two films. While subtitling Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels the translator interpreted swearwords as linguistic elements which can be omitted, as lexemes of less importance to the story than the rest of the text. He/she therefore omitted many of the swearwords in the subtitles in order to include other (perhaps more important) information. Quite the opposite approach was taken by the translator who translated the film Here and There. The English subtitles of that film contain some vulgar expressions which do not have an equivalent in the source (Slovene) text and were therefore added to the target text. This could be because he/she tried to balance the expressiveness of the target text and thus compensate for all the elements that are could not be directly translated into English.
