Abstract:Poslednji boj znamenitega Pohorskega bataljona je eden izmed najbolj znanih, a kljub vsem stvarnim podatkom, ki so nam danes na razpolago, še vedno zavit v skrivnostno tančico.

Title:THE FATE OF THE POHORJE BATTALION IN ARTISTIC DEPICTIONS, PUBLIC MONUMENTS AND LEGENDS
Abstract:The final battle of the famous Pohorje Battalion is one of the most known battles, but is, despite all available material data, still wrapped in a mystery. Its name became a legend, and its warriors are a symbol of heroism. Decades have passed by since last the shotgun shot in the Pohorje forest, where on 8th of January, 1943, forty-nine heroes were killed. Their bloody bodies were lying on snowy ground, covered with spruce needles. The memory of the final battle that was battled by Pohorje fighters with a belief that they were sacrificing for freedom of Slovenian population, is still real. In the clearing, covered with spruce needles, where Pohorje Battalion was defeated, nowadays stands a bronze memorial on a stony pedestal with two bronze figures; bigger and smaller granite rectangular solids around the main memorial plague represent the old cities of earth houses and battle positions. Slavko Tihec created the bronze deformed figures which, with diagonal lines, introduce unfinished standstill. Architect Branko Kocmut created a perfect monument complex with a clever circular composition that is an imitation of the battlefield, which is a popular destination for people who come to honor the memory of brave Battalion fighters. The counterbalance to the monument are tall spruce trees that are the only authentic and silent witnesses of the battle. The meaning and greatness of the final battle of Pohorje Battalion are undisputable. Their patriotism in year 1943 represented the faith in better tomorrow. The erection of the Pohorje Battalion Monument in Osankarica at ''Trije žeblji'' in 1959 represents very notable moment in monumental sculpting that can’t be found in any other that short period of time in history. Therefore we decided to describe other public monuments and memorials dedicated to National Liberation Struggle in this area. Since the history of famous Partisan unit has been slowly sinking into oblivion, we also studied two artistic paintings that make the memory of Pohorje Battalion eternal. The historical material about Pohorje Batallion is complete enough for versatile evaluation of the meaning of this legendary Partisan Battalion in National Liberation Struggle in the Styria region. The great struggle of Slovenes for liberation has become, with the help from the monument complex in Osankarica, an example of immense devotion for our posterity.
