Abstract:Diplomsko delo skupaj tvorita teoretični in empirični del. Naš vzorec so bili dijaki prvih in četrtih letnikov izobraževalnega programa gimnazija, farmacevtski tehnik in kemijski tehnik.

Title:SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS SLOVENIAN LANGUAGE
Abstract:This graduation thesis consists of theoretical and empirical part. In the theoretical part, we discuss the meaning of Slovenian language and write about the historical facts, which show the origins and the development of the Slovenian language. The graduation thesis is based on studying students' attitude towards mother tongue and their interest in native language; at the same time, there is an emphasis on the role of Slovenian language in terms of national identity. What more, we find out whether Slovene is a popular school subject among secondary school students. In our survey, we dealt with the problem of other cultures’ influence; therefore we questioned ourselves what kind of views on Slovenian language in comparison to foreign languages students have. The empirical part includes graphical and tabular representations of the results, obtained with the help of a questionnaire, which revealed that secondary school students are aware of the significance of mother tongue. Our sample consisted of first-year and fourth-year students of several educational programs: grammar school, pharmacy technician and chemistry technician. The survey has revealed secondary school students' opinion on how they perceive Slovenian language, how much they know about and respect its history and appreciate it as a language. Moreover, the results have stressed language awareness and preservation of national consciousness (even nowadays); namely, Slovene is important to students (even though it is not the most popular school subject) because the majority of students see Slovene as special and significant for Slovenian nation since it has been kept alive throughout so many centuries. Most of the students perceive Slovene as difficult to learn; however, students like being familiar with their mother tongue, complexity of the language and its culture. Therefore, we can conclude that secondary school students show positive attitude towards Slovenian language.
