Title:INNOVATIONS IN TOURISM: THE TOURIST AGENCY FOR DISABLED PEOPLE
Abstract:Social tourism or tourism for people with special needs is a major gain for the tourist market since it is an invention on an already busy market. Above all, it is a significant gain for persons with disabilities. However, when it comes to innovations, there is a lot of work to be done. Sadly, the first thing to do is to change the way of thinking of some of the leaders and the perspective on this issue on the tourist market. However, despite the variety of offers we hardly find offers for people with special needs. The term social tourism is very well established abroad. It stands for a vulnerable group of people, more exactly persons with disabilities, young families with children, active retired people and teenagers. Persons with disabilities should be highlighted here as they require significant adjustments. Due to their specific problems, they have just recently faced discrimination and lived as outcasts. Nevertheless, they are very sociable people, who wish and deserve a carefree holiday. There are 130 million potential clients on the tourist market in Europe and 70% of these are people with special needs who are capable to travel despite the problems they face. Currently about 260 million people with special needs all around the world generate 166 trillion Euros in tourism. According to these data we can conclude that people with special needs want to travel and that the need for accessible tourism is rising. Some European countries and some countries outside Europe have already realised this, but the situation in Slovenia is still poor. Even though the Equalisation of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities Act was passed, these people still have to fight for what they are entitled to. Furthermore, this is also true in tourism. Most of the tourism workers are not familiar with the needs of the disabled and their special way of life. Most tourist facilities provide accommodation adapted to the needs of disabled persons, especially for movement-impaired persons, but they do not promote it very well or do not provide enough information about it. Moreover, tourists with special needs are often automatically placed in the treatment facilities of spas, which can be very disturbing for the client who wishes to be treated as every other guest on holiday. Another problem in Slovenia is winter tourism. Despite the excellent offer, there are no offers for persons with disabilities. It is more than obvious that there is a great need for tourist agencies for people with special needs, notwithstanding the fact that the people on leading positions are not aware of it. This kind of agency creates a market niche, since it is an invention to be developed into innovation and this opportunity should be used. The tourist agency Premiki within the Slovenian Association for Mental Health deals with this kind of and similar problems.
