| Opis: | This thesis gives an insight into the life, work and significance of the polymath Avgust Pavel in the Slovenian, Hungarian and Austrian territory.
Avgust Pavel was born on the 28th of August, 1886 in Cankova, a village located in the Mura region. After graduating from gymnasium in Szentgotthárd, Hungary, he enrolled to college, also in Hungary, to study Latin and Hungarian language. On the initiative of the Slavic language expert Oszkar Asbóth, he additionally started to study Slavic languages. He lived and worked in Szombathely from 1920 until his death in 1946. He represented a link between the three nations, striving for harmony and concord at the junction of the three countries.
The first part of the thesis is an overview of Avgust Pavel’s life, of his poetry and his translations, of his work as a librarian and as a museum director. In the second part, this is followed by a detailed presentation of his work in the field of linguistics. The thesis cites and considers Judit Pavel’s memories of her father, Avgust Pavel. It also takes account of statements about him, made by the bishop of Maribor, Jožef Smej, who was a former Pavel student. Avgust Pavel was a linguist, a professor, a librarian, a museum director, an ethnographer, a poet and a translator. Pavel’s importance and power to unify three nations in the area of the border between Hungary and Slovenia, or rather in the tri-border region of Slovenia, Hungary and Austria, is proven by the numerous societies and institutions bearing his name.
The thesis portrays his versatility, with an emphasis on Slavic language studies and on his correspondence with the linguist Oszkár Asbóth. Letters are included – Slovene translations from the original Hungarian letters – from this correspondence, which help us to get an insight into Pavel´s and Asbóth´s view on the language of the autochthon Slovene population. |
