Abstract:Opismenjevanje je proces, skozi katerega gre vsak človek.

Title:LITERACY OF CHILDREN IN PRE-SCHOOL PERIOD
Abstract:Elimination of illiteracy is a process which takes part in every man’s life. It begins in the pre-school period already, but the official stage of literacy begins as a child starts visiting school. Parents are without doubt the child’s first stimulators in the process of eliminating illiteracy. The child sees them at reading and writing, which also stimulates the desire in him. In the period the child learns the pen is leaving a trace, this stimulates him to use different writing instruments and surfaces. Adults have to satisfy child’s desire for writing, talk to him about it and guide him through this process. Teachers in nursery schools introduce letters to children through different games, they teach them names of individual letters and how to spell, whereby child learns that every letter has its sound and, in relation to that, that it has a graphic form as well. In the theoretical part of my diploma work I presented elimination of illiteracy, where I have focused on the influence of family in the process of eliminating illiteracy and then described all four communication activities (speaking, listening, writing and reading) in detail. I have dedicated a special chapter to factors of early elimination of illiteracy and stages of reading development. In the empirical part I introduced and interpreted the results of testing I have performed at two nursery schools in Maribor during a four-month period. Using the descriptive and causal non-experimental methods, I have by literacy testing researched to what extent children have developed their level of literacy before starting visiting school and what is the progress in four months. I have performed both tests using the same instrumentation in the four-month period, because this is the only way we can speak of the real progress of children.
