Title:Pain as fifth vital sign
Abstract:Pain is a regular companion in our lives, so in our thesis we talk about pain as the fifth vital sign and about pain measuring scales. We wanted to determine what it means to assess pain as the fifth vital sign and how such an evaluation is important for the patient. We described the pain, the physiology of pain, possible treatments for pain. We presented an importance of the nurse's role. The nursing documentation has an important place. It ensures continuity of nursing and is a condition for evaluating the quality and appropriate patient care, so we have also included this part. With anonymous questionnaires which included 42 medical professionals, we wanted to determine whether the surgical department assess and documents pain properly and if they treat pain as a fifth vital sign. We wanted to know if they are using pain measurement scales for assessing pain and which pain scales and questionnaires are widely used. Based on the analysis of questionnaires, we found that medical professionals assess pain, but it's more a case of measuring pain when the patient mentioned that he or she is in pain and not in terms of evaluating the pain as the fifth vital sign. The most common way to measure pain at the surgical department is with numerical scale. The research showed that medical professionals do not document pain in an appropriate way, because the patients’ pain is reported only in change of shift and they do not document it in the nursing documentation. For better, effective treatment and relief, the pain should be treated as a fifth vital sign. We should not ignore the pain as something that the patient simply has to accept and live with it.
