Abstract:Teoretično izhodišče: Zdravstvena nega dementnega starostnika obravnava njegove individualne potrebe na telesnem, duševnem in socialnem področju.

Title:Importance of eating and drinking of eldery with dementia
Abstract:Theoretical starting point: The medical care of a patient with dementia deals with his individual needs on the physical, mental and social field. Therefore, we look for those problems in the process of medical care that a patient can not solve by himself, and for those that present obstacles in his independent life. Methodology and methods of work: The research has been based on the qualitative methodology with the use of the method of observing and measuring of time of a patient with dementia in the beginning stage of dementia during feeding and drinking of liquids. After the finished observation and measurement during feeding of a patient with dementia in two meals, three day running, a middle value of time has been counted up that is supposed to be needed for feeding a meal. Results: It has been established that feeding and drinking of liquids by a patient with dementia take a longer time than by an old age man that does not have dementia. It took 18 minutes for breakfast after the calculation of the middle value, and 21 minutes for lunch. Conclusion: A patient with dementia should be stimulated to different activities that preserve his independence. He should be directed or we try to understand his straits and troubles. Each life activity is very important and necessary for one man’s functioning. A nurse has to know a patient with dementia very well and she has to estimate his abilities of psychophysical activities, especially how is he capable of doing his physiological needs. With the medical education, advice and learning of an old age person and with the help of relatives we would like to achieve that a patient with dementia remains independent while doing his everyday basic life activities. Time and tolerance are needed for feeding of a patient with dementia. A lot of knowledge and a good organisation of work are required, and furthermore the professional mutual cooperation of all members of the attendant team and the cooperation with relatives as well as with each individual old age person are needed.
