Abstract:Vse pogosteje smo priča različnim katastrofam po svetu, ki privedejo do izrednih razmer.

Title:Emergency conditions and elderly people
Abstract:Ever more often, various catastrophes across the globe that lead to extraordinary circumstances occur. Slovenia is like some sort of an oasis that has not yet been affected by particularly severe circumstances of great dimensions. However, we must not forget that some places in Slovenia have already been damaged by the strength of nature (flood in Železniki, landslide in Log pod Mangartom). In chaos and panic, which are the consequence of a catastrophe, and due to the need for survival, we often forget to help people who cannot help themselves. One group of such people are the elderly. In this diploma thesis we examined their readiness on different extraordinary circumstances and ability of self-support. Various illnesses appear with age that often cause a lack of strength, will and necessary knowledge for survival. We did a research in the association of pensioners in Občina Sv. Jurij v Slovenskih goricah. We used anonymous polls to find out preparedness and experience of the elderly in case of extraordinary circumstances. We discovered that elderly people expect good awareness in case of extraordinary circumstances, that many would not leave their homes, and that most of them would try to take care of themselves and their nearest without expecting help from someone else. We also found out that the majority has not yet been exposed to serious extraordinary circumstances. The majority felt that war is the most severe type of extraordinary circumstances. Some of the interviewees actually experienced the Second World War. We think that in case of larger catastrophes there should be special groups of people arranged, specifically to help the elderly, and that the families of the elderly should ensure their safety.
Keywords:extraordinary circumstances, natural disasters, elderly people, awareness, rescuing.
