Title:INTERNATIONAL USE OF THE KETOGENIC DIET IN THE TREATMENT OF EPILEPSY
Abstract:In diploma we present use of ketogenic diet in the treatment of epilepsy and in certain metabolic disorders. We present the use of ketogenic diet around the world and recommendations of the international study group. The purpose of this research was to establish whether the number of children treated with the ketogenic diet worldwide increased from 2004 to 2010 and whether Slovenia has participated in the study of the international use. Methods. The research was based on a quantitative methodology with a structured questionnaire. We sent questions worldwide to the centers which use ketogenic diet therapeutically. We wanted to know how many children were treated with ketogenic diet and from which year they are using it. Results. We got responses from experts in 49 centers worldwide. Research revealed that most children treated with ketogenic diet are in the centers inside the United States of America. Reply centers in our study also indicate a large number of centers that deal with ketogenic diet in the world compared to 2004. We found out that Slovenia is mentioned in the list of centers in year 2004 and in the list of Charlie Foundation. In Slovenia ketogenic diet is used in the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, but we did not get answers from the experts. Conclussion. Antiepileptic drugs are still the primary treatment with patients suffering from epilepsy. Ketogenic diet represents a different way of treating epilepsy and they may have high hopes for the quality of life people with epilepsy.
