Abstract:Podnaslavljanje predstavlja pomembno področje prevajanja.

Title:The Problem of Translating Culture-specific Elements in the English Movie One, Two, Three
Abstract:The translation of audiovisual texts represents an important field of translation. The movie One, Two, Three is a fast-paced comedy about an American businessman in West Berlin after the Cold War. Humor plays an important part in the movie; it is based on cultural differences, and language is a tool for achieving various humorous effects. The translator of the movie is faced with several subtitling, linguistic and cultural restrictions. An important problem is the difference between spoken language and reading speed; there is the physical limitation of space, the duration of the subtitles and much more. In the analysis, a differentiation between translating plain text and translating film dialogue is made, subtitling strategies are discussed and various constraints within which a subtitler must perform are explained. The main body of discussion involves the analysis of translation problems from the movie One, Two, Three, which are divided into four main categories: culture-specific elements (intralinguistic and extralinguistic), figures of speech (metaphor, wordplay, zeugma, alliteration and allusion), song lyrics and multiple languages in the original script and the question of translation. Special focus is given to the translation of various figures of speech and to evaluating how the ensuing linguistic challenges were dealt with in Slovene translation and, consequently, to what extent the humorous effects of the original movie were preserved.
Keywords:subtitling, culture, figurative language
