Title:Life of Disabled People with Muscular Dystrophy in Institutional Care
Abstract:Muscular dystrophy is diseases with typical collapse of muscle fibres that cause complete or partial muscle weakness and severe impairment. Disabled person is partial or completely dependent from others. Majority of types of muscular dystrophy appears in early childhood, but It can also appear later. There is no cure for muscular dystrophy, it is only symptomatic treatment possible. In the research we wanted to find out the procedures for discovering muscular dystrophy, types of muscular dystrophy and kinds of treatment . Whose persons help patients need the most from, what kind of help is needed based on basic life activities, role of nurse at health treatment, life of a patient with a muscle dystrophy within institutional care and importance of creating centres for patients with muscular dystrophy were things we were interested in. There were nineteen disabled persons with muscular dystrophy, who live in institutional care in Slovenia included in the research. With the research we gained suitable information to answer research tasks. Results show that 15 (79 %) interviewees think that the nursing home is the right living choice for patients with muscular dystrophy. The nurse help is needed for basic activities, such are washing, undressing, dressing, feeding, installing of orthopaedic accessories, performing transfer on wheelchair and nursing care. Help is not needed in free time and recreation for relaxation in such amount. Difficult mobility and consequently loneliness are the reasons that individuals need psychic help like conversation for positive self-image.
