Abstract:Pričujoče diplomsko delo se osredotoči na poseben element angleškega jezika, in sicer nedovršno obliko glagolskega vida. Narejena je primerjava pogostosti rabe nedovršne oblike v pogovorni ameriški angleščini in pogovorni britanski angleščini. V empiričnem delu je poiskana in primerjana uporaba nedovršne glagolske oblike v dveh komedijah — Prijatelji (ameriška angleščina) in Parčkanje (britanska angleščina).

Title:THE USE OF THE PROGRESSIVE ASPECT IN AMERICAN ENGLISH VERSUS BRITISH ENGLISH
Abstract:This diploma paper concentrates on one particular aspect of English, namely progressive aspect. The comparison of frequency of progressive aspect in American English versus British English conversation is made, and the tense most commonly used in the progressive aspect indicated. Also, dynamic and stative verbs are addressed. The empirical part looks for and compares the use of the progressive aspect in two comedies – Friends (American English) and Coupling (British English). A list of all the progressive verbs in these comedies is made and also analysed. It can be concluded that progressive verbs are without a doubt an important and frequently used element of spoken English language. The progressive aspect is more frequently used in American English than in British English. Progressive aspect was already common centuries ago and its popularity continues to grow. New combinations of progressive verbs arise every day; they evolve and change in the same way as language in general.
Keywords:Progressive aspect, indefinite aspect, dynamic verbs, stative verbs, American English, British English, Friends, Coupling
