Abstract:Sladkorna bolezen je ena izmed najbolj razširjenih kroničnih bolezni. Ob sprejetju bolezni so bolnikom v veliko pomoč podpora družine, vedno dosegljiva pomoč zdravstvenih delavcev, njihova zdravstvena vzgoja in izobraževanje. Ostalih 30 % največkrat potrebuje pomoč zaradi slabovidnosti in pozabljivosti. Ugotovljeno je bilo, da so izpostavljene starostne spremembe, zaradi katerih potrebujejo spremljevalce in vodje. To so običajno njihovi svojci, ki so skupaj z bolnikom vključeni v zdravstveno vzgojni program.

Title:ABILITY TO TOLERATE DIABETES OF AN ELDERLY PERSON IN HOME ENVIRONMENT
Abstract:Diabetes is one of the most widespread chronic diseases. It is not only one disease as the name indicates, but is a group of metabolic disorders which have one common characteristic and that is increased level of blood sugar. Vital functions of the elderly decline which is a great psychical burden. Burden becomes even bigger if elderly suffers from newly discovered chronic disease. Accepting the disease, adapting to it and capability of its control present enormous psychical and social problems to the patient. However, with timely and adequate steps it is possible to suppress these problems. The support of family, help from the health service and their medical education are of key importance when patient is confronting with his disease. With this research we aimed to describe diabetes emerging in the old age and to determine capabilities of understanding and accepting the disease in home environment. 25 elderly persons, who have diabetes and receive their treatment at the general practice dispansery, participated in this research. Questionnaire provided us with answers to previously composed research questions. It has been established that 70 % of elderly persons, who participated in this research, are independent in treatment and monitoring the disease. This leads us to the conclusion that despite their age they understood health educational programme properly and learned to understood this disease and its treatment. Other 30 % need help mostly because they are weak-sighted and forgetfull. It has been established that some old-age changes are the main reason why elderly need companion and guidance. Usually their relatives offer them companion and guidance and are included in the health educational programme as well as the patient.
