Title:Do women really write differently from men?
Abstract:This paper explores differences between male and female writting according to the automated text categorization based on a large subset of the British National Corpus. Several classes of simple lexical and syntactic features that differ according to author gender are identified by studying a sample of 30 % informal non-fiction documents (such as correspondence). Our results are consistent with earlier findings that women talk more about relationships than men. Female writing exhibits greater usage of personal pronouns, proper nouns and personal deictics that encode tendency to personalization and the relationship between the writer and the reader. Common nouns, adjectives and quantifiers (cardinal numbers, quantitative adverbs) that encode information about the »things« of the world are used with greater frequency in male-authored documents. Male and female writing characteristics accord with concept of »agency« (maskulinity: isolation, alienation, self-protection) and »communion« (femininity: tendency to solidify relationships, concern for others).
Keywords:personal letter, automated text categorization, female markers, male markers, stereotypes about speech, social construction of gender, social constructionism, social identity theory, accommodation theories, masculinity, femininity, frequency means, text dynamics, hierarchy of dominant-subordinate themes, text pragmatics
