Mojca Kompara Lukančič, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: In the following chapter we outline the preparation of a method guide for the inclusion of travel writing into communication skills curricula. In the introduction we present an overview of travel writing where we also discuss the basic concepts of communication skills. Furter, we expand the theory of readings and examples of good practice in relation to topics of travel writing and link it to the concept of green curricula for a sustainable future. The paper further presents an analysis of communication skills curricula in travel writing from several higher education institutions. The analysis functions as an example of good practice in the preparation of a common methodology for the inclusion of travel writing into communication skills curricula and the preparation of tasks for undergraduate and master level of education; these are also presented in the chapter.

Travel writing as an instrument of cultural heritage promotion
Jasna Potočnik Topler, Charlie Mansfield, Hugues Séraphin, Philipp Wassler, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study contributes to the research literature through its approach to equipping tourism content creatives who are entering the professions of destination image communication with platform expertise alongside cooperation and co-creation leadership. Productive skills for travel writers and social media content producers in tourism are significant in the co-creation of sustainable tourist experiences since they are interactive and participative. The two purposes of this study are to implement and improve the dialogue journaling process as a re-usable methodology. The new 3-step processual research methodology is explained through a case study with stakeholders and project leaders in Brežice, Slovenia. The paper contributes to pragmatic tourism management concerns and practice by reporting findings from a real-world process project on cultural heritage that provides a re-usable solution.

Inclusion of travel writing, movement and sign languages into university curricula : case study of Slovenia
Vita Petek, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: As part of Erasmus+ project: “Active and inclusive teaching of literacy and communication skills for enhanced employment and sustainable economic growth (IN-COMM GUIDE)”, university curricula of Slovenian study programs were analyzed. For purpose of this paper, curricula at Slovenian public and private universities were analyzed. The research focused on the question of which innovative methods were used for teaching communication skills, and whether travel writing, movement, and sign languages are included. Analysis showed that there were no innovative methods included in the curricula. It was shown that among all the curricula, there is none that has as its subject travel writing. In three curricula in total, the subject of sign language was found and six analyzed curricula were related to movement. Being active was found in curricula of Faculties of Education. We can conclude that curricula on communication skills at Slovenian universities still have room for further development, innovation and improvement. This chapter of the monograph also includes interviews that were conducted with representatives from the Association of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Associations of Slovenia and Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Podravje, Maribor.

Communicating tourism destinations through travel writing : a case study on travel content research in tourism co-creation
Charlie Mansfield, Zoë Roberts, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This research explores the intersection of travel writing pedagogy and professional practice through the creation and analysis of a travel writing portfolio. One of the researchers compiled a portfolio of nine travel texts to test the efficacy of the aim, design, assessment (ADA) apparatus – a tool designed for planning and evaluating travel writing. The study utilised close reading techniques, drawing on established literary and semiotic theories, to analyse the portfolio and assess the role of pedagogic knowledge in professionalizing travel writing. The research highlights the importance of structured, reflective practices in producing travel texts that are both engaging and informative. Additionally, the study advances travel writing methodology by incorporating journaling into a Web 2.0 archive, offering new insights into the dialogic process between researchers and stakeholders. While the study’s limitations include a lack of comparative data, it lays the groundwork for further exploration of travel writing’s pedagogic and professional dimensions. The findings underscore the value of integrating pedagogic theory with practical application, providing a framework for future research and professionalisation of the genre.

Teaching writing skills in English for tourism by employing travel writing
Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2021, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: This chapter examines teaching writing skills in English for Tourism by employing travel writing, which is not only a tool for teaching linguistic skills, but also encourages students to develop research interests and storytelling techniques. When travel writing was introduced to undergraduate and MA students during the English lessons the role of languages in Tourism, Tourism Discourse and Literary Tourism was also discussed with them. As part of the English assignment, students were asked to produce their own travel writing texts, which were discussed, reviewed by their teacher, re-written and – in the case of Master students – at the final stage, also published as an example of a teaching and learning experiment. Thus, this chapter presents travel writing as a successful method of developing travel writing skills inside the English for Specific Purposes classes.

Building the ethnopôle : eliciting and sharing ethnobotanical knowledge in tourism development
Charlie Mansfield, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: With rising tourism interest in cultural heritage, destination management organisations, museums and other cultural institutions are seeking methods of unlocking the intangible cultural heritage of local residents and sharing that before it is lost. This is specific knowledge of the uses and practices of disappearing urban space, of plants and foodstuffs, of clothing and of work practices that were more in-tune with local, sustainable production. With the emergence of post-humanism, based on Deleuze's reading of Spinoza's ethics, this contribution outlines new methodologies in building the ethnopôle, and proposes a model for transmission that explores narrative knowing through literary travel writing for a new public.

The contribution of first teachers of French at Petrović’s court to the transformation of society and the affirmation of Montenegro in Europe
Ivona Jovanović, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper explores the role and contribution of the first foreign teachers of French in Montenegro, to their students/rulers – last three sovereigns of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, to Montenegrin society as a whole and to the affirmation of Montenegro in Europe. The paper chronologically relates to the period of rule of Petar II Petrović- Njegoš, Danilo I and Nikola I, to whom the aforementioned Romance language instructors did not transfer merely a knowledge of language, but also much other substance formed from different views and perspectives on the world, thus contributing to the emancipation of Montenegrin society. Through their efforts to modernise Montenegro and strengthen its sovereignty, as well as their publications and political engagement during events critical to Montenegrin history, they contributed to its reputation and popularisation throughout Europe. The research is based on facts found by studying archive and library materials, and on analysis of periodical publications, travel writings, and documents of a memoir/autobiographical character, which significantly contributes to the originality of the article, where the conclusions of the new analysis are presented and represent a significant contribution to the findings published so far

Literary walking tours as a form of well-being : Slovene writers' trail and the Prežihov Voranc route
Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2022, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: The concept of literary tourism is becoming increasingly interesting, not only for researchers and students, but also for tourism practitioners and destination managers, who are interested in the supply of and demand for this sub-type of cultural tourism. In recent decades, it has become an important niche in tourism. Especially in rural areas it is perceived as useful in supporting the existent tourism activities and helping to develop new ones. Not only is it prose, drama and poetry that inspire people to become literary tourists, but also biographies and autobiographies, screen adaptations of literary works, theatre performances, etc. Literary walking tours have emerged as a wellreceived type of literary tourism product, which have been associated to well-being. Some of them are also included in the most popular tour guides, such as, for example, The Lonely Planet.

Encompassing a consortium of institutions including the University of Maribor, University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, University of Pula, and University of Udine, the project aimed to develop communication skills curricula. This focus sought to bolster students' readiness for the job market while emphasizing non-verbal communication, sign languages, and linguistic proficiency, particularly in English. Within the monograph, the emphasis on innovative teaching methodologies, intercultural communication, and students' well-being converge. Moreover, attention is directed toward individuals with hearing impairments and the significance of non-verbal communication.

Handbook for Writing and Editing Texts at the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor
Maja Turnšek, 2021

Opis: The learning process at the faculty requires not only attending lectures and active participation in the tutorials, but also intensive individual work of a student, which is often presented in the form of a seminar paper. However, the most important individual work of a student is definitely a final paper - a diploma or a master's thesis. In order to present and facilitate the preparation of written works for the students of the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor, we have prepared this handbook for writing and editing texts at the faculty. The professional monograph covers the chapters that lead the student through the whole process of research and writing their paper. From the initial search of the research idea and the basics of scientific writing and research in tourism, to the individual steps of the research process and research methods. The professional monograph also includes a chapter on personal relationships, which in particular addresses the relationship between a student and a mentor in the process of preparing the paper or thesis. The handbook also provides practical advice on language and text designing, as well as instructions for citing references. The professional monograph, thus, combines basic information that both students of tourism and their lecturers will use in their study and work processes, as they will follow the uniform guidelines for writing texts in tourism at the Faculty of Tourism.
