Prevajalski problemi pri prevajanju poljudnoznanstvenih besedil iz slovenščine v angleščino – kontrastivna analiza turističnih besedil s področja

Abstract: The aim of this thesis was to provide the insight into translation difficulties that occur when translating popular science texts from Slovene into English with special reference to popular science texts as tourist texts from the area of speleology and to investigate what kind of translators are usually commissioned for such translations. The texts selected for analysis concentrated on the descriptions of karst caves. The empirical part of the thesis was based on contrastive analysis of selected texts, whereby special attention was given to terminology from the area of speleology, sentence structure, translating geographical names and orthographic mistakes. The results of the contrastive analysis have revealed that some inefficiencies can be shown in the majority of the analysed popular science and tourist texts from the area of speleology and only a small number of them have been translated by a qualified translator. It has also been proven that texts translated by a qualified translator contain less translation mistakes and are of better quality. The results are discussed in detail in the conclusion of the diploma paper.

Abstract: The study of translation is very young and has no unified theory. There is no uniform definition of an ideal translation. Aspects affecting translation are too numerous to consider them all. Up to the present many sciences have influenced its development and theory to a great extent, they changed, added to it and improved it. Text linguistics contributed to translation too, refuted the concept of a sentence-for-sentence or even word-for-word translation and focused on treating a text as a whole. This young discipline changed the perspective of text analysing, it moved from focusing on text producing, style or text type to its structure, it analyses genres, the elements texts are constructed of and the ties linking them into logical, whole units. Another approach to text analysing developed within the framework of systemic functional linguistics referred to as discourse analysis that investigates textuality according to linguistic resources such as reference, repetition conjunction etc. creating cohesive ties between linguistic items (Martin, 1992:3; Halliday and Hasan, 1995:2-4). In this graduation thesis reference to human participants was researched in theory and practice using the example of a text in English and its Slovene translation and the results show that the knowledge of differences or resemblances in achieving cohesion in English and Slovene can contribute to better translating between those two languages and makes it easier for the reader or receiver of the translation to understand it in one’s mother language.

Advanced features of Digital library of University of Maribor

Abstract: Advanced features of digital library of University of Maribor are described inthis paper. A short introduction describes some basic facts about the digital library and mentions its main purpose, but the main part of this paperis about features, that are mostly not found in other digital libraries. These features include integration with other information systems, plagiarism detection, informative and useful statistics about mentors and specific content extraction from documents, served by the digital library. We present existing functionality and describe some ideas for future development. A natural language processing framework, called TextProc, is also briefly mentioned, since it is used to perform plagiarism detection.

TextProc - a natural language processing framework and its use as plagiarism detection system

Abstract: A natural language processing framework called TextProc is described in this paper. First the frameworks software architecture is described. The architecture is made of several parts and all of them are described in detail. Natural language processing capabilities are implemented as software plug-ins. Plug-ins can be put together into processes that perform a practical natural processing function. Several practical TextProc processes are briefly described, like part-of-speech tagging, named entity tagging and others. One of those is capable to perform plagiarism detection on texts in Slovenian language, which is explained in detail. This process is actually used in digital library of University of Maribor. The integration of digital library with TextProc is also briefly described. At the end of this paper some ideas for future development are given.

Abstract: Translating scientific texts is crucial for dissiminating scietific knowledge and consequently for the progress of specific scientific fields. This thesis focuses on the issue of translating mathematical texts. The first chapter presents basic characteristics of scientific texts which will serve as a basic model. In the second chapter those common basic characteristics of mathematical texts are presented which distinguish themselves from other texts at different levels of semiotic structure, as well as through symbolism and visual images. Specific aspects of individual systems and their intersemiotic relations are presented through multisemiotic mechanisms. In the third chapter the basic model for translating scientific texts is given, as well as a description of some of the traslation techniques we can use when translating. The fourth and final chapter presents an analysis of the first and third chapters of the book 17 Lectures on Fermat Numbers and its translation into Slovene based on theoretical knowledge in the first three chapters. The techniques for translation of the selected mathematical text are analyzed through specific characterictics of scientific and mathematical texts.

Abstract: Der erster Teil der Diplomarbeit beschreibt verschiedene Begriffe, die sich auf das Thema Lesestrategien beziehen, so wie: Was sind Lesestrategien? Welche Lesestrategien kennt man? Einfluss der neuen Medien auf das Lesen usw. Der theoretische Teil beinhaltet auch einige Beispiele und Bilder für eine leichtere Vorstellung. Der empirische Teil besteht aus acht Fragen, die von fünf Rezipienten beantwortet wurden. Die Fragen, die sich auf das Verständnis von Lesestrategien und Lesen allgemein beziehen, wurden analysiert und mit Tabellen dargestellt. Das Ziel ist es, herauszufinden, wie die Texte aufgenommen und welche Lesestrategien dabei benutzt werden.

Translation Shifts in User's Guides: The Case of iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software

Abstract: The graduation thesis Translation Shifts in User's Guides: The Case of iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software presents translation shifts and their appearance in the Slovene translation of the user's guide. Translation shifts are common in all kinds of text. In this thesis I describe some of the most common translation shifts, present in the Slovene translation of the iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software. Technical texts are a challenge for every translator. He has to poses the knowledge of the technical field he is translating in. Whenever transferring the message form one language to another, there are obstacles, which the translator has to overcome. Each language has its grammatical, lexical and semantic characteristics, which are unique. Achieving equivalence and equivalent effect always and in every situation is nearly impossible. Therefore translation shift are unavoidable. C. J. Catford (1965), Kitty van Leuven-Zwart (1989) Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), Nida (1964) and Popovič (1970) dedicated their time to translation shifts. Based on the work and classification of Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) and Nida (1964) I have analysed the Slovene translation of the iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software. The analysis of the iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software shows that the predominant translation shift is transposition (change of word class). It occurs most frequently in connection with nominalization in the Slovene translation.
