The relationship between leadership in BPM and company profitability

Abstract: This paper studies the relationship between leadership as an activity of business process management (BPM) and company performance. Business process data about leadership and business processes in SMEs were collected via questionnaires on the population of 3007 SMEs in Slovenia. Aspects of leadership such as the involvement of employees, middle management, customers and suppliers were studied. The financial data of the SMEs of the sample were obtained from publicly available financial statements to assess relative residual income profitability ROEr and ROEa. Data analysis was performed using Bartlett’s, Kaiser–Maier–Olkin and nonparametric Mann–Whitney U tests. We confirmed a positive relationship between employee involvement in leadership as an activity of BPM and company profitability. It was proved that companies that involve employees and middle management in improving core business processes to a greater degree are more profitable. Intense involvement of employees in changes in core business processes results in higher company profitability, which has been detected by the higher risk-adjusted profitability measure ROEa. Companies that involve middle management to a greater degree by leading employees based on their interests are more profitable. The results are important for managers as decision-makers and other company stakeholders, especially those responsible for business process improvements. Theoretical and practical implications and further research possibilities are discussed.

An innovative approach to organizational changes for sustainable processes : a case study on waste minimization

Abstract: It is necessary to adapt constantly to the business environment with its changing demands. Understanding the objectives, scope, and limitations of actual process changes is crucial, and can be achieved with numerous measures, methods, and techniques. This research demonstrates an innovative approach to organizational changes to enable sustainable processes. In the first part of this research, relevant measures, methods, and techniques are selected through an in-depth literature review. Then, an international online questionnaire is executed among 213 enterprises from four countries. In the last part of this research, the developed approach is tested for the example of waste minimization in the process of developing coatings. Based on the analysis of the survey questionnaire, the usability and benefits of various measures are demonstrated, namely from the point of view of their positive impact on structural and operational efficiency indicators. At the end of the article, a case study presents the success of the innovative approach in terms of 88% waste minimization and up to 48% time and cost reductions in the process of developing coatings. The proposed approach enables better choices to be made and the more efficient use of various measures, which can lead to more sustainable processes and improve the efficiency of enterprises.

The impacts of adventure tourism in mountain regions – a review

Abstract: Recently, mountain regions have become highly attractive and important areas for tourism (Beedie & Hudson, 2003; WTO & UNEP, 2008; Rama et al., 2019). One of the most dynamic components of tourism in mountains is adventure tourism, which combines travel, sport and outdoor recreation (Beedie & Hudson, 2003). Since mountains represent sensitive areas in terms of sustainability, it is important to approach them appropriately, in order to apply measures to optimize the impacts of tourism. This study covers a review of the impacts of adventure tourism on mountain areas and an examination of measures that might optimize the impacts of such tourism. The purpose of this paper is to present the latest findings in the field of the impacts of adventure tourism in mountain areas, and certain measures that can be taken to balance the positive and negative impacts. The findings show that the impacts of adventure tourism in mountain destinations vary, and therefore each destination must be treated individually. Furthermore, a thorough approach to achieve balance is needed on a case by case basis, since there is no universal formula for sustainable development of destinations due to their different characteristics. The implications and further research opportunities are given.

Audio-visual effects of a collaborative robot on worker efficiency

Abstract: Collaborative workplaces are increasingly used in production systems. The possibility of direct collaboration between robots and humans brings many advantages, as it allows the simultaneous use of human and robotic strengths. However, collaboration between a collaborative robot and a human raises concerns about the safety of the interaction, the impact of the robot on human health, human efficiency, etc. Additionally, research is unexplored in the field of the collaborative robot’s audio-visual effects on the worker’s efficiency. Our study results contribute to the field of studying collaborative robots’ audio-visual effects on the worker’s behavior. In this research, we analyze the effect of the changing motion parameters of the collaborative robot (speed and acceleration) on the efficiency of the worker and, consequently, on the production process. Based on the experimental results, we were able to confirm the impact of robot speed and acceleration on the worker’s efficiency in terms of assembly time. We also concluded that the sound level and presence of a visual barrier between the worker and robot by themselves have no effect on the worker’s efficiency. The experimental part of the paper clearly identifies the impact of visualization on work efficiency. According to the results, the robot’s audio-visual effects play a key role in achieving high efficiency and, consequently, justifying the implementation of a collaborative workplace.

Analysis of legal powers of municipal wardens they possess to ensure safety at the local level

Abstract: Purpose: This article is primarily intended for students and other professionals at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security of the University of Maribor to familiarise themselves with the Slovenian regulation in the field of criminal justice and security. The article presents safety powers of municipal wardens from the perspective of the applicable Slovenian law. Readers may learn how the Slovenian legal system works at the local level, what general legal acts provide a basis for municipal wardens’ actions and what are legal rules for their application. Methods: The article is a scientific review based on grammatical and dogmatic interpretation of applicable legal regulations and selected decisions of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, and on an analytical method (de lege lata) of the review of the Slovenian legislation in the field in question. The legal methods used by the author also include a synthetic method of comparing the legislation from the underlying Municipal Warden Services Act (»Zakon o občinskem redarstvu« [ZORed], 2006) and its main amendments set out in the Act Amending the Municipal Warden Services Act (»Zakon o spremembah in dopolnitvah Zakona o občinskem redarstvu« [ZORed-A], 2017). Findings: The paper is a comprehensive review of measures that municipal wardens may use to ensure safety at the local level. The author lists the relevant scientific and professional literature and argues about polemic issues with other prominent Slovenian authors dealing with the field in question, i.e., legal powers of municipal wardens. He mainly refers to the works of authors, such as Meško, Žaberl, Dvojmoč, Lavtar, Kečanović, Gostič, Brezovnik, Grafenauer, and Flander. Limitations/Implications: Due to the limited length of the article the overview of the municipal wardens’ powers covers essential legal concepts. The author’s intention is to introduce to the Slovenian or foreign readers the complex notions from the Slovenian legal system, sometimes in a non-technical way since the readers will be both from the field of law and from the field of criminal justice and security. Practical Implications: The article has practical application for domestic and foreign experts wishing to gain knowledge of the Slovenian regulation relating to safety at the local level. Definitions are correct and up-to-date and contribute, therefore, to boosting the knowledge in this field. The article contains a further overview of terms to broaden the understanding of the legal categorical apparatus in local safety and security. Originality/Value: This is a review article and therefore its originality is limited since the author does not provide any new scientific information. Rather, he summarises, through a scientific legal analysis, what is already known. The original value of the article lies in the way the author puts the legal and repressive measures of municipal wardens in a readable and easy-to-understand context so that readers can remember them easily. The definitions of terms used in the article are useful and will be helpful to many readers in their future study or research.

The role and function of a sports event organiser : safety at football matches in Slovenia, Serbia, and Austria

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to examine the organisation of a sports event - more precisely, a football match, specifically from the point of view of safety. We compared the Slovenian practice of event organising with how sports events are organised in Serbia and Austria. Design/Methods/Approach: First we conducted a literature and normative bases review. The research was conducted through interviews with spokespersons from the football clubs - NK Celje, FK Partizan and SK Sturm Graz. We conducted a telephone interview with the security manager of the European Football Association and also included our own observations from attending the Serbian championship match. Findings: Our research shows that despite the existence of subnational legislation, there are differences in understanding of ensuring safety at sporting events in the analysed countries. As the most common factors that can affect safety and security at a sports event we identified the following: personnel, supporter groups, pyrotechnics and infrastructure. Research Limitations/Implications: Our research is limited to three countries and to three football clubs that were willing to take part in our research. Originality/Value: Research findings are based on the perspective and experience of football club security managers, presenting main risk factors and corresponding measures for ensuring safety and security at football matches.

Interim measures in arbitration proceedings : facing the challenge to amend teh Macedonian arbitration legislation

Abstract: Interim measures in arbitration proceedings are intended to provide protection of the parties’ rights in the course of the proceedings before the final award is rendered. This issue for a long time has been regarded to be rooted in public policy concerns, but gradually this power is being transferred to the arbitral tribunal itself. In the Republic of Macedonia, the issue of interim measures in international commercial arbitration is regulated in the Law on International Commercial Arbitration. The provisions of the law expressly provide for the power of the arbitral tribunal to grant interim measures, however many questions in regard of arbitral interim relief are left unsettled. The authors give an analysis of the currents state over this issue in the Republic of Macedonia, and make an attempt to provide a solid answer to the question – will the amended provisions of the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration be a good basis to overcome the perceived problems, or an approach similar to the Slovenian should be rather accepted.

Scope of application of EU law in the judicial procedures of debt collection in civil and commercial matters

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, that the interest of a more efficient, and proportionate access to civil justice in EU law requires some changes. Motivated changes are the abolishment of exequatur proceedings, the private creditor shall, as a service measure to him, be able to file an application for enforcement directly to the Member State of origin of the title of execution, instead of to the Member State of actual enforcement, decisions, on interim measures in ex parte proceedings shall be recognized, and access to information for enforcement purposes shall, after a title of execution, be improved in both the cross-border and national contexts.

New trends in rock mass characterisation for designing geotechnical structures

Abstract: The investigation on designing supporting measures for geotechnical structures consists of the proper selection of the input data for the stress – strain analysis of the excavation process and the selection of retaining measures. In the preliminary phase of investigation the area must be geologically mapped in detail, and discontinuities precisely measured, boreholes and their “in situ” tests listed and samples for laboratory examinations taken. The new method allows rock mass classification for different rock quality, from soft rocks to mixed rock masses, as well as determination of the geological strength index GSI. The limits for using the suggested method are persistent discontinuities in rock mass which lead to translation or rotation failure mechanisms, either in a single plane or as a wedge. In all cases where discontinuities play a significant role, the rock mass structure must be considered and kinematical analyses performed. In other circumstances, a rock may be uniform and reasonably isotropic due to the geometry of discontinuities and their mutual intersections. The value range of GSI is first determined in the beginning of investigation and later in the excavation phase by considering the disturbance factor D, which expresses disturbances caused by excavation methods and rock mass relaxation. The strength and deformability parameters of rocks of different quality are determined by the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion and applied to shallow and deep tunnels or slopes. Before the start of excavations work and after establishing the retaining measures, the analysis results are checked by monitoring. New methods include the determination of post peak strength parameters of rock mass after relaxation, and routine measurements. The newest measurement system however allows direct readings of displacements of the rock mass in both the elastic and post-peak states. With back analyses we determine the softening behavior of the rock mass and a possible need for increasing retaining measures. Such a design method enables the optimization of retaining measures and the reduction of investment costs.

Exploring approaches how to measure a lean process

Abstract: Purpose:The purpose of the research is to explore a practical method of measuring the implementation of lean in a process. The method will be based on examining the abilities of a group. At this scale the ability to work standardized and solve problems is important. These two abilities are dependent of each other and are fundamental for the group's ability to create a stable result. In this context the method of standardized work (SW) is define to be the methods used in a process to generate stable results. Problem solving (PS) is defined as the methods used to return a process to a condition where SW is possible. Methodology /approach: The research is conducted in a multiple case study in four large global manufacturing companies. The order of the data collection is: Firstly, interviews with the individuals that are centrally responsible for overall implementation of lean in the organization. Secondly, observe the implementation of SW and PS at the group level. In total 7 groups have been studied and 19 respondents interviewed. Findings: Results show that the central definition of the methods for standardized work does not by itself have a direct impact on success of implementation of SW at group level. The method of SW where similar on a general level in the different cases, but with varying levels of implementation at group level was applied. Results also show that key factors for a successful implementation of standardized work on group level are: Ownership of the process, Direct connection to result of process, Correct workload and Leader demand. Methods of PS at group level where dissimilar despite a superficially similar approach. The evaluation method used was successful in providing comparable results between the cases. Research limitations: A limitation of this research is within the scale of the measurement, as it only examines the group level. The research is further limited to four companies and seven groups. Originality/value of paper: This paper aims to fill a gap in the established measurement methods of lean, as it examines the abilities of SW and PS at the group level of a process. These abilities are often referred to as essential in lean theory. However, there has been little scholarly work in defining the methods of SW and PS or the key factors affecting the methods at an operational level.
