Sustainability engineering education
Peter Glavič, 2006, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: University sustainability education programmes in several European countries and the US have been compared to find common characteristics of the curricula in environmental science and engineering programmes. In particular, chemical engineering and applied chemistry departments have been focused here. Small, innovative European countries (Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, and Switzerland) have been in fore front. In bigger countries (France, Great Britain, Spain, and the US) programmes from some of the top 100 universities in Europe and the Americas have been considered, three from each country and seven from the US. The frequency of the courses in various groups and typical course titles are shown within each group. Evolution from pollution prevention courses to sustainability subjects is observed. The most employed textbooks are also provided.

How to compare companies on relevant dimensions of sustainability
Damjan Krajnc, Peter Glavič, 2005, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Dozens of frameworks of sustainability assessment that focus on the performance of companies have been suggested by now. They propose using numerous sustainability indicators, which are generally measured in very different units. While it is important to assess sustainability with several indicators, it may sometimes be difficult to make comparisons among companies based on a large number of performance measurements. This paper presents a model for designing a composite sustainable development index that depicts performance of companies along all the three dimensions of sustainability-economic, environmental, and societal. In the first part of thepaper, the procedure of calculating the index that would enable comparisonsof companies in specific sector regarding sustainability performance is presented. However, the emphasis of the paper is on the second part, where the effectiveness of the proposed model is illustrated with a casestudy in which two companies from specific sector are compared regarding their sustainability performance.

A model for integrated assessment of sustainable development
Damjan Krajnc, Peter Glavič, 2005, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The focus of the paper is on consideration of how to use indicators to monitor sustainable development in a relevant and useful manner. Integrated information on sustainable development of a company is very essential for decision-making since it is very difficult to evaluate the performance of the company on the ground of too many indicators. The objective of the work was to design a model for obtaining a composite sustainable development index (ICSD) in order to track integrated information on economic, environmental, and social performance of the company with time. Normalized indicators were associated into three sustainability sub-indices and finally composed into an overall indicator of a company performance. This was applied by determining the impact of individual indicator to the overall sustainability of a company using the concept of analytic hierarchy process. The demonstration of the model used data for a case study company, Henkel, and a set of sustainable development indicators that were classified using the currently most widely accepted approach of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Case study was used to measure ICSD and sustainability sub-indices of the company over the time interval of 6 years. Interpretation of results is given and the utility of ICSD with its relevance for decision-making is pointed out. Using a case study, the paper demonstrates that the model can be applied to deliver composite indicators of sustainability performance of companies.

Green Business - A Business of Sustainability
Žan Kokalj, 2016, diplomsko delo/naloga

Opis: Sustainability practices and sustainable development have been in close relation with human beings for a long time. This thesis aims to present historical aspects of sustainable development throughout the time, along with numerous green business ideas and green organizations presentations. From hunter-gatherers to ancient civilizations to fossil fuel era, historical review consists of connections between people from different times and places. Whilst moving from history to the present, the thesis offers insight in terms of green and sustainability-related definitions that help in understanding the idea behind terms such as green businesses, sustainable development, eco-innovations, green products, green consumer, green marketing, greenwashing, green certification, and carbon offsets and carbon credits. For better understanding of the related theoretical approaches, the thesis also offers a wide range of green business ideas such as green building and urban planning, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy sourcing, sustainable forestry, green transportation, green hair salon, green gym, green wedding planning, green cleaning services, recycling and waste management, and sustainable brewing. The benefits, issues and risks that green businesses are dealing with are also described. Green practices nowadays are represented by many individuals and organizations, of which some are also included in the research part of this thesis. 32 organizations have been interviewed and provided valuable data that was used in creating a brand new sustainability model, called ‘Path to sustainability’, which aims to connect vital sustainability fragments together in a wholesome system, along with connections between related fragments. Besides the model, the thesis also provides an overview of issues and restrictions that oppose sustainable development.

Sustainable rural development - EU agricultural perspective
Andreja Borec, Jernej Turk, 2009, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Rural areas are diverse worldwide but the paradigm of sustainable development and the improving of rural development has become an issue that occupies most of the world’s governments. The global goal is the same everywhere: to improve the well-being of rural people in the broadest possible sense, but the strategies are various and depend on many different factors and sectors. Throughout history, agriculture has always played a dominant role in the development of rural areas, but today its significance is under discussion in many countries. The EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has shifted from supporting agricultural production to supporting producers' income directly and with the objective of sustainable agriculture. Issues such as environmental sustainability, the viability of rural economies, food quality and animal health and welfare standards have become more prominent. In this paper, we try to review some key milestones and dates of CAP and to explain the new role for agriculture in rural areas through the concept of multifunctional agriculture. Multifunctionality is therefore argued as a model to bring post-modern agriculture up to speed with new societal demands. It emphasizes that, in addition to producing food and fiber, agriculture also produces a wide range of non-commodity goods and services, shapes the environment, affects social and cultural systems and contributes to economic growth. Although the concept is rather simple, its translation into policies remains, however controversial (Dobbs and Pretty, 2004) it may be. Thus, the need for further theoretical and empirical research support for deconstructing the multifunctional concept is crucial for sustainable agriculture and rural development in the near future.

Local governance and sustainable rural development
Mary Cawley, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper discusses the role of local governance partnerships in promoting sustainable rural development with reference to EU policy over the past two decades. Ireland’s experience is presented as an example. From the early 1990s on, new local partnerships associated with both EU and national approaches to rural development compensated for some of the deficiencies of weak local government in Ireland. Partly because of concerns relating to duplication of expenditure and democratic representation, the partnerships have gradually been brought more closely within the remit of the statutory local government structures. It remains to be seen how Irish rural development policy for 2007-2013 will be implemented within this changing context.

Theoretical scope of EM and sustainability
Marina Zhuravskaya, Elena Morozova, 2016, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: It is no secret that the amount of accumulated waste in Russia today is about 90 billion tons. And the situation is that distinct economic incentives for integrated waste management just do not exist (http://kn51.ru/news/society/ecology/2013/5/02/ekologiya-kak-indikator-zrelosti-obshchestva.html). Many people believe that there are only two ways of development: go back to primitive society or go forward to the inevitable destruction of the environment. However, there is an alternative that combines the preservation of the environment and social well-being – it is the concept of sustainable development.

Sustainability
Borut Jereb, Matjaž Knez, Darja Kukovič, Tina Cvahte, Matevž Obrecht, 2016, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Sustainable development aims to optimize the balance between economic, social and environmental objectives. Sustainable thinking reflects concerns about the long-term risks posed by the current consumption of resources, taking into account the objectives of intergenerational justice. This is clearly defined in the detailed definition of sustainable development by WCED (1987): "in essence, sustainable development is not a particular state of harmony, but rather a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, direction of investments, the orientation of technological investment and institutional changes are in harmony, in order to enhance the current and future potential to meet human needs and aspirations." The starting point is given by the economic and social development that meets human needs and desires, but also takes into account the natural resource base and social justice.
