Government-funded sustainable development and professionalisation of NGOs

Abstract: This paper addresses the first financial initiative of the Slovenian government for the professionalisation and development of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to promote sustainability in the third sector. The measure was the result of the Non-Governmental Organisations Act, adopted in 2018, and was followed by the Development strategy of non-governmental organisations and volunteering until 2023 (DSNGOV). The state’s contribution to an increased level of professionalisation was welcomed by NGOs because, compared to other EU28 states, which have an average employment rate of 4.18%, Slovenia is far behind, with only 0.82% of its active working population being employed in the NGO sector. In May 2018, the Ministry of Public Administration released invitations to fund projects for the development and professionalisation of NGOs and voluntary service, providing grants for 100 NGO jobs. The final project results were compiled in March 2020, and the findings were evaluated in 29 survey reports in April 2020. The research focused on the occupations for which employees were sought, legal forms of the applicant NGOs and recruitment methods. The results demonstrate that the state measure was successful, as 69% of the funded jobs were sustained. However, most of the retained jobs were filled by those who were previously employed in the NGO sector (84.6%), so the employment rate has barely risen.

Maintenance of heavy trucks : an international study on truck drivers

Abstract: Since the implementation of modern approaches in operation maintenance, drivers are expected to be integrated into the entire system of maintenance in order to take over the professional competencies of maintenance workers. For this purpose, an international study was conducted on a sample of 249 truck drivers, with the aim to determine how maintenance in transport companies affects the role of heavy truck drivers in fleet maintenance. Based on the developed SEM model, it was determined that building an efficient maintenance infrastructure in transport companies enables the active participation of truck drivers in the company’s maintenance system. Drivers are capable of repairing minor failures, but only if they are proactive, which will affect their preventive behaviour. This can greatly benefit transport companies, as the results show that the vehicles are utilised more efficiently and in a better technical condition. The results therefore represent an important guideline for improving maintenance in transport companies, developing new competencies of truck drivers and upgrading existing knowledge in the development of modern operation maintenance.

Socio-demographic and health factors drive the epidemic progression and should guide vaccination strategies for best COVID-19 containment

Abstract: We propose and study an epidemiological model on a social network that takes into account heterogeneity of the population and different vaccination strategies. In particular, we study how the COVID-19 epidemics evolves and how it is contained by different vaccination scenarios by taking into account data showing that older people, as well as individuals with comorbidities and poor metabolic health, and people coming from economically depressed areas with lower quality of life in general, are more likely to develop severe COVID-19 symptoms, and quicker loss of immunity and are therefore more prone to reinfection. Our results reveal that the structure and the spatial arrangement of subpopulations are important epidemiological determinants. In a healthier society the disease spreads more rapidly but the consequences are less disastrous as in a society with more prevalent chronic comorbidities. If individuals with poor health are segregated within one community, the epidemic outcome is less favorable. Moreover, we show that, contrary to currently widely adopted vaccination policies, prioritizing elderly and other higher-risk groups is beneficial only if the supply of vaccine is high. If, however, the vaccination availability is limited, and if the demographic distribution across the social network is homogeneous, better epidemic outcomes are achieved if healthy people are vaccinated first. Only when higher-risk groups are segregated, like in elderly homes, their prioritization will lead to lower COVID-19 related deaths. Accordingly, young and healthy individuals should view vaccine uptake as not only protecting them, but perhaps even more so protecting the more vulnerable socio-demographic groups.

COVID-19 vaccine boosters: the good, the bad, and the ugly

Abstract: Pursuing vaccinations against COVID-19 brings hope to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and remains the most rational decision under pandemic conditions. However, it does not come without challenges, including temporary shortages in vaccine doses, significant vaccine inequity, and questions regarding the durability of vaccine-induced immunity that remain unanswered. Moreover, SARS-CoV-2 has undergone evolution with the emergence of its novel variants, characterized by enhanced transmissibility and ability to at least partially evade neutralizing antibodies. At the same time, serum antibody levels start to wane within a few months after vaccination, ultimately increasing the risk of breakthrough infections. This article discusses whether the administration of booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines is urgently needed to control the pandemic. We conclude that, at present, optimizing the immunity level of wealthy populations cannot come at the expense of low-income regions that suffer from vaccine unavailability. Although the efficiency of vaccination in protecting from infection may decrease over time, current data show that efficacy against severe disease, hospitalization, and death remains at a high level. If vaccine coverage continues at extremely low levels in various regions, including African countries, SARS-CoV-2 may sooner or later evolve into variants better adapted to evade natural and vaccine-induced immunity, ultimately bringing a global threat that, of course, includes wealthy populations. We offer key recommendations to increase vaccination rates in low-income countries. The pandemic is, by definition, a major epidemiological event and requires looking beyond one's immediate self-interest; otherwise, efforts to contain it will be futile.

Sustainable developement in logistic : a strategy for management in terms of green transport

Abstract: Supply chain management is one of the most important elements of sustainable development. And due to the fact that the world market is driven by supply and demand, and the determinant of access to products is regional and international logistics, this paper focuses on the possibilities of implementing a green transport strategy in the context of sustainable development in logistic enterprises. This paper presents the results of the SWOT anal-ysis pointing out the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats of green vehicles market for the transport enterprises. It was noticed that the situation on the green vehicles market for the transport enterprises is charac-terized by the advantage of strengths and these strengths should be used to maximize the use of green vehicles. It emphasized that subsidies for green vehicles would allow to invest in a modern fleet, new solutions (e.g. own charging stations) can have an impact on the greater energy efficiency (self-sufficiency), increase of social aware-ness would force enterprises to take appropriate actions in the field of environmental protection and develop-ment of publictransport based on green vehicles.

Heritage tourism, retail revival and city center revitalization : a case study of Koper, Slovenia

Abstract: The focus of the paper is the revitalization of a heritage city center and the significance of retail trade and cruise ship tourism within this context. Fundamental concepts have been presented in the literature review and explored the factors contributing to the decline of old city centers. The empirical section of the paper comprises a case study that highlights a specific municipality's efforts to revive its heritage city center. The main attraction in Koper is its well-preserved medieval city center with five centuries old Venetian architecture. An analysis of the municipality's initiatives has been made and a qualitative study that investigates the perceptions and experiences of stakeholders regarding the situation and the municipality's actions to preserve commercial activity in the city center. The results of the semi-structured interviews conducted with three distinct stakeholder groups were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method. The findings reveal that the chosen municipality has achieved relative success in revitalizing its heritage city. Concurrently, stakeholders' perspectives were utilized to identify potential drawbacks and explore opportunities for mitigating them. The paper concludes by presenting theoretical and methodological contributions to the field of heritage city centers revitalization, not only in the selected municipality but also beyond. These insights inform the appropriate sustainable policy development and marketing strategy.

Abstract: In the summer of 2021, European governments removed most NPIs after experiencing prolonged second and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most countries failed to achieve immunization rates high enough to avoid resurgence of the virus. Public health strategies for autumn and winter 2021 have ranged from countries aiming at low incidence by re-introducing NPIs to accepting high incidence levels. However, such high incidence strategies almost certainly lead to the very consequences that they seek to avoid: restrictions that harm people and economies. At high incidence, the important pandemic containment measure ‘test-trace-isolate-support’ becomes inefficient. At that point, the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and its numerous harmful consequences can likely only be controlled through restrictions. We argue that all European countries need to pursue a low incidence strategy in a coordinated manner. Such an endeavour can only be successful if it is built on open communication and trust.

The role of B2B marketing strategy, ICT B2B marketing support, and service quality in market orientation – Performance relationship : evidence from three European countries

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of marketing strategy, information communication technology (ICT) marketing support, and service quality in the market orientation–performance relationship. Even though there are many studies considering the market orientation–performance relationship they rarely take into consideration ICT marketing support and marketing strategy, especially concerning the companies operating in B2B markets. Additionally, this study compares the impacts of the constructs between two emerging economies (Slovenia and Serbia) and one developed economy (Austria) on a random sample of 636 companies. Results were obtained based on the set hypotheses using the covariance-based structural equation modeling (SEM) and invariance testing procedure to make comparisons between the three countries. Market orientation strongly influenced the successful development and implementation of marketing strategies, ICT support, and service quality. The impact of service quality on company performance was statistically insignificant and only the indirect impact of market orientation on company performance through service quality was determined. ICT marketing support and successful development and implementation of B2B marketing strategy were also positively related to company performance. This study can help managers in B2B companies in emerging and developed markets to learn how to use specific marketing resources in order to achieve higher company performance.

The influence and application of social media in the fashion industry

Abstract: Social media marketing proved to be advantageous to all industries. If we consider the huge number of users on social networks and all the advantages they have, as well as their popularity, the fact arises that these networks provide significant business opportunities, i.e., contain great business potential, which they can use if they properly establish communication and advertising through these networks. Nowadays, fashion businesses are investing more time and resources into crafting social media strategies that will further customer loyalty, spread advertising messages, and raise brand awareness. Besides that, social media has a significant impact when it comes to advertising, spreading information, promoting, and selling brands. Social media platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest, are the most popular place for posting and advertising different content. Fashion is an exciting area of constant dynamic changes, and brands need to adapt to it, fashion companies cannot afford to ignore social media. This implies the importance of social media and how fashion firms can use it to their advantage. In conclusion, social media does not replace traditional media, but it does offer consumers pioneering way to interact with the brands they love. Without a doubt, digital media is the latest fashion trend in today's world, and we have every reason to believe in its strength and impact. It is an efficient and effective platform in terms of creating fashion trends and influencers, building brand recognition, and thus being accessible to both existing and potential buyers.
