1. The role of intelligent data analysis in selected endurance sports : a systematic literature reviewAlen Rajšp, Patrik Rek, Peter Kokol, Iztok Fister, 2025, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: In endurance sports, athletes and coaches shift increasingly from intuition-based decisionmaking to data-driven approaches powered by modern technology and analytics. Since 2018, the field has experienced significant advances, influencing endurance sports disciplines. This systematic literature review identified 75 peer-reviewed studies on intelligent data analysis in endurance sports training. Each study was categorized by its intelligent method (e.g., machine learning, deep learning, computational intelligence), the types of sensors and wearables used, and the specific training application and approach. Our synthesis reveals that machine learning and deep learning are among the most used approaches, with running and cycling identified as the most extensively studied sports. Physiological and environmental data, such as heart rate, biomechanical signals, and GPS, are often used to aid in generating personalized training plans, predicting injuries, and increasing athletes’ long-term performance. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, related to data quality and the small participant sample sizes. 2. University teachers’ attitudes towards ESP and EMI in Croatian higher education : implications for internationalisation and curriculum developmentAna Penjak, Simon Zupan, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Following the Bologna Process (2001) and Croatia’s accession to the European Union (2013), English has assumed a more prominent role in Croatian higher education (HE). While Croatian remains the dominant language of instruction, universities are increasingly expected to internationalise their programmes through English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses. This study analyses the attitudes of content-area (non-language) university teachers at the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Split, Croatia, towards the use of English in their teaching, focusing particularly on ESP and EMI. The aim is to examine how these attitudes contribute to the internationalisation of HE and support students’ academic and professional development through discipline-specific English instruction. The results obtained from the data collected using an online questionnaire indicate strong support for ESP course integration, with most teachers recognising its value in enhancing students’ employability and domain-specific language proficiency. While EMI was not addressed directly, several items suggest teachers are aware of EMI-related demands and express positive attitudes towards its benefits. Notably, teachers with Erasmus experience showed greater confidence in English and more openness to EMI. These findings highlight the need to expand ESP offerings, strengthen EMI-related training, and develop institutional language policies aligned with internationalisation goals. 3. Exploring the relationship between anaerobic and morphological characteristics and competition success in young male Slovenian judo athletesJožef Šimenko, Nik Mahnič, David Kukovica, Hrvoje Sertić, Ivan Segedi, Radoje Milić, Damir Karpljuk, Bayram Ceylan, Samo Rauter, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Judo elements rely on lower and upper body muscle power, supported by the ATP-PCr energy system, which is crucial in high-intensity tasks. This study aims to assess the anaerobic status of young male competitive judokas using the upper body Wingate test and explore associations with competition performance and individual morphological characteristics. A total of 29 male judokas from the U18 and U20 age categories were tested, all actively participating in top-tier national and international competitions. Anthropometric characteristics and body composition measurements were obtained for all participants through bioelectrical impedance analysis. Anaerobic testing was conducted using the upper body Wingate test with a hand ergometer. Competition performance was recorded from the final national cup ranking list. The results presented no statistically significant correlations between morphological and anaerobic variables and competitive performance among selected participants. This highlights the importance of the necessity of updated training programs to increase the anaerobic performance of young Slovenian judokas. Additionally, it shows that in these age groups, anaerobic performance is not the crucial factor but just one piece of the puzzle in young judokas’ successful competition performance; therefore other variables should be further researched. 6. The role of strategic management in the business success of sports organizations: Research of Celje football club in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasonsNikolay Rzhevskiy, 2024, diplomsko delo Opis: This diploma illustrates that the success of FC Celje is not merely the result of on-field talent but a comprehensive strategic management framework that supports and enhances every aspect of the club's operations. By examining the club's strategic management practices of the past two seasons, this study provides valuable insights into how sports organizations can achieve and sustain success through effective management practices, financial management, talent development, and community engagement. This thesis's findings underscore that the success of any organization begins with a well-defined strategy. Strategic management provides the framework for setting long-term goals, aligning resources, and navigating the complexities of the sports industry. However, the study also brings to light the equally important role of operational management.
The insights gained from the experience of FC Celje demonstrate that a holistic approach, combining strategic and operational management, is essential for achieving and sustaining success. By understanding and applying these principles, sports organizations can build a solid foundation for long-term growth, improve their competitive edge, and enhance their overall performance. This thesis offers a practical guide for other clubs seeking to replicate the success of FC Celje, emphasizing the importance of strategic foresight coupled with meticulous operational execution. 7. Digital twins in sport : concepts, taxonomies, challenges and practical potentialsTilen Hliš, Iztok Fister, Iztok Fister, 2024, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: Digital twins belong to ten of the strategic technology trends according to the Gartner list from 2019, and have encountered a big expansion, especially with the introduction of Industry 4.0. Sport, on the other hand, has become a constant companion of the modern human suffering a lack of a healthy way of life. The application of digital twins in sport has brought dramatic changes not only in the domain of sport training, but also in managing athletes during competitions, searching for strategical solutions before and tactical solutions during the games by coaches. In this paper, the domain of digital twins in sport is reviewed based on papers which have emerged in this area. At first, the concept of a digital twin is discussed in general. Then, taxonomies of digital twins are appointed. According to these taxonomies, the collection of relevant papers is analyzed, and some real examples of digital twins are exposed. The review finishes with a discussion about how the digital twins affect changes in the modern sport disciplines, and what challenges and opportunities await the digital twins in the future. 8. Digital twin in sport: from an idea to realizationLuka Lukač, Iztok Fister, Iztok Fister, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: A digital twin is a virtual model to reflect a physical object and helps it by making proper decisions. The decision-making process is based on the same input data that the simulated physical object has access to. Due to exploiting artificial intelligence, the decision-making process of the digital twin is more sophisticated than that of the physical object. In this study, the digital twin is applied to the sports training domain, where it addresses those questions that have arisen during the implementation of interval cycling training sessions. Thus, the digital twin runs on a mobile device (i.e., the Raspberry Pi platform), with which a cycle is equipped and demonstrates user-friendliness, robustness, reliability, and accuracy. The interval training sessions are transferred to the mobile device in the form of the domain-specific language EasyTrain, ensuring higher expressive power and ease of use. During the implementation, the digital twin advises the athlete with predicted information obtained by a sophisticated prediction model via a screen. The results of a huge experimental work showed that the difference in the average efficiency of the interval training implementation between the two cyclists that performed the experiments is prominent, as the efficiency of the professional training surpassed 90%, while the amateur training efficiency barely achieved 70%. 9. Effects of high-load and low-load resistance training in patients with coronary artery disease : rationale and design of a randomised controlled clinical trialTim Kambič, Nejc Šarabon, Vedran Hadžić, Mitja Lainščak, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Introduction: Resistance training (RT) combined with aerobic training (AT) enhances the effects of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, it remains to be investigated which type of RT (high loads (HLs) vs low loads (LLs)) is more efficacious in improving exercise performance, cardio-metabolic health and quality of life.
Methods and analysis: A randomised, controlled, clinical trial will enrol 20 patients with CAD into each of three study arms (total 60 patients): HL-RT (70%–80% of one repetition maximum (1-RM)) combined with AT; LL-RT (30%–40% of 1-RM) combined with AT and AT alone as standard care. Primary outcomes (maximal aerobic capacity, maximal leg isometric strength) will be assessed at baseline and after 36 training sessions. Other outcomes will include acute haemodynamic responses to LL-RT and HL-RT, body composition, physical performance, blood biomarkers (lipids, glucose metabolism, inflammation, growth factors), physical activity and quality of life. The intention-to-treat principle will be used to analyse the data.
Ethics and dissemination: The study design and protocol have been approved by the National Medical Ethics Committee of Slovenia (registration number: 0120-573/2019/15). The study will be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. The results of the study will be published as peer-reviewed manuscripts and congress presentations, communicated with patients and the clinical community, and shared through posts on social media. The findings of the study will be disseminated among the national CR clinical community (CR centres, Slovenian association of coronary clubs) with active participation of the patients enrolled in the study. This study will expand our knowledge of RT in combination with AT in CR. We expect to find different effects of HL-RT versus LL-RT, with implications for RT strategies in rehabilitation of patients with CAD. 10. Associations between physical activity and academic competence : a cross-sectional study among Slovenian primary school studentsJoca Zurc, Jurij Planinšec, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Physical activity has beneficial effects on overall academic performance in children. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding how the individual characteristics of physical activity interact with other confounding variables of academic competence. Leisure-time physical activity with potential confounders—such as developmental, behavioral, family, and school factors, predicting overall, mathematical, and reading academic competence—was studied in a random sample of 1520 Slovenian primary school students in grades 4–6 (51.9% female; mean age = 10.4 years; SD = 0.93). A structured self-reported questionnaire was used to gather data on the children’s leisuretime physical activity and social-demographic variables, while academic competence was measured by teachers using the SSRS Academic Competence Evaluation Scale. The findings showed that children engage in physical activity most days a week, with moderate-intensity and unorganized activities. It was predicted that engaging in physical activity would lead to an increase in academic performance by 4.2% in males (p = 0.002) and 3.2% in females (p = 0.024), but after fully adjusting the model for controlling confounding variables, the prediction increased to 81.1% in females and 84.1% in males (p < 0.001). The frequency and intensity of physical activity, the absence of digital games, and attending sports clubs seem to have the most beneficial effects in terms of academic competence in school children, among other relevant confounders mediating in this complex relationship.
