BEHAVIORAL SHIFTS IN THE TRANSLATIONS OF SELECTED PICTURE BOOKS

Opis: The purpose of the MA thesis was to explore three English picture books (Sometimes I Like to Curl up in a Ball, The Slurpy Burpy Bear and The Gruffalo) and their Slovene translations (Včasih se rad kotalim kakor žoga, Rigajoči medved and Zverjasec) in regard to inappropriate child behavior which is usually deemed socially unacceptable by adults. Therefore, the aim of my qualitative research was to scrutinize such behavioral occurrences by using comparative and hermeneutic analysis, and to provide inductive reasons with thick description as to why these translation shifts occurred. The empirical part, in which I analyzed relevant sample passages in verbal (and visual) context, has led me to three major categories: “Discrepancy between Childish Authenticity and Social Values”, “Politeness” and “Demonization”. These revealed that corrective changes cannot be applied to Slovene picture book translation in general, but are subject to the individual translator’s child image.

Marketing mix and tourism destination image

Opis: Background and Purpose: The aim of the research was to find out how business partners from the field of tourism estimate the dimensions of the image of Bled and the marketing mix used to promote Bled. Further on we were interested in evaluating the influence of image and marketing mix on the scope of sales measured in overnights. The following dimensions of image were explored: perceived uniqueness of image as a whole, perceived uniqueness of attractions and experiences, perceived quality of the environment (cleanness), perceived feeling of safety, as well as the dimensions of the marketing mix: perceived quality of products (accommodation, culinary offer, transfers, etc.), perceived price of services, perceived manner of sales for the promotion of Bled, perception of promotional channels, perception of residents (politeness, friendliness, multicultural and religious openness, etc.) and a positive experience of visiting Slovenia. Design/Methodology/Approach: The survey was dispensed among 400 incoming agencies, foreign tour operators, tourist agencies and associations that promote the product of Bled. 235 units were received, 164 of them were completed. The respondents come from 30 countries from all over the world. Results: The findings disclose how service quality, tourist provider competencies and environmental factors are estimated. Safety at Bled has the highest arithmetic mean and the lowest standard deviation. The lowest ranking is linked to traffic and tolerance towards other religions. It is alarming to find the service quality, as the core of tourism business, rated poorly during the main season. Conclusion: Having overviewed the available literature it might be concluded that the analysis can be regarded as the first research of the tourist destination Bled performed in this manner and scope.

Characterization of heterogeneous arc welds through miniature tensile testing and Vickers-hardness mapping

Opis: The heterogeneity of arc-welded connections is often ignored in structural assessments, giving rise to inaccuracies. Improved assessments taking into account heterogeneity require the characterization of local constitutive properties. We have compared two methods to do this: Vickers-hardness mapping and miniature tensile testing. Whereas the former is more straightforward to apply, the latter provides full-range stress-strain data. This paper discusses an experimental comparison of both methods on a heterogeneous arc weld. Miniature tensile tests were performed, using digital image correlation to measure the strain. The specimens were indented to compare their stress-strain response with Vickers hardness. Notwithstanding that small natural flaws invalidated some tests, reliable stress-strain curves were obtained. Vickers hardness testing is a convenient alternative if the yield and ultimate tensile strength are the only points of interest and the corresponding conversion inaccuracy is acceptable.

Relationships among store image and store loyalty in Slovenia

Opis: Image has become one of the most important factors of stores’ survival and development. In this paper, a model of relationships among the multidimensional variables of store image, positive affect, satisfaction with the store, trust and commitment to the store is formed and tested with a sample of 209 customers in three stores in the Pomurje region of Slovenia. The important conclusion of the research is that several interrelations among store image, positive affect, satisfaction, trust and store commitment exist. The results also show significant gender differences in perceptions of store image. These results provide several important insights for managing supermarkets in the Slovenian market and are also important for future research.

Intelligent system for prediction of mechanical properties of material based on metallographic images

Opis: This article presents developed intelligent system for prediction of mechanical properties of material based on metallographic images. The system is composed of two modules. The first module of the system is an algorithm for features extraction from metallographic images. The first algorithm reads metallographic image, which was obtained by microscope, followed by image features extraction with developed algorithm and in the end algorithm calculates proportions of the material microstructure. In this research we need to determine proportions of graphite, ferrite and ausferrite from metallographic images as accurately as possible. The second module of the developed system is a system for prediction of mechanical properties of material. Prediction of mechanical properties of material was performed by feed-forward artificial neural network. As inputs into artificial neural network calculated proportions of graphite, ferrite and ausferrite were used, as targets for training mechanical properties of material were used. Training of artificial neural network was performed on quite small database, but with parameters changing we succeeded. Artificial neural network learned to such extent that the error was acceptable. With the oriented neural network we successfully predicted mechanical properties for excluded sample.

Poslovno komuniciranje

Opis: Človeško telo s svojimi čutili vsako minuto zazna okoli 10.000 senzoričnih zaznav. Zaznave imajo različne pojavne oblike in so: vizualne zaznave, zaznave zvoka, vonja, temperature, okusa, bolečine in prostorskega položaja telesa (ravnotežja). Na osnovi zaznav iz fizičnega sveta v človekovih možganih nastanejo percepcije, kognicije in čustva. Pri sprejemanju in oddajanju sporočil sodeluje človekovo telo kot celota. Knjiga izhaja iz konceptov percepcijske organizacije. Tako, kot pri človekovem komuniciranju sodeluje telo kot celota, je tudi komuniciranje percepcijske organizacije treba obravnavati kot celoto. Vsebina komuniciranja se z vidika organizacije nanaša na vse atribute identitete organizacije. Z vidika okolja pa se nanaša na norme, potrebe, pričakovanja in želje do organizacije. Pojavne oblike komuniciranja organizacije z okoljem so: interpersonalno komuniciranje managementa in zaposlenih z okoljem, komuniciranje organizacije preko spletnih kanalov, marketinško komuniciranje, odnosi z javnostmi, odnosi z vlagatelji, pogajanja, lobiranje in krizno komuniciranje.

The accuracy of the germination rate of seeds based on image processing and artificial neural networks

Opis: This paper describes a computer vision system based on image processing and machine learning techniques which was implemented for automatic assessment of the tomato seed germination rate. The entire system was built using open source applications Image J, Weka and their public Java classes and linked by our specially developed code. After object detection, we applied artificial neural networks (ANN), which was able to correctly classify 95.44% of germinated seeds of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

An overview of image analysis algorithms for license plate recognition

Opis: Background and purpose: We explore the problem of License Plate Recognition (LPR) to highlight a number of algorithms that can be used in image analysis problems. In management support systems using image object recognition, the intelligence resides in the statistical algorithms that can be used in various LPR steps. We describe a number of solutions, from the initial thresholding step to localization and recognition of image elements. The objective of this paper is to present a number of probabilistic approaches in LPR steps, then combine these approaches together in one system. Most LPR approaches used deterministic models that are sensitive to many uncontrolled issues like illumination, distance of vehicles from camera, processing noise etc. The essence of our approaches resides in the statistical algorithms that can accurately localize and recognize license plate. Design/Methodology/Approach: We introduce simple and inexpensive methods to solve relatively important problems, using probabilistic approaches. In these approaches, we describe a number of statistical solutions, from the initial thresholding step to localization and recognition of image elements. In the localization step, we use frequency plate signals from the images which we analyze through the Discrete Fourier Transform. Also, a probabilistic model is adopted in the recognition of plate characters. Finally, we show how to combine results from bilingual license plates like Saudi Arabia plates. Results: The algorithms provide the effectiveness for an ever-prevalent form of vehicles, building and properties management. The result shows the advantage of using the probabilistic approached in all LPR steps. The averaged classification rates when using local dataset reached 79.13%. Conclusion: An improvement of recognition rate can be achieved when there are two source of information especially of license plates that have two independent texts.
