Supplementary material for paper Modeling compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines: the critical role of trust in science
Nejc Plohl, Bojan Musil, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The coronavirus pandemic is one of the biggest health crises of our time. In response to this global problem, various institutions around the world had soon issued evidence-based prevention guidelines. However, these guidelines, which were designed to slow the spread of COVID-19 and contribute to public well-being, are (deliberately) disregarded by some individuals. In the present study, we aimed to develop and test a multivariate model that could help us identify individual characteristics that make a person more/less likely to comply with COVID-19 prevention guidelines. A total of 525 attentive participants completed the online survey. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) show that COVID-19 risk perception and trust in science both independently predict compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, while the remaining variables in the model (political conservatism, religious orthodoxy, conspiracy ideation and intellectual curiosity) do so via the mediating role of trust in science. The described model exhibited an acceptable fit ([chi sup]2(1611) = 2485.84, [rho]<.001, CFI=.91, RMSEA=.032, SRMR=.055). These findings thus provide empirical support for the proposed multivariate model and underline the importance of trust in science in explaining the different levels of compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

Questionable research practices
Gorazd Meško, Aleksander Koporec, 2010, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: The purpose of this article is to discuss deviance in science due to increasing pressures on researchers and higher education pedagogues to be more effective and efficient in the ‘academic production’. Design/Methods/Approach: A literature review and reflection. Findings: The authors present a criminological view of deviance in science, discussing the perception of unsuitable scientific and research practices, questionable research practices, ethics and integrity in science, suitable behaviour of researchers in scientific work, and make recommendations for improving the ethics of scientific research in practice. The discussion on deviance in science is based on Merton’s principles of science (1973): the public presentation of knowledge and sharing of ideas, leading to common ownership of scientific discoveries, in which scientists disclaim their intellectual rights to their own insights in exchange for recognition and reputation. An impartial approach and universalism, in which truth is judged by impersonal, universal criteria, rather than based on race, social and economic status, sex, faith, or nationality and other subjective categories is presented and questioned. A non-profit/selfless orientation in which scientists are rewarded for selfless activities, and planned/organized scepticism – that all ideas must be tested, subject to rigorous scientific rules and public disclosure. The authors discuss these principles and connect them with scientific and research practice in Slovenia and abroad. Research limitations/implications: Research results are generalisable as deviance in science occurs in all cultures and have a global impact. Deviance in science is still an under-researched taboo topic and it needs to be discussed. Practical implications: A useful source of information for awareness raising and the improvement of quality of research work. Originality/Value: This paper extends understanding of possible deviance in science and factors related to such practices. The main value of this reflection is to facilitate understanding of factors of deviance in science and trigger a discussion on deviance among scientists.

An Analysis of the Dramatization of 19th Century Medical Science in the Television Show The Knick
Dejan Preradović, 2018, magistrsko delo

Opis: I researched how accurate the dramatization of medical science is in the television series The Knick. The thesis is separated into two parts. In the first part, I analyze the accuracy of the depiction of real persons in the series. The main character John Thackery is an adaptation of the real-life surgeon William Halsted. The character of Dr. Cotton is a dramatization of the real psychiatrist named Henry Cotton. The series also adapts the story of Mary Mallon, who was a healthy carrier of typhoid fever and was responsible for spreading the disease in households where she worked as a cook. In the second part of my thesis, I analyze the accuracy of the medical science depicted in the series and explain how the producers used visual effects to achieve historical accuracy.

Web graphic organizers as an advanced strategy for teaching science textbook reading comprehension
Marija Ropič, Metka Kordigel Aberšek, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents the results of the 5 months experiment in which the influence of using a web graphic organizer in the science literacy curriculum was observed. The interest of the study was focused on the quality and quantity of learning/understanding the explicatory text description from the science textbook. The experiment included students at the age of 8-9 years. Science and L1 class were integrated for this purpose: teachers were instructed to use web graphic organizer as a tool for visualizing the text structure on the level of concrete cognitive operations. The results show the effect of using the web graphic organizer on students' competence to find out what in the science textbook text is important, on the level of text comprehension and on the competence of comparing new information with the previous knowledge.

Commercialization methods of a new product/service in ICT industry
Alireza Aslani, Hossein Eftekhari, Mahdi Hamidi, Bahareh Nabavi, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: Commercialization is a step toward new products/services development. Due to high rate of product/service failure in ICT industry, the purpose of this paper is to study and evaluate commercialization methods implemented by companies that operate within ICT industry at the Science and Technology Park of University of Tehran. Design/Methodology/Approach: The methodology of this study is of field research type. After examining commercialization methods presented in the literature and confirming methods found by the discipline elite, structured interviews were conducted addressed managers and experts of ICT companies. Results: Three methods of “joint research contracts”, “exhibitions” and “spin-offs” are among the most common commercialization methods used by companies. Conclusion: Due to uncertainties that exist in ICT industry, companies should consider different strategies in order to develop successful products and services. Finally, specific policies are determined to implement each commercialization method in knowledge-based companies.

High-school Students' Use of Fantasy and Science Fiction Reading for Escapism
Janja Papac, 2017, magistrsko delo

Opis: The thesis “High-school Students’ Use of Fantasy and Science Fiction Reading for Escapism” encompasses findings connected to adolescence and young adult literature. We present the emotional, cognitive and social characteristics of adolescence. We take a look at the influence that childhood traumas and defense mechanisms may have on adolescents. We also present findings connected to escapism and reading therapy. The genres from the title – fantasy and science fiction - are described, as well as their history. We also described fairytales and folktales. We took a closer look at the Harry Potter book series and the opinion some critics have about its influence on youth, as well as some well-known fairytales children can identify with. In the empirical part, we presented the results of a survey created to examine the reading habits and motivation of high-school students. We found that high-school students’ general satisfaction with life does not greatly influence their choice of reading materials.

Coordination of school science classroom furnishings with anthropometric parameters for 11-12 year-old children
Nataša Rizman Herga, Samo Fošnarič, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The aim of the research was to explore the size suitability of school furnishings with the help of anthropometric measurements established on 11-12 year-old pupils. These pupils who have switched from single classroom teaching to teaching by subject and have lessons in specialized classrooms that are designed for a specific school subject. We were interested in the discrepancies between pupils' anthropometric dimensions and the size of school furniture in science classrooms. The study included 192 pupils (N=192) in the 6th and 7th grades of primary schools in North-Eastern Slovenia. Readings were made of the pupils' anthropometric dimensions, including stature, popliteal height, buttock-popliteal length, elbow height sitting, thigh thickness, subscapular height and hip width. Measurements of the school furniture showed that the dimensions of desks designed according to ISO 5970 correspond to a size 6 (for those between 173 and 184 cm tall). Results of the anthropometric measurements have shown that 6th grade pupils are on average 152 cm tall, 7th grade pupils 160 cm. The research thus indicated a serious mismatch between school furnishings and the anthropometric dimensions, an issue which can have serious consequences for pupils' development.
