1. Honey bee colony winter loss rates for 35 countries participating in the COLOSS survey for winter 2018-2019, and the effects of a new queen on the risk of colony winter lossAlison Gray, Aleš Gregorc, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This article presents managed honey bee colony loss rates over winter 2018/19 resulting from using the standardised COLOSS questionnaire in 35 countries (31 in Europe). In total, 28,629 beekeepers supplying valid loss data wintered 738,233 colonies, and reported 29,912 (4.1%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.0%4.1%) colonies with unsolvable queen problems, 79,146 (10.7%, 95% CI 10.5%10.9%) dead colonies after winter and 13,895 colonies (1.9%, 95% CI 1.8%2.0%) lost through natural disaster. This gave an overall colony winter loss rate of 16.7% (95% CI 16.4%16.9%), varying greatly between countries, from 5.8% to 32.0%. We modelled the risk of loss as a dead/empty colony or from unresolvable queen problems, and found that, overall, larger beekeeping operations with more than 150 colonies experienced significantly lower losses (p<0.001), consistent with earlier studies. Additionally, beekeepers included in this survey who did not migrate their colonies at least once in 2018 had significantly lower losses than those migrating (p<0.001). The percentage of new queens from 2018 in wintered colonies was also examined as a potential risk factor. The percentage of colonies going into winter with a new queen was estimated as 55.0% over all countries. Higher percentages of young queens corresponded to lower overall losses (excluding losses from natural disaster), but also lower losses from unresolvable queen problems, and lower losses from winter mortality (p<0.001). Detailed results for each country and overall are given in a table, and a map shows relative risks of winter loss at regional level. 2. The puzzle of scientific disagreementMariangela Zoe Cocchiaro, Borut Trpin, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Scientists often find themselves in disagreement with their peers, yet continue to hold fast to their views. While Conciliationism, a prominent position in the epistemology of disagreement, condemns such steadfastness as epistemically irrational, philosophers of science often defend it as rationally permissible–indeed, even beneficial for scientific progress. This tension gives rise to what we call the puzzle of scientific disagreement. 3. Integrating computer science and informatics education in primary schools : insights from a Slovenian professional development initiativeAndrej Flogie, Alenka Lipovec, Jakob Škrobar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this study, we present a professional development programme for teachers launched to introduce Computer Science and Informatics (CSI) in primary education in Slovenia. The study aims to examine which CSI core concepts teachers most frequently choose to integrate into their lessons when given the freedom to select the topics within the framework, and to explore how students engage with and respond to these activities, as reported in teachers’ reflections. This study is based on reflective feedback from forty-seven teachers from seven primary schools who implemented interdisciplinary lessons that integrate CSI content into existing primary school curricula. Qualitative data from 152 reflections were used to support our research findings. The results show that teachers most frequently introduced the concepts from the content area of algorithms and programming. In contrast, content areas such as computing systems, networks and the internet, data and analysis, and impacts of computing received less attention. Teachers reported that students were motivated and engaged, although some challenges emerged, including difficulties in solving tasks or following instructions. As this pilot study reports on the first year of a two-year initiative, the findings provide preliminary insights into how a structured professional development programme for teachers can support interdisciplinary approaches in CSI education. 4. Challenges in algorithmic implementation : the FLoCIC algorithm as a case study in tehnology-enhanced computer science educationDavid Jesenko, Borut Žalik, Štefan Kohek, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Learning and implementing algorithms is a fundamental but challenging aspect of Computer Science education. One of the key tools used in teaching algorithms is pseudocode, which serves as an abstract representation of the logic behind a given algorithm. This study explores the educational value of the FLoCIC (Few Lines of Code for Image Compression) algorithm, which is designed to teach lossless image compression through algorithmic implementation, particularly within the context of multimedia data. Image compression represents a typical multimedia task that combines algorithmic thinking with practical problem-solving. By analysing questionnaire responses (N = 121) from undergraduate and graduate students, this study identifies critical challenges in pseudocode-based learning, including understanding complex algorithmic components and debugging recursive functions. This paper highlights the influence of prior knowledge in areas such as data structures, compression, and algorithms in general on the success of students in completing the task, with graduate students demonstrating stronger results compared to undergraduates. The study analyses the role of external resources and online code repositories, further revealing their utility in supporting implementation efforts but highlighting the need for a fundamental understanding of the algorithm for successful implementation. The findings highlight the importance of promoting conceptual understanding and practical problem-solving skills to improve student learning in algorithmic tasks. 6. University teachers’ attitudes towards ESP and EMI in Croatian higher education : implications for internationalisation and curriculum developmentAna Penjak, Simon Zupan, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Following the Bologna Process (2001) and Croatia’s accession to the European Union (2013), English has assumed a more prominent role in Croatian higher education (HE). While Croatian remains the dominant language of instruction, universities are increasingly expected to internationalise their programmes through English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses. This study analyses the attitudes of content-area (non-language) university teachers at the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Split, Croatia, towards the use of English in their teaching, focusing particularly on ESP and EMI. The aim is to examine how these attitudes contribute to the internationalisation of HE and support students’ academic and professional development through discipline-specific English instruction. The results obtained from the data collected using an online questionnaire indicate strong support for ESP course integration, with most teachers recognising its value in enhancing students’ employability and domain-specific language proficiency. While EMI was not addressed directly, several items suggest teachers are aware of EMI-related demands and express positive attitudes towards its benefits. Notably, teachers with Erasmus experience showed greater confidence in English and more openness to EMI. These findings highlight the need to expand ESP offerings, strengthen EMI-related training, and develop institutional language policies aligned with internationalisation goals. 7. Sacrificing natural kinds : Fodor’s legacy and the unity of scienceTadej Todorović, Janez Bregant, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The article reevaluates Jerry Fodor’s key argument for the autonomy of the special sciences, which rests on the notion of multiple realization and the claim that special science predicates must be natural kinds. After outlining how Fodor’s view was shaped by the “syntactic” conception of scientific theories, it shows that the recent “semantic” approach in scientific theories challenges the idea that special science kinds must be natural and ontologically committing. On the semantic account, scientific models often invoke idealized or domain-specific predicates that do not have to be natural. We use Fodor’s example – Gresham’s law – to articulate a semantic perspective that preserves the unity of science: higher-level explanations can remain useful, real, and relatively autonomous without irreducible natural kinds. By “sacrificing” natural kinds, we retain the explanatory powers of the special sciences, create a simpler ontological picture of the world, and justify the modus operandi of the sciences, such as cognitive science, where knowledge from the different levels or disciplines that constitute it informs and refines our overall understanding of the world. 8. Higher-order evidence in science : some problematic consequences of steadfastness and level-splittingMartin Justin, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Despite our best efforts, we often fail to act in a perfectly rational manner. Recently, some epistemologists have suggested that we should admit our failings and develop a modest epistemology that would take our fallibility seriously. This includes accounting for the role of evidence of our irrationality, usually called higher-order evidence. It seems intuitive that modest reasoners should take such evidence into account. However, it turns out that incorporating higher-order evidence into a principled theory of what rationality requires is not an easy task. In this paper, I first review the debate about higher-order evidence, describing in detail the puzzle of higher-order evidence and the main positions about it in the literature. Then, I provide two novel examples of higher-order evidence, taken from science. I argue that these examples put pressure on the views that reject the role of higher-order evidence. These views commit themselves to the conclusion that some common scientific practices, such as evaluating evidence in systematic reviews or even running null hypothesis significance tests, are irrational. 9. Approaches to educational activities and construction of an informatics curriculumDarko Etinger, Marina Diković, Hrvoje Alilović, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The research section of the paper explores elementary school students' satisfaction with informatics. This research was carried out using the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Four subscales were used: Expectation, Satisfaction, Quality, and Values. The number of Croatian elementary school pupils investigated (from Brod-Posavina County) is 135 (N). Research results show that pupils have high expectations of informatics, including that it will progressively meet their expectations and help them to receive a quality education. It can also be concluded that the problems once faced by students, such as classroom and equipment quality, are becoming much smaller compared to previous years. 10. Student-centred instruction in science and technology : a model of factors at organizational and individual levelsPetra Pejić Papak, Milena Valenčič Zuljan, Darjo Zuljan, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: To achieve the goals of modern science and technology teaching, it is vital to organize student-centred instruction (SCI). The organization of SCI requires the teacher’s ability to organize cognitively challenging teaching in a stimulating environment. The fundamental purpose of the study was to determine whether the teacher’s organization of SCI was related to factors at the school level (organizational context) and factors at the individual level (individual context). We designed a model comprising four sets of factors. The results show a statistically significant correlation between SCI and all four sets of factors.
