3. Influence of Al2O3 nanoparticles addition in ZA-27 alloy-based nanocomposites and soft computing predictionAleksandar Vencl, Petr Svoboda, Simon Klančnik, Adrian But, Miloš Vorkapić, Marta Harničárová, Blaža Stojanović, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Three different and very small amounts of alumina (0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 wt. %) in two sizes (approx. 25 and 100 nm) were used to enhance the wear characteristics of ZA-27 alloy-based nanocomposites. Production was realised through mechanical alloying in pre-processing and compocasting processes. Wear tests were under lubricated sliding conditions on a block-on-disc tribometer, at two sliding speeds (0.25 and 1 m/s), two normal loads (40 and 100 N) and a sliding distance of 1000 m. Experimental results were analysed by applying the response surface methodology (RSM) and a suitable mathematical model for the wear rate of tested nanocomposites was developed. Appropriate wear maps were constructed and the wear mechanism is discussed in this paper. The accuracy of the prediction was evaluated with the use of an artificial neural network (ANN). The architecture of the used ANN was 4-5-1 and the obtained overall regression coefficient was 0.98729. The comparison of the predicting methods showed that ANN is more efficient in predicting wear. 4. UCHL1, besides leptin and fibronectin, also could be a sensitive marker of the relapsing–remitting type of multiple sclerosisEwelina Görska, Marzena Tylicka, Adam Hermanowicz, Ewa Matuszczak, Anna Sankiewicz, Ewa Gorodkiewicz, Justyna Hermanowicz, Elźbieta Karpińska, Katarzyna Socha, Jan Kochanowicz, Evgenija Homšak, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Research on the markers of immunoregulatory response in multiple sclerosis (MS) is still of great importance. The aim of our study was the evaluation of leptin, fibronectin, and UCHL1 concentrations as potential biomarkers of a relapsing-remitting type of MS (RRMS). Surface Plasmon Resonance Imaging (SPRI) biosensors were used for the evaluation of proteins concentrations in 100 RRMS patients and 46 healthy volunteers. Plasma leptin, fibronectin, and UCHL1 concentrations were significantly higher in RRMS patients compared to the control group (p < 0.001, respectively). UCHL1 concentration evaluation revealed the highest diagnostic sensitivity (100%) and negative predictive value (100%) in differentiating MS patients from healthy individuals. There was no significant difference in the UCHL1 concentrations depending on the patient's sex, the presence of relapse within the last 24 months, and the EDSS value (p > 0.05, respectively). In RRMS patients UCHL1 concentration positively correlated with fibronectin levels (r = 0.3928; p < 0.001). In the current cohort of patients plasma UCHL1 concentration was independent of the time of MS relapse and the severity of neurological symptoms. Thus current study may indicate that plasma UCHL1, besides leptin and fibronectin, also could be a promising high-sensitive potential biomarker of relapsing-remitting type of MS. However, these results should be validated with a larger group of patients, taking into account neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis data, and by comparing them to patients with other neurological diseases as a control group. 6. Response surface method-based optimization of outer rotor permanent magnet synchronous motorVahid Rafiee, Jawad Faiz, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a prominent analysis approach. Although it is applicable for simulation and optimization of electrical machines, FEM is a very time-consuming technique. One of the approaches to shorten the optimization runtime is the use of surrogate models instead of FEM. In this paper, the design and optimization of an outer rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor for a hybrid vehicle are investigated. Response surface methodology (RSM) with four input variables is integrated with a sequential quadratic programming algorithm for optimization. Before the optimization, the performance of the surrogate model in the prediction of untried points is validated. Finally, the optimal motor is simulated by FEM to verify the results of RSM-based optimization, and the outputs of both models are compared. 7. Immunocastration in adult boars as a model for late-onset hypogonadismNina Batorek Lukač, Kevin Kress, Marjeta Čandek-Potokar, Gregor Fazarinc, Martin Škrlep, Klavdija Poklukar Žnidaršič, Raffael Wesoly, Volker Stefanski, Milka Vrecl, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background:
While immunocastration has been studied in male pre-pubertal pigs, data on older, sexually mature animals are limited. To understand the physiological effects of androgen deprivation in the late sexual development phase, we compared mature immunocastrated boars (n = 19; average age = 480 days) to young male immunocastrated pigs (n = 6; average age = 183 days) and young entire males (n = 6; average age = 186 days) as positive and negative controls, respectively.
Objectives:
We hypothesized that the timing of gonadotropin-releasing hormone suppression (early or late sexual development phases) influences the extent of reproductive function inhibition, histological structure of testicular tissue, and expression levels of selected genes related to steroid metabolism.
Materials and methods:
Antibody titer, hormonal status, and histomorphometric analysis of testicular tissue were subjected to principal component analysis followed by hierarchical clustering to evaluate the immunocastration effectiveness in mature boars.
Results:
Hierarchical clustering differentiated mature immunocastrated boars clustered with young immunocastrated pigs from those clustered with entire males. Although all mature immunocastrated boars responded to vaccination, as evidenced by the increased gonadotropin-releasing hormone antibody titers (p < 0.001), decreased serum luteinizing hormone concentrations (p = 0.002), and changes in testicular tissue
vascularization (lighter and less red testicular parenchyma; p ≤ 0.001), the responses were variable. Sharp decreases in testes index (p < 0.001), Leydig cell volume density (p < 0.001), Leydig cell nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio (p < 0.001), and testosterone concentration (p < 0.001) were observed in mature immunocastrated boars clustered with young immunocastrated pigs compared with those that clustered with entire males. Additionally, mature immunocastrated boars clustered with young immunocastrated pigs showed lower hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase 7 expression than entire males (p < 0.05). The young immunocastrated pigs group showed higher folliclestimulating hormone receptors than the entire males and mature immunocastrated boars, lower steroidogenic acute regulatory protein expression levels compared with
entire males, and mature immunocastrated boars clustered with entire males (p < 0.01).
Conclusion:
The two-dose vaccination regime resulted in progressive but variable regression of testicular function in adult (post-pubertal) pigs; however, it was insufficient to induce a complete immunocastration response in all animals. 9. Development of an automated measurement system for UWB Radar : master's thesisTomaž Leopold, 2022, magistrsko delo Opis: Ultra-wideband is becoming a key technological element in the consumer industry, providing a safe and reliable way to enable more precise location services as well as secure access to a multitude of systems. Ultra-wideband radar is a subset of that technology, providing not only device-free localization techniques but also complementing expensive medical-level devices or providing means to measure vital signs in a more accessible way. Ultra-wideband radars embedded in smart devices like smartphones can be used for presence detection, gesture recognition, and vital sign monitoring (i.e., breathing detection and heart rate monitoring). Ultra-wideband radar is still in development, and during that process it needs to be well-tested to match the customers’ expectations and standards that apply to the technology. In this master’s thesis, we start by providing a brief overview of ultra-wideband technology. Then we propose and develop an automated measurement system for UWB radar that tests the radio frequency functionality of a radar device, its compliance with standards, frequency regulations, and use-case testing. Performing measurements to test the aforementioned radar devices is a time-consuming and cumbersome task that can be replaced by our developed automated measurement system. We demonstrate the advantages in terms of reduced measurement time and improved test reproducibility, resulting in a well-tested ultra-wideband radar device during the development cycle. 10. H. P. Lovecraft's Symbols of Indifference: A Combined Critical ApproachŠtefan Hadalin, 2021, magistrsko delo Opis: H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is an author who has in the decades since his death survived in the minds of millions of readers, mostly due to the power of his works of weird fiction and the resulting emergence of what he dubbed Cosmic Horror, conveyed through the symbolism and philosophy found in his Cthulhu Mythos. His antiquated style of writing that has since inspired many is at the same time a treasure trove of symbols, which have been interpreted and re-interpreted many times, but mostly as a whole aspect of his writing, with individual symbols not given the attention they deserve. The concepts and themes they convey are largely intertwined in a pattern of meanings and partial overlaps, making them hard to be differentiated fully from one another. However, outside of that, the meanings of the symbols can be established relatively clearly, with some of the main thematic connections between theme and meaning of an individual symbol standing out clearly above other thematic connections.
Since the interpretation of the meaning of a symbol is partially based on the approach used, a combined approach that examines the symbols from the points of view of classic Lovecraftian scholars like S.T. Joshi and David E. Schultz, C.G. Jung’s theories of archetypes and the unconscious, Campbell’s monomyth, and a dose of reader-response style criticism is possible, with the intention of determining the effect of different critical approaches on the meaning of symbols and the thematic connections that are in this process established between both groups. The connections that are established are as interconnected as the themes themselves, but a differentiation between stronger and weaker connections, determining the main thematic connection to the symbol’s meaning is possible. “The Call of Cthulhu” is as the first great story of Lovecraft’s later writing period a useful text, that can be reduced to symbols, a number of which can be used for the purposes of determining the nature of the aforementioned connections.
Lovecraft’s symbols considered as individual elements with a variety of aspects and the interplay between themes and meaning is then another way to study the meanings of the texts as a whole, through the lens of associated meanings determined through differing approaches. The main themes of knowledge and cosmic indifference always shine through, but the meanings of the symbols are built in various ways through various approaches, still arriving at roughly the same thematic connections, which can through the study of this process lead to a different appreciation for the masterful manipulation of stylistic, symbolic and atmospheric elements Lovecraft’s tales represent.
