Open Science Summer School : Maribor, Slovenia, 12.-16. September 2022
2022, druge monografije in druga zaključena dela

Opis: Skills and competencies related to data literacy and data management are indispensable in today’s data-intensive research environment, both in STEM as well as in the humanities and social sciences. In recent years, there has been a significant shift in scientific communication towards open science, and many new approaches, tools and technologies have emerged, enabling a research process that goes beyond the traditional way of research. Open science has the potential to lead researchers to an open, collaborative, transparent, reproducible and, therefore, effective research process. The University of Maribor Summer School offers PhD students and young researchers an opportunity to learn and develop skills in the fields of research data management, open access to research results, the use of open research infrastructure, supercomputing resources and the European Open Science Cloud. With lectures and workshops led by domestic and international experts, the course will provide a deeper understanding of these topics and insight into valuable practical experience.

Handbook for Writing and Editing Texts at the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor
Maja Turnšek, 2021

Opis: The learning process at the faculty requires not only attending lectures and active participation in the tutorials, but also intensive individual work of a student, which is often presented in the form of a seminar paper. However, the most important individual work of a student is definitely a final paper - a diploma or a master's thesis. In order to present and facilitate the preparation of written works for the students of the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor, we have prepared this handbook for writing and editing texts at the faculty. The professional monograph covers the chapters that lead the student through the whole process of research and writing their paper. From the initial search of the research idea and the basics of scientific writing and research in tourism, to the individual steps of the research process and research methods. The professional monograph also includes a chapter on personal relationships, which in particular addresses the relationship between a student and a mentor in the process of preparing the paper or thesis. The handbook also provides practical advice on language and text designing, as well as instructions for citing references. The professional monograph, thus, combines basic information that both students of tourism and their lecturers will use in their study and work processes, as they will follow the uniform guidelines for writing texts in tourism at the Faculty of Tourism.

COLOSS survey: global impact of COVID-19 on bee research
Raffaele Dall’Olio, Tjeerd Blacquiere, Maria Bouga, Robert Brodschneider, Norman L Carreck, Panuwan Chantawannakul, Vincent Dietemann, Lotta Fabricius Kristiansen, Anna M. Gajda, Aleš Gregorc, Asli Ozkirim, Christian Pirk, Victoria Soroker, Geoffrey R. Williams, Peter Neumann, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: The socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 on society have yet to be truly revealed; there is no doubt that the pandemic has severely affected the daily lives of most of humanity. It is to be expected that the research activities of scientists could be impacted to varying degrees, but no data exist on how COVID-19 has affected research specifically. Here, we show that the still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has already diversely and negatively affected bee research at a global level. An online survey disseminated through the global COLOSS honey bee research association showed that every participant (n = 230 from 56 countries) reported an impact on one or more of their activities. Activities that require travelling or the physical presence of people (meetings and conferences, teaching and extension) were affected the most, but also laboratory and field activities, daily operations, supervision and other activities were affected to varying degrees. Since the basic activities are very similar for many research fields, it appears as if our findings for bee research can be extrapolated to other fields. In the light of our data, we recommend that stakeholders such as governments and funding bodies who support research should facilitate the wide implementation of web-based information technology required for efficient online communication for research and education, as well as adequately loosened restriction measures with respect to field and laboratory work. Finally, increased flexibility in administration and extension of research grants and fellowships seem to be needed. It is apparent that adequate responses by all stakeholders are required to limit the impact of COVID-19 and future pandemics on bee science and other research fields.
