Models of social housing in post-war Syria

Opis: abstract Civil war in Syria could be acknowledged as one of the greatest catastrophes of the 21st century, as it had a massive impact, even on a global scale. An abundant number of victims, large cities turned into ruins, 11 million people left without a home, and 5.6 million people who fled the country are just one piece of the Syria problem puzzle. The main issue that we are inquiring into is the housing problem of the people of Syria, especially those with lower social standing, without a home or a safe haven. Culture, tradition, and climate are crucial factors in designing models for residential architecture. These housing models have to be flexible and, with an optimal scale, offer an exceptional value for adjusting according to individual needs. In this thesis we propose a modular system for family houses and residential apartment buildings. In order to meet different needs and to respond to different site conditions in chosen locations, we present different housing models in various shapes, sizes, and functions. These can be implemented in any neighborhood design, which is presented through an example of building and rebuilding in the old city center.

Hungarian challenges of housing block regeneration

Opis: As post-socialist suburbanisation is about to decline, and the buildings of cities start to age rapidly, more and more attention is focused on city rehabilitation in East-Central Europe as well, which will probably be continued in the near future by the rehabilitation of early housing estates. Through an example, the current study shows the challenges such an action faces. Based on the comparison of demands with scenarios that were drawn up from data bases originating from a diverse methodology, it appears that the most reasonable idea would be to generally apply the basic principles of diversification and selecto-concentration, but the uniqueness of individual housing blocks requires that planning is done on an individual basis.

Denitrification of spent regenerated brine using molasses

Opis: Spent BRINE from the regeneration of exhausted resins has to be properly treated before its disposal. The heterotrophic denitrification of regenerated brine was studied in present work. Molasses which served as a carbon source has until now not been applied during brine denitrification. The nitrate and nitrite consumptions were observed according to different ratios between total organic carbon and nitrate (TOC / NO3 ratios) and the influence of NaCl was studied during batch experiments. This work ascertained that molasses is a very good source of carbon, and no addition of other nutrients is necessary. The complete nitrate removal from regenerated brine could be achieved using molasses.

Photoregeneration of trimethylsilyl cellulose as a tool for microstructuring ultrathin cellulose supports

Opis: Microstructured thin films based on cellulose, the most abundant biopolymer on Earth, have been obtained by UV-irradiation of acid-labile trimethylsilyl cellulose thin films in the presence of N-hydroxynaphtalimide triflate as photoacid generator. We demonstrate that this photoregeneration process can be exploited for the manufacture of cellulose patterns having feature sizes down to 1 μm, with potential applications in life sciences.

Platelet-rich plasma, especially when combined with a TGF-ß inhibitor promotes proliferation, viability and myogenic differentiation of myoblasts in vitro

Opis: Regeneration of skeletal muscle after injury is limited by scar formation, slow healing time and a high recurrence rate. A therapy based on platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become a promising lead for tendon and ligament injuries in recent years, however concerns have been raised that PRP-derived TGF-β could contribute to fibrotic remodelling in skeletal muscle after injury. Due to the lack of scientific grounds for a PRP -based muscle regeneration therapy, we have designed a study using human myogenic progenitors and evaluated the potential of PRP alone and in combination with decorin (a TGF-β inhibitor), to alter myoblast proliferation, metabolic activity, cytokine profile and expression of myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs). Advanced imaging multicolor single-cell analysis enabled us to create a valuable picture on the ratio of quiescent, activated and terminally committed myoblasts in treated versus control cell populations. Finally high-resolution confocal microscopy validated the potential of PRP and decorin to stimulate the formation of polynucleated myotubules. PRP was shown to down-regulate fibrotic cytokines, increase cell viability and proliferation, enhance the expression of MRFs, and contribute to a significant myogenic shift during differentiation. When combined with decorin further synergistc effects were identified. These results suggest that PRP could not only prevent fibrosis but could also stimulate muscle commitment, especially when combined with a TGF-β inhibitor.
