1. The analysis of the effects of a fare free public transport travel demand based on e-ticketingDanijel Hojski, David Hazemali, Marjan Lep, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The traditional approach in public transport planning was to collect travel demand data for a more extended period and compose timetables to serve this demand. There are two significant identifiable issues. In the rural areas and off-peak hours, public transport operators provide much more capacities than needed. On the other hand, more capacities than scheduled are needed on certain lines at certain departures on some sporadically occurring occasions. The problem is how to react to short-term changes (daily) triggered by exceptional circumstances and events and midterm changes (weekly, monthly basis) in travel demand. We can trigger changes in travel demand chiefly by introducing a desirable (almost for free) tariff system applied to specific populations. No long-term travel response data exists for this kind of intervention, but an immediate response in public transport supply is needed. In Slovenia, public transport for free for the whole population over 65 years was introduced. With the modern ticketing system, which was designed to be as simple as possible for users (that means "check-in only" at the moment of boarding), the research task was to analyze the travel behavior of the retired population, faced with a new attractive option to travel, based on data of purchased tickets and their afterward validation, for better mid-and long-term planning. Our study finds that ITS technology (in this case, e-ticketing system) can satisfactorily solve the discussed planning and management task. 2. Understanding cognitive transport mode choice structures : means-ends chains as a type of second-order cyberneticsTomaž Kolar, Iztok Kolar, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Purpose: This paper aims to inform the promotion of sustainable modes of transport. For this purpose, it deploys a means-ends framework as a type of second-order cybernetics and uses it to explore cognitive transport mode choice structures.
Design/methodology/approach: The empirical study relies on a purposive sample and a qualitative research methodology known as laddering. It is aimed at the identification and comparative analysis of the cognitive means-ends structures of transport users.
Findings: The results reveal more positive and complex associations for the car than for public transport. Two main positive means-ends structures are identified for public transport, one related with the relaxation and the other with doing useful things while travelling. Dominant positive structures for the car are related with self-confidence, satisfaction and personal freedom. Negative means-ends structures in addition reveal important justifications and rationalizations for car use.
Practical implications: Based on the identified distinct means-ends elements and structures, this study holds important implications for developing a communications strategy and policy interventions seeking to promote public transport.
Originality/value: Means-ends theory is proposed as an integrative cybernetic framework for the study of stakeholders' (customers') mental models. The empirical study is the first to concurrently and comparatively examine positive and negative means-ends chains for the car and for the public transport modes. 3. Problems affecting the accessibility of physicallychallenged individuals to intermediate public transport services in Oyo state, NigeriaJulius Ajayi, Remi Aworemi, Christopher Wojuade, Toyin Adebayo, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The greatest challenge of physically-challenged individuals is mobility, thereby making access to public transportation essential to independent living for these individuals. The study was conducted in Oyo State. Multistage sampling method comprising purposive and simple random sampling was used to select a sample size of 226 students from three special education centres in the state. Findings revealed that factors such as operators’ impatience/discrimination, waiting time and lack of assistance were major problems that affects accessibility to IPTs. Furthermore, results showed that difficulties experienced by the physically-challenged individuals differ significantly by the nature of disability as evidenced by a chi-square value of 37.218, p<0.05. It was therefore recommended that government should listen more to these transport disadvantaged people living with disabilities and integrate their concerns/suggestions in the design, implementation and monitoring of transport infrastructure and services as well as providing sustainable transport means to their transport challenges. 4. Impacts of zero-emission powertrains based on hydrogen technologies in public transportNiko Natek, Boštjan Krajnc, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This article reviews the development potentials and environmental impact of introducing category M3 vehicles (for passenger transport/buses) with fuel cell electric powertrains to an urban and inter-urban public transport service (PTS) to be operated in the Savinjsko-Šaleška region. The main focus is the demonstration of the PTS modelling and preliminary environmental impact assessment of the operation compared to conventional (modern) diesel-powered internal combustion engines. 7. Model approach to quality provision of public passenger transportRoman Krajnc, Drago Sever, 2010, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: Modern approach to transportation system research is based on the system theory. System analysis is relevant. Constant transportation technique and technology development caused by the need of conformation to the new market conditions is the basis for such an approach. The model approach for resolving the problems of public passenger transport is provided in a scientific report. The model of quality of passenger transport comprises the submodels which define relevant measures for the provision of passenger transport quality. The synthesis of sub-model for adoption of quality standards, submodel of passenger demands, submodel of operation safety and security and economic submodel construct the model of quality of public passenger transport (PPT). Its evaluation has been carried out using SWOT analysis.
