Opis: In this diploma work the author deals with describing Mancunian, Cockney and Standard English dialect and the accents of Mancunians, Cockneys and RP. The author presents the main characteristics of each dialect and then compares the three mentioned dialects where the emphasis was on the comparison between Mancunian dialect, Standard dialect and RP accent and between Cockney dialect, Standard dialect and RP accent. The author discusses the differences between the three dialects and the language and dialect differences in general. She also discusses the language and the dialect which tends to be described as ‘wrong’, ‘correct’, ‘ugly’ and so on. The methods that were used in this diploma work are: the descriptive method; the comparative method; the method of analysis and synthesis; the method of abstraction and concretization; the method of generalization and specialization and the historical method. The author found out that there are differences and similarities between all three dialects and that the greater differences are between Mancunian and Cockney dialects on one side and the Standard dialect and RP accent on the other side. She also found that all languages and dialects are equal and that there should be no description of a dialect as ‘ugly’, ‘correct’ etc.

Opis: We are surrounded with different varieties of English language. We listen to English music or radio shows, watch English movies and shows and watch English videos on the internet. The most common varieties that we encounter are British English and American English, which have distinctive differences in stress and pronunciation. Because we encounter both varieties daily, we have found it interesting to see which one prevails in our primary schools. The British English variety is primarily taught in school and the American variety is all around us and is thus more likely to be acquired. Children acquire a foreign language very easily if they are in contact with it on a regular basis. This is as nowadays, as we all hear English lyrics on the radio or hear English conversations on TV. The thesis focuses on the factors that might influence the choice of the English variety. It explores if the input, whether it is pictorial with pictures or textual with words, influences the choice of variety. It also presents connections between the pronunciation of more frequent and less frequent words with choice of variety, the influence of the pupils’ backgrounds, and way of learning English.

Opis: English is a world language. In UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand it is spoken as a first language. There are numerous countries where English is spoken as a second language and in even more countries where English is spoken as a foreign language. Nowadays English is considered to be lingua franca of the world communication. There exist different varieties of English, and Irish English is one of them. English was brought to Ireland by the British in the seventeenth century. Therefore, Irish English is strongly influenced by Irish language which is the first official language in Ireland; English is the second. There are two main varieties of English in Ireland; Northern and Southern variety. Northern variety was historically influenced by the Scots English, and Southern Irish English developed under the influence of English English. Therefore there exist several varieties of pronunciation and differences in vocabulary. Of course, both Irish English varieties differ from British English in vocabulary and pronunciation and that is also emphasized in this graduation thesis.
