Enhancing PLS-SEM-Enabled research with ANN and IPMA : research study of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems’ acceptance based on the technology acceptance model (TAM)

Abstract: PLS-SEM has been used recently more and more often in studies researching critical factors influencing the acceptance and use of information systems, especially when the technology acceptance model (TAM) is implemented. TAM has proved to be the most promising model for researching different viewpoints regarding information technologies, tools/applications, and the acceptance and use of information systems by the employees who act as the end-users in companies. However, the use of advanced PLS-SEM techniques for testing the extended TAM research models for the acceptance of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is scarce. The present research aims to fill this gap and aims to show how PLS-SEM results can be enhanced by advanced techniques: artificial neural network analysis (ANN) and Importance–Performance Matrix Analysis (IPMA). ANN was used in this research study to overcome the limitations of PLS-SEM regarding the linear relationships in the model. IPMA was used in evaluating the importance and performance of factors/drivers in the SEM. From the methodological point of view, results show that the research approach with ANN artificial intelligence complements the results of PLS-SEM while allowing the capture of nonlinear relationships between the variables of the model and the determination of the relative importance of each factor studied. On other hand, IPMA enables the identification of factors with relatively low performance but relatively high importance in shaping dependent variables.

Advanced technologies in logistics engineering : automated storage systems with shuttles integrated with hoisted carriage

Abstract: This paper presents automated storage systems with shuttles integrated with hoisted carriage for successful application in intralogistics. The first part of the paper presents classic and advanced AVS/RS along with specific intralogistics automation systems known as AutoStore from Swisslog and Skypod from Exotec. The second part of the paper focuses on an advanced system with shuttle vehicles capable of serving multiple tiers of the storage rack. An analytical model for the shuttle vehicles capable of serving multiple tiers of the storage rack is presented, which is based on (i) the sequences of acceleration, constant velocity and deceleration, and (ii) randomised assignment policy. Based on the presented model, the expected Single Command (SC) and Dual Command (DC) travel (cycle) time as well as the throughput performance of the shuttle vehicles capable of serving several tiers of warehouse, could be calculated. A programme code in MATLAB has been presented for the computation of throughput performances of automated storage systems with shuttles integrated with hoisted carriage capable of serving several tiers of the storage rack.

A conceptual model of developing an agile work environment

Abstract: This study has highlighted the need for an agile work environment to enhance companies’ performance, growth, and sustainability. In today’s rapidly changing business world, the goal of every individual and team in a company should be to deliver value to customers. The paper highlights theoretical and empirical evidence on the importance of an agile work environment and its positive effect on company performance. In addition, the paper provides insights into the important concept of developing an agile work environment and offers a conceptual model with five selected constructs, which can be leveraged to build an agile mindset in companies. Moving away from traditional leadership models, this paper highlights the significant role that agile leadership can play in enhancing effectiveness and performance, even in long-established large companies. The empirical research was based on 468 randomly selected medium and large Slovenian companies. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the model. The empirical results show that changing and adaptive agile companies are the ones that thrive more easily in an environment that is unpredictable and characterized by rapid change.

Simulation model for robotic pick-point evaluation for 2-F robotic gripper

Abstract: Robotic bin-picking performance has been gaining attention in recent years with the development of increasingly advanced camera and machine vision systems, collaborative and industrial robots, and sophisticated robotic grippers. In the random bin-picking process, the wide variety of objects in terms of shape, weight, and surface require complex solutions for the objects to be reliably picked. The challenging part of robotic bin-picking is to determine object pick-points correctly. This paper presents a simulation model based on ADAMS/MATLAB cosimulation for robotic pick-point evaluation for a 2-F robotic gripper. It consists of a mechanical model constructed in ADAMS/View, MATLAB/Simulink force controller, several support functions, and the graphical user interface developed in MATLAB/App Designer. Its functionality can serve three different applications, such as: (1) determining the optimal pick-points of the object due to object complexity, (2) selecting the most appropriate robotic gripper, and (3) improving the existing configuration of the robotic gripper (finger width, depth, shape, stroke width, etc.). Additionally, based on this analysis, new variants of robotic grippers can be proposed. The simulation model has been verified on a selected object on a sample 2-F parallel robotic gripper, showing promising results, where up to 75% of pick-points were correctly determined in the initial testing phase.

K-vertex: a novel model for the cardinality constraints enforcement in graph databases : doctoral dissertation

Abstract: The increasing number of network-shaped domains calls for the use of graph database technology, where there are continuous efforts to develop mechanisms to address domain challenges. Relationships as 'first-class citizens' in graph databases can play an important role in studying the structural and behavioural characteristics of the domain. In this dissertation, we focus on studying the cardinality constraints mechanism, which also exploits the edges of the underlying property graph. The results of our literature review indicate an obvious research gap when it comes to concepts and approaches for specifying and representing complex cardinality constraints for graph databases validated in practice. To address this gap, we present a novel and comprehensive approach called the k-vertex cardinality constraints model for enforcing higher-order cardinality constraints rules on edges, which capture domain-related business rules of varying complexity. In our formal k-vertex cardinality constraint concept definition, we go beyond simple patterns formed between two nodes and employ more complex structures such as hypernodes, which consist of nodes connected by edges. We formally introduce the concept of k-vertex cardinality constraints and their properties as well as the property graph-based model used for their representation. Our k-vertex model includes the k-vertex cardinality constraint specification by following a pre-defined syntax followed by a visual representation through a property graph-based data model and a set of algorithms for the implementation of basic operations relevant for working with k-vertex cardinality constraints. In the practical part of the dissertation, we evaluate the applicability of the k-vertex model on use cases by carrying two separate case studies where we present how the model can be implemented on fraud detection and data classification use cases. We build a set of relevant k-vertex cardinality constraints based on real data and explain how each step of our approach is to be done. The results obtained from the case studies prove that the k-vertex model is entirely suitable to represent complex business rules as cardinality constraints and can be used to enforce these cardinality constraints in real-world business scenarios. Next, we analyze the performance efficiency of our model on inserting new edges into graph databases with varying number of edges and outgoing node degree and compare it against the case when there is no cardinality constraints checking. The results of the statistical analysis confirm a stable performance of the k-vertex model on varying datasets when compared against a case with no cardinality constraints checking. The k-vertex model shows no significant performance effect on property graphs with varying complexity and it is able to serve as a cardinality constraints enforcement mechanism without large effects on the database performance.

Production control of a polymerization plant based on production performance indicators

Abstract: The specifics of process manufacturing have a great influence on production management. The focus of process-production control is to maintain stable and cost-effective production within given constraints. The synthesis of production-control structures is thus recognized as one of the most important design problems in process-production management. This article proposes a closed-loop control structure with the utilization of production-performance indicators (pPIs) as a possible solution to this problem. Suggested concept takes into account also economic issues of production. pPIs represent the translation of operating objectives, such as the minimization of production costs, to a reduced set of control variables that can then be used in a feedback control. The idea of production-feedback control using production pPIs as controlled variables was implemented on a procedural model of a production process for a polymerization plant. Preliminary results demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed methodology. At the implementation stage we must be aware that appropriate IT system has to be available which ensures needed online production data.

Managerial coaching model and the impact of its activities on employee satisfaction and company performance

Abstract: The article tries to answer the research question: What is the potential additive effect on employee satisfaction and overall company performance when using managerial coaching model and its activities? The purpose of the article has been to form a model of managerial coaching and of the influence of its activities on employee satisfaction and overall company performance based on theory review and field study results. We have confirmed the two main hypotheses and all the secondary hypotheses with two empirical studies, one focused on the managers and the other on the employees. The topic is of practical value and it will help managers in Slovenia and abroad to understand the effect of the activities of coaching on employee satisfaction and overall company performance.

Impact of balanced organizational values on business performance

Abstract: Theories of organization and management have offered several concepts and models indicating that organizational values are an important factor in running organizations. A still unexplained question concerns the creation of balanced organizational values which can support the achievement of diversified and even seemingly incompatible goals of today's organizations. To explore balanced organizational values in contemporary business practice, we tested two most frequently used value models, i.e., the Competing Values Framework and Schwartz’s values model, on the sample of the Fortune 100 companies. This dissertation proposes a new model of balanced organizational values named Mission-based model of organizational values which proved itself to be more appropriate for researching balanced values in contemporary business practice than the two most frequently used value models (the Competing Values Framework and Schwartz’s values model), thus supporting the first hypothesis of this dissertation. Given the particularities of balanced organizational values research, an instrument for measuring organizational values was developed to suit the specific needs of this research. In order to test the research hypotheses, a research in 24 Croatian companies was conducted. In each of these companies, between 27 and 50 employees were surveyed giving a total sample size of 874 respondents. The results of statistical analysis performed to test the second hypothesis, as well as the related sub-hypotheses, indicate that the degree of imbalance of organizational values has no significant effect on the higher level of organizational commitment. The same applies to the two separate components of organizational commitment—affective and normative. However, the existence of medium-sized negative correlation between the degree of imbalance of organizational values and continuance component of organizational commitment was determined. The testing results of the third hypothesis, as well as the related sub-hypotheses, indicate that organizations with balanced organizational values are, in general, more effective than organizations with imbalanced values. Moreover, this correlation was found not only for the overall level of organizational effectiveness, but also for the most perspectives of organizational effectiveness based on the Balanced Scorecard approach. To conclude, this dissertation contributes to a better understanding of the role of organizational values in business, especially emphasizing the importance and role of balanced organizational values. Mission-based model of organizational values, developed within this dissertation, follows the findings of the most used models, integrating and upgrading them with new cognitions based on selected scientific knowledge and experience from business practice. And most importantly, this dissertation presents an empirical confirmation of the importance of balancing organizational values as one of the preconditions for successful business.
