Lessons from remarkable fintech companies for the financial inclusion in Peru
Patricia Vilcanqui Velásquez, Vito Bobek, Romana Korez-Vide, Tatjana Horvat, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Financial inclusion, defined as the adequate access and usage of formal financial services to improve people’s lives, is a crucial area for the economic development of a country through its various angles. This paper analyzes the impact of selected FinTech companies on financial inclusion in their respective countries to obtain lessons of their business models and country environments that can help Peruvian financial inclusion. The selected FinTechs are M-PESA in Kenya, Nubank in Brazil, GCASH in the Philippines, and Easypaisa in Pakistan, which revolutionized the financial sector in their respective countries. However, a comparative study of their impact on financial inclusion in their respective country has not been conducted yet; therefore, the lessons obtained are helpful for the Peruvian situation due to their practical implications and because they raise possible areas for further and deeper research. The approach of this study considered a qualitative and quantitative method (to find a Pearson correlation between the percentage of the population of Country (A) that are users of FinTech (a) and the six selected demand-side indicators per country retrieved from the Global Findex Database) analysis to understand the results obtained. The results obtained indicate that M-PESA and GCASH, companies specialized in providing basic mobile money transactions such as remittances and withdrawals, did not impact the provision of other financial services such as savings or credit cards. In Easypaisa’s case, this company positively impacts the studied indicators, probably due to its original partnership with a microfinance institution. Regarding Nubank, despite its remarkable growth in the last years, the company does not affect financial inclusion in Brazil yet. Nonetheless, after its recent expansion to provide more financial services, future research could assess the impact of this company on Brazilian financial inclusion.

Crime as a business, business as a crime
Josip Kregar, Antonija Petričušić, 2010, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: This paper endorses the claim that in transitional societies the line between business and crime is elusive because weak states foster a legal order that is formalistic, bureaucratic, politically biased and prone to corruption. Design/Methods/Approach: Three elements are discussed in the paper. First, the paper briefly analyses legal and institutional state of affairs in transitional Western Balkans societies that condone organised crime. Secondly, it investigates the phenomenology of the (corruptive) crime behaviour, explaining how it managed to integrate into society in the context of a weak state. Thirdly, the paper investigates why state policies and measures fail to fight crime as the business. In this part the paper contests a traditional definition of criminal organisation as a hierarchical one, claiming that mafias are not organizations in a traditional sense. Findings: The paper emphasizes that the fight against organised crime is not just a fight against individuals or individual criminal behaviour; but a fight to increase the efficiency of the government. The paper furthermore asserts that better understand of the organised crime problem can occur only if its fighting and addressing happens from the point of view of a good governance. Namely, the precondition to fight against organised crime or parallel activity requires increased efficiency and capacity of governmental institutions. Originality/Value: This paper adds to the academic and practical understanding of the organised crime in the post-transitional settings. Apart from being instructive and up-todated source of information for the regional setting it deals with, the paper sheds a new light on understanding of organised crime.

The significance of studying and investigation art crime : old reasons, new world
Bojan Dobovšek, Boštjan Slak, 2011, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the basic importance of studying and investigating art crime. Design/Methods/Approach: This paper presents a literature review with new commentary. Findings: Art crime has a long history and there has been some good research done on the topic. However it is still unrecognised in broader circles, even among professionals, and only a portion of the importance of art crime has been studied, often without a strong analysis of the complexities of the field. This paper will seek to fill in some of the gaps in scholarship, while summarizing much of the available literature. Research limitations/implications: A lack of proper and comprehensive academic literature limits the extent of this study, but this is the very reason why this paper is important. Practical implications: This paper represents a summary of the significance of art crime studies and investigation. Originality/Value: The main value is to those who are not yet familiar with art crime. This paper will further bring in some new views to complement the existing scholarship, and will be of interest to those who are keen on knowing about art crime.

Conceptual framework for the definition and regulation of virtual currencies : international and Russian practices
Olga Belomyttseva, 2015, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper analyzes possible definitions of virtual currencies in legislation and economics. Views of the European Central Bank, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and Financial Action Task Force regarding virtual currencies are studied. The analysis also covers the draft legislation to ban money surrogates in the Russian Federation. The author suggests two reasonable approaches to defining virtual currencies in law and economics. The Austrian School representatives’ arguments on the existence of private money are reviewed. The author proposes the introduction of some changes in the legislation of the Russian Federation in order to give legal status to virtual currencies.

The importance of using discounted cash flow methodology in techno-economic analyses of energy and chemical production plants
Zorka Novak-Pintarič, Zdravko Kravanja, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper demonstrates the correct application of discounted cash flow methodology for evaluating and designing energy and chemical production plants. Such processes usually correspond to capital intensive long-term projects. Simple economic criteria, like the profit or production cost are insufficient for this type of decision making because they do not take into account the time value of money and underestimate the profitabilities of the evaluated plants. This paper shows that some of those criteria based on the discounted cash flows establish suitable compromises between long-term cash flow generation and profitability. As several alternative options are usually evaluated in parallel, it is shown how to rank mutually exclusive alternatives properly and how to select the best option from among them. Two large-scale case studies demonstrate that using discounted cash flow methodology can result in substantially different decisions than non-discounted criteria, however, these decisions are affected by several input parameters.

Re-examination of the purchasing power parity in Central and Eastern European economies
Ahmad Zubaidi Baharumshah, Jani Bekő, Darja Boršič, 2011, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: The empirical record on PPP tests for transition economies is far from being so opulent as it is for the developed market economies. This paper attempts to fill this gap by scrutinizing the theory of PPP on a sample of Central and Eastern European economies. The paper has two main advances with respect to previous PPP studies. First, it employs a monthly data base on real exchange rates for a panel of 12 Central and Eastern European economies by testing the theory separately with respect to US dollar and with respect to Euro. Second, we utilise a panel unit root test that involves the estimation of the ADF regression in a SUR framework. Since our study found support for the validity of PPP in some reforming European economies, special attention should be devoted to individual country-specific factors that cause PPP deviations.
