Text analysis with sequence matching

Opis: This article describes some common problems faced in natural language processing. The main problem consist of a user given sentence, which has to be matched against an existing knowledge base, consisting of semantically described words or phrases. Some main problems in this process are outlined and the most common solutions used in natural language processing are overviewed. A sequence matching algorithm is introduced as an alternative solution and its advantages over the existing approaches are explained. The algorithm is explained in detail where the longest subsequences discovery algorithm is explained first. Then the major components of the similarity measure are defined and the computation of concurrence and dispersion measure is presented. Results of the algorithms performance on a test set are then shown and different implementations of algorithm usage are discussed. The work is concluded with some ideas for the future and some examples where our approach can be practically used.

Fast convex layers algorithm for near-duplicate image detection

Opis: This paper builds on a novel, fast algorithm for generating the convex layers on grid points with linear time complexity. Convex layers are extracted from the binary image. The obtained convex hulls are characterized by the number oftheir vertices and used as representative image features. A computational geometric approach to near-duplicate image detection stems from these features. Similarity of feature vectors of given images is assessed by correlation coefficient. This way, all images with closely related structure and contents can be retrieved from large databases of images quickly and efficiently. The algorithm can be used in various applications such as video surveillance, image and video duplication search, or image alignment. Our approach is rather robust up to moderate signal-to-noise ratios, tolerates lossy image compression, and copes with translated, rotated and scaled image contents.

Evolutionarily distinctive species often capture more phylogenetic diversity than expected

Opis: Evolucijska posebnost meri, koliko se določena vrsta evolucijsko razlikuje v svoji filogenetski veji. Nedavno so bile za določanje prioritet pri ohranjanju biotske raznolikosti predlagane mere, ki so eksplicitno vključujejo časovno komponento. Vendar ugotavljamo, da se takšne mere kakovostno razlikujejo glede na to, kako dobro zaobjamejo skupno evolucijo (poimenovano kot filogenetsko raznolikost), ki jo predstavlja izbrana množica vrst. S pomočjo simulacij in preproste teorije grafov smo raziskali ta odnos glede na obliko filogenetskega drevesa. Pokazali smo, da mere posebnosti zaobjamejo več filogenetske raznolikosti na neuravnoteženih drevesih in na drevesih z veliko cepitvami blizu sedanjosti. Vrstni red glede na mero posebnosti je bil robusten neodvisno od oblike dreves, pri čemer so se proporcionalne mere obnašale bolje od mer, osnovanih na vozlišcih dreves. Enak vzorec se je izkazal na primeru 50 ultrametričnih dreves iz literature. Tako lahko zaključimo, da so mere posebnosti lahko koristen dodatni indikator pri določanju prioritet ohranjanja vrst. Najenostavnejša mera, starost vrste, se v tem kontekstu izkaže presenetljivo dobro, kar nakazuje da nove mere, ki se osredotočijo na obliko drevesa pri konicah, lahko zagotovijo transparentno alternativo za bolj zapletene pristope, ki obravnavajo polna drevesa.

Optimization of a call centre performance using the stochastic queueing models

Opis: Background: A call centre usually represents the first contact of a customer with a given company. Therefore, the quality of its service is of key importance. An essential factor of the call centre optimization is the determination of the proper number of operators considering the selected performance measure. Results of previous research show that this can be done using the queueing theory approach. Objectives: The paper presents the practical application of the stochastic queueing models aimed at optimizing a Slovenian telecommunication provider’s call centre. Methods/Approach: The arrival and the service patterns were analysed, and it was concluded that the call centre under consideration can be described using the M/M/r {infinity/infinity/FIFO} queueing model. Results: An appropriate number of operators were determined for different peak periods of the working day, taking into consideration the following four performance measures: the expected waiting time, the expected number of waiting customers, the probability that a calling customer will have to wait, and the call centre service level. Conclusions: The obtained results prove the usefulness and applicability of the queueing models as a tool for a call centre performance optimization. In practice, all the data needed for such a mathematical analysis are usually provided. This paper is aimed at illustrating how such data can be efficiently exploited.

Abolition of exequatur in Brussels Ia regulation

Opis: This article will analyse and evaluate if and to what extent enforcement of judgments according to the Brussels Ia Regulation may be challenging for Croatian judges. It seeks to answer the questions a) which novelties in terms of recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments are introduced through the system of cross-border enforcement of judgments under Brussels Ia and b) with regard to the lack of implementation provisions in Croatian legal system, how will a new “adaptation device” according to Art. 54 of the Brussels operate. In particular, how and by whom will the adaptation of measure or order be carried out and how will it be challenged pursuant to Art. 54 (2) of the Brussels Ia Regulation. In a search for possible answers, approaches as well as solutions adopted in the legal systems of some Member States will also be taken into account. Considerations which can be attributed to the lack of provisions regarding implementation of the Brussels Ia Regulation in Croatian legal system will be highlighted.
