Sustainability orientation and focus in logistics and supply chains
Sebastjan Lazar, Dorota Klimecka-Tatar, Matevž Obrecht, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Sustainable development, logistics, and supply chain are being combined into three increasingly connected and topical global research areas. Therefore, this paper's novelty identifies and defines the priorities of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and sustainable development dimensions in supply-chain- and logistics-management-related studies in the last decade. Knowing logistics and supply chain sustainability focus and orientation is valuable information for researchers and managers to adapt and mitigate their business logistics according to the forecasted trends. The paper provides a systematic and comprehensive review of the literature and is based on 116 scientific papers published between 2010 and 2020 in 73 international journals in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The study defines focus with integrating environmental, social, and economic sustainability for logistics- and supply-chain-related studies. It emphasizes primary and secondary links of investigated studies with 17 United Nations sustainable development goals. The bibliometric analysis also examined keyword relations. One of the main contributions is that economic sustainability was identified as the most represented one-dimensional sustainability focus. It was revealed that supply chain studies integrated all three sustainability dimensions more frequently (50.60%) than logistics studies, which were equally related to studying two- or three-dimensions of sustainability (39.39%). The most significant findings are also that studies were identified to be oriented primarily towards "responsible consumption and production", "industry, innovation, and infrastructure" and "affordable and clean energy" and secondary especially on "sustainable cities and communities".

Drone last mile delivery : an assessment of the viable market and security potential of drone delivery
Igor Grofelnik, Uroš Godnov, Marjan Sternad, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: the paper includes a review of the literature in the field of drones, drone technology, possible implementation in the field of the last mile concept, legislation, suitability of technology in the field of security, weather conditions, social acceptance and later focuses on checking the possible implementation of drones according to the set parameters. Methodology: for the purposes of research and obtaining answers to the posed research question and hypotheses, we used the method of literature review in the selected field, panel data analysis, conducted interviews with experts in the field of delivery drones in the Republic of Slovenia, and conducted secondary research. Results: the results show an assessment of the possible implementation of drones based on the analysis of the obtained data and interviews. We determined a realistic assessment of the potential of delivery drones, in which we included several vital aspects necessary for implementation. Conclusion: it was found that the current technology is not yet fully adequate, and significant technological improvements are also needed. It is also necessary to plan integrated urban spatial solutions that will enable safe and efficient delivery in the supply chain. Namely, delivery with drones is currently ineffective due to flight safety, harmful sound emissions and the inability to fly in bad weather conditions. Based on a literature review and a survey among large logistics companies, it was found that there are still many barriers to implementation due to legal norms and regulations, which are currently very constructive. It is unlikely, however, that parcel delivery will take off in an urban environment soon, as there are still many unknowns. With proper planning and use of suburban consolidation centres, e-vans, e-cars and bicycles are currently economically viable for last mile delivery.

Dynamic discrete inventory control model with deterministic and stochastic demand in pharmaceutical distribution
Slobodan Antić, Lena Djordjevic Milutinovic, Andrej Lisec, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents an inventory control problem in a private pharmaceutical distribution company from the Republic of Serbia. The company realizes that distribution within nine neighbouring countries and inventory control in the pharmaceutical supply chain is centralized. In order to constitute a conceptual model of the problem, we propose the modern control theory concept. The conceptual model is based on the specific practical assumptions and constraints of the supply chain. Thereafter, a dynamic discrete mathematical model of inventory control is formulated to reflect elements of the system and their relations. The model considers multiple pharmaceutical products, variable lead time, realized stochastics and deterministic demand, and different ordering policies (Lot for Lot and Fixed Order Quantity). Deterministic demand is represented as a sales forecast for each product per month, while stochastic demand is generated as a random variation of sales forecast in a range of ±20%. Two objective functions are defined as the maximization of the difference between planned average inventory level and realized average inventory level, and the minimization of stock-out situations. We develop a procedure for the determination of reorder points and the number of deliveries to achieve proposed objective functions. The model overcomes shortages of theoretically-based distribution requirements planning models and offers solutions to the limitations in inventory control practice. Real-life data, collected over two years, are used for the validation of the proposed model and the solution procedure. Numerical examples illustrate the model application and behaviour.

Sustainability topics integration in supply chain and logistics higher education : where is the Middle East?
Maja Rosi, Matevž Obrecht, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The global logistics industry has grown significantly in the last decade and has become essential to global business activities. In addition, the logistics industry is vital in transportation, urbanization in the Middle East, and transshipment through the Middle East. Due to their increasing importance and size, there is an increasing demand for adequately qualified people capable of managing the logistics systems and supply chains holistically and sustainably to avoid problems caused by unsustainable practices in mobility, transport, and supply chains. However, it is unclear whether the logistic and supply chain education of future leaders, managers, and engineers will follow SDG goals, the rise of new trends, and green technologies or lag behind. This paper pioneered a systematic approach and analyzed Middle Eastern countries regarding their sustainability integration into higher education programs related to supply chain management and logistics studies. It revealed enormous differences among countries and a lack of sustainability topics in most studied countries. Some countries are also significantly more oriented toward partial logistics challenges such as transport efficiency instead of sustainable supply chains, which are becoming critical challenges for the near future and must be accompanied by formal and life-long learning on sustainability-related topics. The circular economy and corporate social responsibility are especially neglected. It was also revealed that sustainability integration in higher education does not correlate with sustainability scores and the ranking of countries within the sustainability index.

Measuring sustainability in supply chains : comparative study of 15 top logistic companies operating in Slovenia
Petra Serdinšek, Lara Sladič, Matevž Obrecht, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Our research work refers to measuring sustainability in supply chains. First of all we will touch the topic, what means measuring sustainability in supply chain and how it can be measured. We will focus on our research area of fifteen companies, where we will investigate how much Slovenian companies deal with sustainability in their companies, how much sustainability means to them and how they measure it, if their company contributes a lot to the sustainability of supply chain or to the sustainable operation of the whole company. In recent years, have the supply chains undergone significant changes as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, which has forced companies to change the way of their operating in order to make their supply chains more efficient. The COVID-19 crisis has therefore made companies realize that they need to move to a circular economy, as it has shown the disruption or vulnerability of current supply chains. About sustainability is more and more speech and also more and more companies are recognizing its importance, because sustainable supply chain affects to the entire production process, from the sourcing of raw materials to the recycling of products or raw materials, if this is possible. A sustainable supply chain increases a company’s competitiveness and also reduces costs for the company.

Milena Kajba, Borut Jereb, Matevž Obrecht, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Supply chain disruptions and challenges have and will always exist, but preparing in advance and improving resilience for the upcoming consequences should be the utmost important goal. This paper explores trends that affect innovation in the technological sphere of supply chain systems. More precisely, the research is focused on Digital Twin technology applicability through other logistics IT trends and aims to research the pressing issue of ensuring the visibility and resilience of future supply chain systems. The paper’s objective is to produce a conceptual model enabling the investment assessment of the necessary IT resources. Initially, a theoretical confirmation of logistics IT trends’ relevance to supply chain systems was established. After, propositions of Digital Twin technology applications to other logistics IT trends were made, which were divided into corresponding constant multitudes of supply chain systems. Lastly, the conceptual model for the investment assessment of the necessary IT resources was derived in the form of a matrix. It considers 16 parameters for investment assessment and applicability to all companies, regardless of their specifics. It also supports the notion of digital IT competencies’ fundamental importance to the continuous operation of supply chain systems.
