Opis: The present thesis is based on the use of medical acronyms and initialisms in the American TV series House MD as compared to that of medical doctors in Slovenia. The main aim is to determine which medical acronyms are most frequently used in the series and whether they coincide with the acronyms that Slovene doctors use in their work. The second aim is to establish the prevalent language of origin for medical acronyms and initialisms. The theoretical part of the thesis begins with a brief history of acronyms and initialisms, followed by a list of word-formation processes, pronunciation issues and the use of articles with acronyms. The practical part is divided into two sections. The first section covers the transcriptions of the second season of House MD with its twenty-four episodes, where every episode is accompanied by a short data analysis that presents all the medical acronyms featured in the episode. The analysis also includes information as to whether the acronyms are explained in the course of the show, and who uses them (medical or non-medical staff). The second section features four interviews with Slovene doctors from various medical fields (from emergency doctors, physiatrist to veterinarian). The interviews were conducted in Slovene, but the English translations are provided as well for foreign readers. The main focus of the thesis is on determining which medical acronyms are most commonly used, which are loanwords, and the impact of social status on the use of acronyms in speech.

Opis: The paper discusses Slovene-English language contact in general and English loanwords in Slovene in particular. The focus is on recent loanwords, where a great deal of variability in their pronunciation and spelling can be observed depending on the time of their borrowing, the channel of transmission (oral or written) and the degree of their linguistic and social integration into Slovene. Sociolinguistic variables such as the age and education of the users play a role as well, as do the differences between the phonological and orthographic systems of the two languages. In addition to phonological, morphological and orthographic aspects of English loanwords, their meaning and its occasional adaptations and modifications will be addressed. Data for illustration purposes will be taken primarily from the media, especially electronic ones (blogs, forums), since this is the field in which various forms of loanwords feature most frequently.

Opis: The thesis deals with English loanwords in Slovene teen magazines from the year 1991 until 2015. English, as an international language, has had a great influence on Slovene for decades. Native speakers of Slovene use English in their everyday life and in different situations: at work, in informal conversations, in magazines, and in books. In the theoretical part, the main objectives were to present different views on borrowing and describe the process of borrowing. When a word is borrowed from the donor language by the receiving language, it may undergo various changes. Native speakers of Slovene borrow a word from an English model (a borrowing word) which gradually changes into a replica (a borrowed word). The phonological, morphological and semantic adaptation is described. I provided the differences between older loanwords, that have been part of the Slovene lexicon for decades, and recent loanwords. Older loanwords follow the morphological rules of Slovene while recent loanwords often keep their original form. Furthermore, various reasons for borrowing a word from the donor by the receiving language are presented. In the empirical part of my thesis, English loanwords found in the magazines were analyzed morphologically and semantically. I provided the reasons for the extensive use of loanwords in the magazines which are written for and dedicated to teenagers. Finally, I determine why an author of a certain article prefers to use English loanwords instead of Slovene equivalents. In the last part of my thesis, the findings and conclusions are presented.
