Opis: The aim of this diploma paper was to determine whether different advertising slogans share the same language characteristics, first on the level of individual theme groups and within the individual criteria and then on the level of all analysed slogans. Research sample included 125 randomly chosen advertising slogans which were then classified into five theme groups each one having 25 slogans.. These theme groups were then analysed according to the following criteria: type of clauses, personal pronouns and possessive determiners, forms of figurative language and sound devices, number of words in slogans, and frequently used words. The analysis has shown that advertising slogans do share certain characteristics. These characteristics included the domination of two types of clauses and of personal pronoun you and possessive determiner yours. The majority of analysed slogans was also formed with forms of figurative language and sound devices and did not exceed five words in a slogan. Frequently used words were found mostly on the level of individual theme groups and not that often on the level of all analysed slogans, with the exception of the verb to be and the adjective good with their forms.

Translation of Characteristics of African American Vernacular English in Kathryn Stockett´s Novel The Help

Opis: The thesis is an overall view over translation of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in the novel The Help by an American author Kathryn Stockett and in the translation Služkinje by Dušanka Zabukovec. Main purposes of the thesis are to present literary translation, standard and non-standard language, introduce dialect, sociolect and idiolect and the translation of those lects; introduce AAVE: its socio-linguistic context and its origin, AAVE in literature and its general characteristics; get familiarized with the American author Kathryn Stockett and her work The Help and the translator Dušanka Zabukovec with the translation Služkinje; furthermore, introduce socio-historical setting of the original novel, plot summary, main themes and language in the novel. Purposes of the second part of the thesis are to introduce the methodology for observation of translation and present the comprehensive analysis of translation of characteristics of AAVE in the original and translated text; and explore, define and support as many examples of characteristics of AAVE as possible. The analysis performed in this thesis has shown that characteristics of AAVE from the original novel are not maintained in the translation and that emotional and psychological reaction of an American reader and a Slovene reader are not the same, since language – AAVE – plays a significant role in the original text. The last part of the thesis presents some solutions and suggestions to maintain or, at least, show the existence of characteristics of AAVE in the Slovene novel Služkinje.

Opis: English is the most widely spread language of today's world. Its functions exceed the ones of a lingua franca, as it is not used only for the purpose of international communication, but is also more and more widely used within non-English-speaking countries in different domains. Thus English exerts a great influence on other languages, their lexis, syntax, orthography and cultural aspect. All this brings up certain attitudes towards the language. Language attitudes are opinions, ways of thinking, feeling and reacting toward a language or its speakers, and can significantly affect people’s behaviour. The purpose of this paper was to research the attitudes of three different age groups of Slovene speakers toward English. In the theoretical part the theory behind language attitudes, the current status of English and its presence in Slovenia are presented. In the empirical part the results of the questionnaire, which was filled out by four different groups – the 8th grade pupils, the students of English, the students of other study programmes and the adult learners of English – three age groups in total, are analysed and interpreted.

Language evolution from the cultural aspect

Opis: Language is the primary force of human social life. It is the most important characteristic that separates humans from animals. The question of language evolution has not yet been completely answered, despite several theories dealing with this subject. In my graduation thesis I deal with language evolution from the cultural aspect. First I present the process of evolution, focusing on cultural evolution – the transfer of cultural patterns in social community. I deal with different language definitions, presented by Sverker Johansson, and the reasons for its evolution. The chapter on language definitions is completed by presenting the cradle of language, which is Africa. When focusing on language evolution from the cultural aspect, it is necessary to present the theory of cultural transmission by Michael Tomasello. He believed that this is the only biological mechanism that could have caused changes in cognition and behaviour. Finally, I present the question of inseparability of language and culture.

Opis: Abstract: In English language there are more idioms "than you can shake a stick at". Idiomatic expressions can also be found in song lyrics. For foreign listener such idioms are hard to interpret, so I decided to focus my research on the idioms found in popular music. I collected 90 idioms out of 30 most popular songs. The idioms are interpreted and origin of each idiom is examined.

Opis: English is the lingua franca of the world and it is as such affecting many languages; Slovene is no exception to this process. In the indirect contact between English and Slovene, the former is affecting the later in different areas, but the most receptive are the areas of media and the spoken discourse of young people. In the language of conversation of high school students in Slovenia, English is mostly used to fill lexical gaps, but lately it is also used in cases where there already exists a Slovene equivalent. This is a consequence of an increased influence of English on Slovene. There are some English words and phrases that are used by high school students independently of the fact where these students live, and there are some words and phrases that vary from city to city. Students of three different cities (Ljubljana, Maribor, and Murska Sobota) were included in the research sample. The purpose of this diploma paper was to find out the degree of students’ awareness of English influence on Slovene, to find the differences in the use of English among students living in different cities and to determine words and phrases that are most commonly used in the language of conversation of young people in Slovenia.

Accessible Web for Deaf and Hard of Hearing with Transparent Multimodal Sign Language Interpreter Module

Opis: World Wide Web is becoming increasingly necessary for everybody regardless of age, gender, culture, health and individual disabilities. Unfortunately, the information on the Web is still not accessible to deaf and hard of hearing Web users since these people require translations of written forms into their first language: sign language, which is based on facial expressions, hands and body movements and has its own linguistic structure. This thesis introduces a possible solution (method) for providing accessible information to the deaf and hard of hearing on the Web. The Sign Language Interpreter Module (SLI Module) method combines three different types of modalities: visual, auditory and kinesthetic. The visual modality is represented by the video of a sign language interpreter with the addition of subtitles. The auditory modality is reflected as speech and the kinesthetic modality is defined as user interaction; activating sign language videos on demand. In comparison to previous technological Web solutions, the innovation of the proposed SLI Module method is that it envelops various modalities for delivering written information. The presentation of this information as sign language videos with subtitles can be easily integrated into original Web sites, while fully preserving the layout's structure. This is possible due to the use of Web specifications such as HTML for layout presentation and the ubiquitous use of JavaScript scripting language for interaction. In addition, the method uses external W3C Timed Text format for subtitling. The analysis of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 recommendations showed that these recommendations are still too general and inadequate for deaf people who use sign language as their first language. For this reason, the thesis argues that the main problem of the Web accessibility guidelines is that they focus mainly on functionalities instead of user experience. In the thesis, the reasons for selecting sign language videos over synthetic signing, such as avatars, are addressed. The process of producing sign language videos is described in depth. The thesis analyses present Web dictionaries on the Web and introduces motivations factors and development of a Web glossary on demand (SLI Glossary) using the SLI Module method. Additionally, this approach can be used for monitoring Web users‟ activities and can also be used as an indicator for further sign language videos recordings. The SLI Glossary method does not represent a text-to-sign-language automatic translator, but a way to enable single word sign language translations to original Web sites. Based on the experience obtained from the evaluation studies, the SLI Module method is gaining wide acceptance within the Deaf community as it assists them to get the written form of information by using a multimodal information retrieval. Finally, the SLI Module follows worldwide declarations and legislations regarding human rights on equal access to information, since it facilitates sign language as a primary communication channel. The goal of the thesis is also to start an initiative for Slovenian sign language recognition and increase people's awareness about its usage.

Opis: In my diploma paper I write about reading the novel in a foreign language, that is English in this case, and acquiring vocabulary from it. The novel is The Railway Children written by Edith Nesbit. The paper is about reading as a process, reading as a skill, reading strategies and styles, reading techniques, problems and difficulties that learners have to deal with when reading. I also studied learning vocabulary and learning vocabulary from the novel. I mentioned anticipated problems and experience from my teaching practice. I chose this subject because I teach in a primary school where the learners in the ninth grade attend the English competition every year and this is the literary work they have to read for it. They have to deal with formal language, spoken language and direct speech which is written phonetically. There are also old-fashioned expressions and phrases that had to be interpreted.

Opis: Throughout the history German language has been influenced by many different languages; today its vocabulary contains words from Latin, French, Italian and what interests me most in my diploma paper – from English. Some words have been a part of the German language for decades – those are loan words. But then again other words would keep their original spelling and pronunciation and those words remained foreign words. What interests me is the term Germlish, which is a combination of English and German language, spoken whether by foreigners trying to speak German, or by the Germans using English expressions excessively. In my diploma paper I focused on the latter version of it: I tried to find out how the Germans accept Germlish. On one hand there are some linguists, critics and organizations, who claim Germlish is a corruption of both languages involved, still others claim Germlish is a way to a common language all over the world. Considering that English is a dominating language, I wanted to know how different fields of German language are influenced by it. I dealt with the word-formation of the language of German youth, economics language and computer language. The word-formational aspects are presented in the theoretical part and in empirical part the anglicisms I took from several German newspapers and magazines are analyzed.
