Sprache und Stil im Werk von Alma M. Karlin
2023, znanstvena monografija

Opis: Alma Maksimiliana Karlin (1889–1950) was born in Celje 130 years ago. Since the mid 1920s, she was considered an important world traveler and by the end of World War II Alma Karlin became a very popular and notable German writing author. The volume provides research findings on the linguistic and stylistic aspects as well as some others specific features of Karlin’s literary heritage. The papers are classified according to theoretical, methodological and empirical background and devided into three sections. The contributions in the first part discuss the possibilities of different ap-proaches to studing literary and aesthetic characteristics in Karlin’s select-ed works. Dejan Kos (Maribor) illustrates how Alma M. Karlin’s texts are characterized by an empathetic tendency to transcend the boundaries of her own world through aesthetics and spirituality. The discussion by Sylvia Brä-sel (Erfurt) shows that Karlin does not merely convey knowledge about the world and reflects on entertaining, foreign, and exotic, but also systematically re-presents herself. Alenka Jensterle-Doležal (Prague) describes the ways in which women’s roles and identities are constructed in the novel Svetlikanje v mraku. The analysis of style and language reveals that the author critically asseses woman’s life in a patriarchal society, while advocating racist judgments and prejudices of the time. The article by Melania Larisa Fabčič (Maribor) focuses on Karlin’s autobiography and her style, which is primarily constructed through reflection of emotions, recognized by the reader even when the text does not explicitly demonstrate them. The texts in the second part focus on different approaches of Alma M. Karlin’s textual style. Vida Jesenšek (Maribor) transparently presents the complexity of the author’s style. By implying linguistic, pragmatic and cognitive aspects, the research identifies the connections and mutual correlations between general principles of text’s structure, specific stylistic »meanings« and substantive textual aspects. Inge Pohl (Schwieberdingen) presents the first comprehensive linguistic analysis of the novel Windlichter des Todes, focusing on the archi-tectonic, structure and composition of literary characters and highlightening the function of the narrative perspective and the narrative structure. One of the most outstanding feautres of Alma M. Karlin’s literary texts is conveing emotions. In her research, Hana Bergerová (Ústí nad Labem) demonstrates that Karlin’s describes emotions in different, explicit and implicit, ways. The papers in the third part examine the creative use of language in Alma M. Karlin’s selected works. The reader notices linguistic creativity when rec-ognizing those linguistic meanings or devices in a text which seem unusual, unexpected, or deviating from expected. Urška Valenčič Arh (Ljubljana) studies the use of phraseological expressions in Der blaue Mond’s and compares the original to the Slovene translation. Alja Lipavic Oštir (Maribor) resarches travel texts with a particular emphasis on geographical names. Simona Štavbar (Ma-ribor) proceeds from the assumption that Karlin’s geobiographical texts contain evaluating statements which reinforce social prejudices. It is not surprising, therefore, that there are numerous euphemisms and dysphisms which Karlin uses to »indirectly« denote things, people, and events, concealing or empha-sizing certain judgments. Karlin’s creativity is also reflected in the effective use of word-formations. Inge Pohl (Schwieberdingen) studies neologisms in the novel Windlichter des Todes and describes the word-forming patterns used by Karlin to attract readers’ attention but which also demonstrate her exceptional knowledge of German. The volume offers a scholarly insight into a number of previously unexplored topics related to language and style of Alma M. Karlin’s literary works and outlines possibilities for further researches.

Beiträge zur deutschen und slowenischen Phraseologie und Parömiologie
Vida Jesenšek, 2021, znanstvena monografija

Opis: The monograph consists of three parts. Twelve contributions presented on several aspects of German and Slovenian phraseology represent a selection of authors phraseological studies, mostly related to the language contrastive (German-Slovene) research topic. Part I deals with typical aspects of proverbs from the perspective of system-related research. This is followed by contributions on the lexicographical and translational problems of phraseology (Part II). The volume ends with reflections on appropriate treatment of phraseology in the learning and teaching contexts (Part III). German as the primary language of observation plays an important role in all the contributions because its status as an influential language in Slovenia is increasingly challenged. It is worth mentioning that in the past, German used to exert much greater historical, cultural, and linguistic influence on the Slovenian society. By combining different research perspectives and linguistic contrastive approaches, the volume intends to appeal to linguists as well as practising translators and language teachers.

Narratives of identity: the interplay of language and oppression in three postcolonial novels : m. a. thesis
Bernarda Helbel, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: This MA thesis examines the relationship between language and identity in postcolonial contexts, as portrayed in the works of Andrea Levy and Jean Rhys. The thesis focuses on the female narrators in The Long Song, Wide Sargasso Sea, and Small Island, exploring the ways in which language shapes their identities and the impact of external voices on their stories. The thesis aims to highlight the tension between recovering individual subjects and fostering cultural and personal identity through language. Another section also examines the concept of double consciousness and the idealization of the prevailing culture, demonstrating the impact of language on one's perceptions of self and belonging. Through analysis of language style, the thesis argues that language can be both a hindrance and a catalyst for self-discovery and the formation of a more authentic identity. The thesis attempts to examine the lasting effects of colonialism and slavery and provides insights into the complexity of language and identity in postcolonial literature contexts.

Genre and Multimodality in Primary School EFL Textbooks : master's thesis
Sara Škerget, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: The master's thesis examines the features of textual and visual material included in primary school EFL textbooks. The genre theory according to the Sydney School is introduced in the theoretical part. The features of authentic and simplified texts are also presented. The principles of discourse and multimodal analysis, which served as a basis for our analysis, are outlined. The analysis includes twenty texts with the accompanying visual material selected from the Messages (EFL) textbooks for lower-secondary students aged 11 to 14 years created by English authors Diana Goodey and Noel Goodey in cooperation with others. The study presented in this thesis focuses on the analysis of selected texts from these textbooks with regard to three dimensions of register: field, i.e., the entities, objects, concepts, and activities represented in the texts and their accompanying images; tone, i.e., the formality or informality of texts and images; and mode, i.e., the dependence of texts and images on the context. The study also examines the prevailing genres and text-image relations in the analysed material.

Non-stupidity condition and pragmatics in artificial intelligence
Bojan Borstner, Niko Šetar, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Symbol Grounding Problem (SGP) (Harnad 1990) is commonly considered one of the central challenges in the philosophy of artificial intelligence as its resolution is deemed necessary for bridging the gap between simple data processing and understanding of meaning and language. SGP has been addressed on numerous occasions with varying results, all resolution attempts having been severely, but for the most part justifiably, restricted by the Zero Semantic Commitment Condition (Taddeo and Floridi 2005). A further condition that demands explanatory power in terms of machine-to-human communication is the Non-Stupidity Condition (Bringsjord 2013) that demands an SG approach to be able to account for plausibility of higher-level language use and understanding, such as pragmatics. In this article, we undertake the endeavour of attempting to explain how merging certain early requirements for SG, such as embodiment, environmental interaction (Ziemke 1998), and compliance with the Z-Condition with symbol emergence (Sun 2000; Tangiuchi et al. 2016, etc.) rather than direct attempts at symbol grounding can help emulate human language acquisition (Vogt 2004; Cowley 2007). Along with the presumption that mind and language are both symbolic (Fodor 1980) and computational (Chomsky 2017), we argue that some rather abstract aspects of language can be logically formalised and finally, that this melange of approaches can yield the explanatory power necessary to satisfy the Non-Stupidity Condition without breaking any previous conditions.

The use of false friends among Slovene students of English : master's thesis
Hajdi Hauptman, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: The theoretical framework in the master’s thesis entitled “The Use of False Friends among Slovene Students of English” covers concepts that are fundamental to false friends and translation studies in general. The theoretical part discusses the authors’ perspectives on definitions and classifications which include various examples of equivalence, cognates and false friends. It then highlights some examples and ideas regarding teaching and learning false friends in the classroom. It is argued that focus on false friends is a useful tool for teachers who incorporate the concept of false friends in their classes. The empirical part of this thesis presents the results of the research which examines the use and knowledge of Slovene-English false friends among Slovene students of English. The research was conducted through a questionnaire which had 26 questions and was distributed online with the help of the tool 1ka. The study included 244 Slovene learners of English. 118 participants were primary school learners from 6th to 9th grade and 126 participants were secondary school learners from years 1 to 4. The results show that Slovene students of English are aware of a significant number of false friends included in the survey, although there are still plenty of Slovene-English false friend pairs that remain unfamiliar. The questionnaire results indicate that more than half of the participants have not heard the expression “false friends” as a linguistic concept at the time of the testing. In general, secondary school learners were more successful in the use of Slovene-English false friends pairings than primary school learners. At the same time, the results do not show that learners with higher grades in English are more familiar with false friends than those with lower grades.

Gender of job titles in advertisements in american newspapers
Maja Petek, 2018, magistrsko delo

Opis: This master’s thesis focuses on gender-specific and gender-neutral expressions or words for job titles in English. When we are choosing the right expression for a job title we often neglect one gender or we put one gender in forefront. In the theoretical part of our master’s thesis we explain the difference between biological sex (sex) and semantic sex (gender). We also write about gender categories, sexism and feminism. We discuss the important topic of politically correct language and we focus on gender marked words. In the practical part we analyse job advertisements in old and new newspapers. We want to determine the use and the frequency of the use of gender marked job titles. Then we use these job titles and we analyse them by using two corpuses: COHA (Corpus of Historical American English) and COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English). We try to determine if the job titles in the past were gender marked, if the words that we use nowadays are gender marked and what is the frequency of the use of gender marked job titles nowadays with the comparison with its use in the past.

Spolni stereotipi v učbenikih angleščine: primerjava dveh izdaj serije učbenikov messages : master's thesis
Veronika Mešić, 2022, magistrsko delo

Opis: The Master’s Thesis focuses on gender stereotypes in English language coursebooks with special emphasis on the comparison between two editions of the coursebook series Messages. The analysis of coursebook series consists of descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative analysis of gender stereotypes in the linguistic (text) and visual (photographs, illustrations) forms. The Master’s Thesis classifies gender stereotypes as those instances in which women and men are portrayed stereotypically e. g. in their profession, through physical appearance, assumed binary traits etc. The found stereotypes are represented descriptively and statistically. Both editions of the coursebook series Messages are compared in terms of gender stereotypes in them. The findings of the study show an increase in gender stereotypes in the visual imagery between the two editions, unequal male to female characters ratio, and underrepresentation of women in occupational roles and activities.
