The impact of serious games in economic and business education: a case of ERP business simulation
Tina Beranič, Marjan Heričko, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Digitalisation nowadays impacts business environments significantly. Therefore, if higher education wants to educate students properly for a successful career path, the business and economics curriculum must be enriched with innovative teaching approaches covering actual topics, such as, for example, the implementation of the ERPsim business simulation, a representative of serious games. The ERPsim business simulation is based on SAP ERP, and is aimed at teaching ERP concepts. It covers different business processes, and allows students to learn using a hands-on approach, simulating real-life scenarios. The presented research focuses on using an ERPsim business simulation as the introduction to the course. The simulation was implemented to ease the introduction of ERP and IT concepts to the business and economic oriented students. Considering the positive effects of serious games and gamification, our research was formed and focused on knowledge acquisition and future student engagement. We researched whether participation in the introductory simulation results in significant knowledge gain and impacts students’ future course engagement. The data were gathered using a self-assessment questionnaire before and after an introductory simulation. The results were highly positive, confirming many positive aspects of business simulation, among others, significant knowledge increase in the domains of business process and ERP transactions, and in the domain of technical knowledge for SAP ERP. The results confirmed that the introductory simulation is appropriate for introducing ERP concepts to newcomers, and, nevertheless, confirmed the positive impact on their intent on future course engagement.

Quo vadis business simulation games in the 21st century?
Mirjana Pejić Bach, Tamara Ćurlin, Ana-Marija Stjepić, Maja Meško, 2023, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Business simulation games have become popular in higher education and business environments. The paper aims to identify the primary research trends and topics of business simulation games research using a systematic and automated literature review with the motivation of research (learning driven and domain driven). Based on these findings, the future development of business simulation games research projected papers that research business simulation games were extracted from Scopus. Second, the research timeline, main publication venues and citation trends have been analysed. Third, the most frequent words, phrases, and topics were extracted using text mining. Results indicate that the research on business simulation games has stagnated, with the most cited papers published in the 2000s. There is a balance between learning-driven and domain driven-research, while technology-driven research is scarce, indicating that the technology used for business simulation games is mature. We project that the research on business simulation games needs to be directed in the area of new technologies that could improve communication with and among the users (virtual reality, augmented reality, simulation games) and technologies that could improve the reasoning and decision-making complexity in business simulation games (artificial intelligence).

42th International Conference on Organizational Science Development : Interdisciplinarity Counts
2023, zbornik

Opis: The 42nd International Scientific Conference on the Development of Organisational Science was held in Portorož from the 22nd to the 24th of March 2023. The main aim of the conference was to promote the importance of knowledge from an interdisciplinary perspective through academic and scientific debates and professional developments from the economic and non-economic worlds. The conference, which was held under the umbrella title "Interdisciplinarity Counts", aimed to emphasize the importance of the knowledge and competencies of the national and international environment, which enable better and more comprehensive development of individuals, organizations, and society. Changes in all environments dictate a broader perception of the interconnectivity of knowledge and competencies from different scientific and applied fields as a pillar of the development dimension. It is undoubtedly more important than ever to take decisions that generate synergies between innovation, different sciences, and applied approaches, and to promote changes in business models that will lead to a sustainable and socially responsible development environment. In Portorož, we have reconnected opinions, views, and scientific and professional debates that will stimulate all of us to act in the future, both in organizations and in society at large.

European first-year university students accept evolution but lack substantial knowledge about it: a standardized European cross-country assessment
Paul Kuschmierz, Anna Beniermann, Alexander Bergmann, Rianne Pinxten, Tuomas Aivelo, Justyna Berniak-Woźny, Gustav Bohlin, Anxela Bugallo-Rodriguez, Pedro Cardia, Bento Filipe Barreiras Pinto Cavadas, Andrej Šorgo, Gregor Torkar, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Investigations of evolution knowledge and acceptance and their relation are central to evolution edu‑ cation research. Ambiguous results in this feld of study demonstrate a variety of measuring issues, for instance difer‑ ently theorized constructs, or a lack of standardized methods, especially for cross-country comparisons. In particular, meaningful comparisons across European countries, with their varying cultural backgrounds and education systems, are rare, often include only few countries, and lack standardization. To address these defcits, we conducted a stand‑ ardized European survey, on 9200 frst-year university students in 26 European countries utilizing a validated, com‑ prehensive questionnaire, the “Evolution Education Questionnaire”, to assess evolution acceptance and knowledge, as well as infuencing factors on evolution acceptance.

Evolutionary content knowledge, religiosity and educational background of Slovene preschool and primary school pre-service teachers
Gregor Torkar, Andrej Šorgo, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Evolution by natural selection is the fundamental backbone of the life sciences. Therefore, it is important for teacher education programs to ensure graduates possess a strong knowledge of evolution in order to teach at all levels of biology education. The main aim was to investigate the impacts of the Slovene pre-service preschool and primary school teachers' religiosity and educational background on their evolutionary content knowledge. In the present study, understanding of five evolutionary topics, religiosity and educational background of 269 students was studied. Results show that students have a very poor understanding of evolution. They very often use teleological reasoning. Although many pieces of research have shown that religiosity can be in conflict with evolutionary theory, our findings show that religiosity does not significantly correlate with evolutionary knowledge nor to the educational background of students. However, for students' understanding of evolution, it is important how many years of biology lessons they had in secondary school. This should be better taken into account by educational policymakers because evolutionary principles are becoming increasingly relevant in medicine, agriculture and other socio-scientific topics.

New Horizons in Subject-Specific Education : Research Aspects of Subject-Specific Didactics
2020

Opis: Over the past three decades, various research methods have been developed in the field of subject-specific educational research. The individual subject didactics have been consolidated enormously, each in its way and at a different pace. The scientific monograph New Horizons in Subject-Specific Education is a study work containing complete and in-depth research of subject-specific didactics, written by several authors from Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The monograph presents new ideas and developments in subject didactics, which are of significant importance to those working in the field. It reflects both the diversity of research concerns in this field and the range of methods used to investigate them. The book consists of four thematic parts—STEM Education, Sport and Art Education, Social Science and Humanities Education, and Pedagogy. We hope that the monograph New Horizons in Subject-Specific Education will contribute some new information and knowledge to an evolving but extremely important area of research.

How do Croatian police officers perceive certain characteristics of police management?
Ksenija Butorac, Ante Orlović, Mislav Stjepan Žebec, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: To explore the importance and existence of Croatian police managers’ relevant characteristics from the perspective of police officers, and in relation to several police officers’ demographic and professional characteristics. Design/Methods/Approach: A convenience sample of 132 Croatian police officers (104 males) who attended a study programme in criminal investigation (average age 31.5 years) was examined by means of a questionnaire that – within Katz’s skill theory of successful management – assesses the perceived importance and the perceived existence of technical/expert, social and strategic knowledge/skills, as well as the most representative characteristics of current police managers. Findings: A dominant perception of the highest level of importance for all three categories of managerial knowledge/skills was detected, while possession of the said skills was mainly assessed to be at the medium level. The largest difference was found between the perceived importance and the perceived possession of social skills. Social skills were also perceived to be significantly more important than the other ones, while police managers were perceived to most frequently possess expert skills. Out of 12 offered police manager characteristics, the most frequently selected were negative ones. Finally, there were no significant and systematic effects of demographic and professional factors on the perceived importance and perceived possession of any of the three knowledge/skills categories. Research Limitations / Implications: A larger and more representative sample would ensure the study’s greater external validity and statistical power. Additional management skill items are needed in the questionnaire to improve the construct validity (besides including other relevant factors and questions useful for interpreting the trends detected). Practical Implications: Within the research limitations, the findings suggest possible changes to the education system, staff assessment and police officers’ promotion. Originality/Value: This is the first police management research in Croatia and probably the first generally within the framework of Katz’s skill theory of successful management.

Knowledge base of the region - role of the universities in regional innovation : the case of south Transdanubia
Zoltán Gál, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The economic attraction and competitiveness of the regions depends on the spatially balanced network-based co-operation of different research bases and firms involved in innovation development. The utilisation of the regional knowledge base, innovation potential and co- operation between businesses and universities & research institutions continues to play an increasing role in regard to business success and the competitive economic performance of the regions. Innovation is considered as an interactive and system-like process depending on traditions with definite spatial forms and it is manifested in the form of “networks” among the companies and universities, and among the different transfer organisations, which can stimulate university-industry linkages. The paper presents the findings of the “ERAWATCH regional benchmarking surveys – in which the South Transdanubian region participated in – on innovation potential and investment into research” surveys concentrating on the role of innovation networks, within them highlighting the special role of regional universities in the collaborative research networks. The introduction is followed by a demonstration highlighting the role of universities in national and regional knowledge transfer emphasizing the fact that the spatial (regional) structure of innovation is very much determined by the transformation of potential universities and their widening innovative functions during the economic transition in Hungary. The next section provides an overview of findings of the ERAWATCH survey (2006) on the role of universities in regional network building and discusses those factors that are necessary for the establishment of a research university model. The last section assesses the efficiency and coherence of the Regional Innovation System with regard to the needs and capacities of the regional economies and the extent of matching or mismatching between the knowledge and economic specialization.
