Energy efficient system for detection of elephants with Machine Learning

Opis: Human-Elephant Conflicts are a major problem in terms of elephant conservation. According to WILDLABS, an average of 400 people and 100 elephants are killed every year in India alone because of them. Early warning systems replace the role of human watchers and warn local communities of nearby, potentially life threatening, elephants, thus minimising the Human-Elephant Conflicts. In this Master's thesis we present the structure of an early warning system, which consists of several low-power embedded systems equipped with thermal cameras and a single gateway. To detect elephants from captured thermal images we used Machine Learning methods, specifically Convolutional Neural Networks. The main focus of this thesis was the design, implementation and evaluation of Machine Learning models running on microcontrollers under low-power conditions. We designed and trained several accurate image classification models, optimised them for on-device deployment and compared them against models trained with commercial software in terms of accuracy, inference speed and size. While writing firmware, we ported a part of the TensorFlow library and created our own build system, suitable for the libopencm3 platform. We also implemented reporting of inference results over the LoRaWAN network and described a possible server-size solution. We finally a constructed fully functional embedded system from various development and evaluation boards, and evaluated its performance in terms of power consumption. We show that embedded systems with Machine Learning capabilities are a viable solution to many real life problems.

Selected legal problems of EEG biofeedback therapy under the Polish law

Opis: The use of EEG biofeedback for therapeutic or healing purposes has its justification in modern research and recently one can notice the increasing popularity of this method. Possible threats which may be associated with improper training and EEG biofeedback therapy may result from error in the diagnosis or incorrect selection of the training protocol. The effectiveness of therapy depends largely on the efforts of the patient himself, however, the range of waves will be amplified or suppressed by diagnosticians and therapists. If during an EEG biofeedback, the correct neuronal signal is amplified or suppressed, this can have adverse effects. In Poland, there are no legal regulations regarding the acquisition of qualifications for conducting neurotherapy. Likewise, there are no indications as to which institutions have the right to assign appropriate powers to use this type of apparatus. The lack of legal regulations means that now everyone can practice neurotherapy. The article presents selected legal problems related to conducting EEG biofeedback therapy under law, especially under Polish regulations, including the problem of the responsibility of the therapist or trainer.

Život i stvaralaštvo Drage Gervaisa u hrvatsko-slovenskom kontekstu

Opis: Življenje in ustvarjalnost Draga Gervaisa v hrvaško-slovenskem kontekstu: Čudež device Ivane - Zgodba o Vodiški Johanci Drago Gervais (1904-1957), pesnik, pisatelj, dramatik, esejist in zgo­dovinar, v svojih delih izpostavlja številne zapletene odnose, značil­ne za hrvaški, slovanski in srednjeevropski kontekst, iz katerega je izhajal in v katerem je živel ter ustvarjal. Namen prispevka je z re­konstrukcijo tega konteksta kot okvirja pesniške usode osvetliti pred­vsem hrvaško-slovenske in slovensko-hrvaške odnose. Analizirana je Gervaisova manj znana tragikomedija Čudo djevice Ivane (Čudež device Ivane), ki s svojimi besedilnimi in nebesedilnimi elementi priča o bogatih hrvaško-slovenskih odnosih v avtorjevem življenju in ustvarjanju.

Mobile learning usage and preferences of vocational secondary school students

Opis: The purpose of this paper is to determine the current status of mobile device usage and mobile learning adoption in vocational education and training (VET) secondary schools in three European Union countries (Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany). The research focused on exploring students’ mobile device usage habits, their attitudes toward education in the context of mobile application support, and preferences regarding mobile learning features. The research confirmed a high level of mobile device usage among secondary school students on a daily basis; smartphones and laptops were the most commonly used devices. The vast majority of participants perceived themselves to be advanced mobile device users, but reported a deficit of ICT-assisted mobile learning experience. However, the majority of respondents with prior ICT-assisted education experience described it as a positive or very positive experience. In addition, study participants tended to agree that mobile learning will play a significant role in education in the future. The paper also explored the reported differences among the students in the three countries and suggested several implications for understanding students’ views of mobile learning. The findings provide insights into possibilities of m-learning implementation while creating a framework for m-learning application development in the VET secondary school environment.

Indoor mapping and navigation using geographic information systems

Opis: This study present proposal work with prototypes that use Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) and NFC technology for indoor navigation using mobile device with help by using geographic information system to create geotagged maps to building in this diploma thesis. The study used an experimental approach with open source software and hardware engineering tools and technologies which minimized cost. A preliminary experiment with RFID and NFC tools helped to understand the compatibility of certain RFID infrastructure with NFC and helped to determine if and how NFC could be used. The capability of NFC in leveraging its low-cost infrastructure of passive tags, its embedment in mobile devices and the ubiquity of the mobile device provided a cost effective solution with good accuracy.

The influence of electrogalvanic device on scaling

Opis: The use of an electrogalvanic device for scale neutralisation is descibed in this paper. Physico-chemical analyses were performed before and after the treatment. The results were compared with those obtained by using magnetic water treatment device. By measuring some individual parameters and the implementation of chemical analysis, the satisfactory functioning of the electrogalvanic device was demonstrated. The quality of drinking water did notchange much after the water treatment method. The results of determination of calcium carbonate saturating index showed that the raw drinking water is incarbonate equlibrium as well as both treated water samples. The calcite/aragonite ratio was studied by means of microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. Inspection of crystals formed during the experiments with microscopy indicated that aragonite crystal structure of the precipitates prevailed over the calcite stucture. The diffractograms showed that the share of aragonite increased after using the electrogalvanic device compared with raw drinking water samples where the share of calcite was higher.

The development of an electrochemical chip for the in-situ production of active chlorine

Opis: Active chlorine is a highly efficient disinfectant used for sanitizing purposes in swimming pools, food-processing facilities and hospitals. It is also known for being the most powerful reagent in applications related to water disinfection. Currently, the most widely-used method for chlorine production is the chlor-alkali process. Despite significant improvements in electrode materials, used in combination with the process optimization that has taken place in recent decades, the production still consumes very high amounts of energy. Alternatives, such as electrochemical methods, require platinum-group metals (PGMs) that are expensive. In this study, a continuous-flow device was fabricated, involving an electrochemical chip for treating a fluid which uses an integrated silver(I) chloride photoelectrode. The device comprised of an inlet and outlet for the treated fluid, together with a flow path between them where the photoelectrode was located. This low-cost and recyclable chip included a treatment mode of operation, for treating a fluid that moves along the flow path, and a regeneration mode of operation, for regenerating the substrate. The photoelectrode was electrochemically activated, and was recycled at low potentials between 0.2 V and 0.4 V vs Ag/AgCl (3 M KCl) in an electrolyte solution containing chloride ions. The conducted experiments showed that the layer of silver(I) chloride (AgCl) on the photoelectrode decomposed upon exposure to light into silver (Ag) and chlorine (Cl2); thus, active chlorine (HOCl) was formed when the photoelectrode was in contact with water. However, degradation effects were observed over time, meaning that the photoelectrode was not able to be fully regenerated. Nevertheless, a cost-effective alternative for chlorine generation based on a light-driven microfluidic device is proposed here for the first time.

Language of the North American Pop Culture in the Slovene Subtitle Translation: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Opis: Subtitling is a specific translation activity that demands a particular set of skills and knowledge. Translating for film and television requires the translator to focus on unique features and constraints of subtitles in addition to an already lengthy list of obstacles that have to be overcome when translating for a different culture. This paper discusses various characteristics, standards, and methods of subtitling. The movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is used as an example to showcase the challenges a translator faces, not just technical, but linguistic and cultural as well. I analyze rhetorical devices, culture-specific elements, register, and also give special attention to the colloquial uses of the word like, specifically its function as a quotative and as a pragmatic marker. In these categories I comment on the translation decisions made in the official subtitles for the theatrical release, and in some instances compare them to the solutions employed in the amateur subtitle translation found online. Where no suitable translation is used in either, I provide suggestions that better follow the guidelines of translation and subtitling theories.
