The role of rhetoric in teacher virtual exchanges
Maja Kerneža, Metka Kordigel Aberšek, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Educators’ rhetorical skills are pivotal in virtual collaboration between teachers and parents, enhancing communication clarity and overcoming cultural barriers, thereby enriching educational experience and fostering intercultural understanding. A review of scientific databases such as Academic Search Complete, ERIC, SCOPUS, and Web of Science, was conducted to identify peer-reviewed articles from 2018 onwards that explore the role of rhetoric in teacher virtual exchanges. Articles were analysed for themes, findings, biases, and research gaps. A notable finding is the lack of research on rhetoric in virtual teacher exchanges, despite its potential to overcome cultural barriers and enhance collaboration. The study reveals that effective rhetorical techniques can improve clarity, persuasiveness, and intercultural understanding in virtual exchanges, indicating a need for more research and educational programs in this area. Furthermore, the study extends to virtual communication between teachers and parents, especially with non-native speakers or those with limited proficiency in the official language. This highlights the need for teachers to use sophisticated rhetorical strategies in diverse linguistic situations to improve understanding and involvement. In summary, the research underscores the significant impact of rhetorical skills in virtual teacher exchanges, with broader implications for global collaboration and intercultural understanding in the educational sphere.

Business English as a lingua franca : a cross-cultural perspective of teaching English for business purposes
Nataša Gajšt, 2014, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: In our era of globalisation, English is at the top of the languages used in international business. A vast majority of business communication in English is carried out by non-native speakers of English. In a cross-cultural exchange of information, the sender and the recipient come from different cultural backgrounds. The patterns of communication vary across the globe and non-native speakers tend to apply their native language patterns when communicating in English. This paper thus focuses on the concept of spoken communication and dimensions of culture and how they are reflected in communication patterns in different business situations. It also addresses the teaching of Business English as a lingua franca and the role of Business English teachers in helping learners develop their communicative and intercultural competence in order to communicate effectively in a multicultural work environment.

Understanding the importance of internal integration and its implications for intercultural business communication
Darja Topolšek, Sara Orthaber, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The extent to which relationships in organizations are co-operative depends on the level of internal integration between functional and departmental groups. These relationships become even more critical in international businesses as well as in geographically dislocated subsidiaries. Cultural characteristics and different factors which managr, facilitatr and/or hinder internal integration present the basis for studying internal integration of different functions. Therefore, the following paper discusses various theoriesof internal integration and its role in organizations. More specifically, it focuses on logistics and marketing functions and explores studies that have investigated and examined the levels of internal integration of logistics and marketing functions. With the objective to identify potential implications, high/low levels of internal integration may have on intercultural communication which occurs in international business practices, the most prominent cultural frameworks are presented to identify implications different levels of internal integration may have for intercultural communication, in particular between Slovenian companies and their foreign subsidiaries.

Development of intercultural competence in contemporary foreign language classroom by incorporating information and communication technology
Mirjam Danilović, 2011, diplomsko delo

Opis: The idea for the diploma thesis arouse from the fact that technology and the Internet are still not widely used in the English classroom. When thinking about how to integrate technology in the classroom I was inspired by different web sites which offer a vast variety of authentic as well as ELT-specific materials that can be used in the English classroom. I decided to focus on developing intercultural competence with information and communication technology by extending the intercultural topics covered in the coursebooks for students at secondary level. In the theoretical part of my thesis I present the notion of intercultural competence as defined by different authors. A special emphasis is given to developing of intercultural competence in the English classroom, including planning lessons to develop intercultural competence. In the third chapter the information and communication technology (ICT) and the English classroom is covered. Some possibilities of using ICT in the English classroom in terms of Web 2.0 are presented, which is the basis for the empirical part. In the empirical part of my thesis the activities to extend the intercultural topics covered in coursebooks are planned and presented. Since all activities are planned to be done online, they are available also on the Internet.
